At least 17 people were killed and 16 were seriously injured in the Dholapani area of Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district on Saturday after the jeep they were travelling in drove into a parked truck. The jeep was carrying labourers from different villages in the area, most of them young women, who were on their way back home from Chhoti Sadari town, where they worked. An earth-moving machine had to be called pull the jeep out of the wreckage after it got stuck under the truck, the Times of India reported.
Fourteen of them were taken straight to the government hospital’s mortuary in Chhoti Sadri, while the injured were taken to an Udaipur hospital, though a few of them died on the way. The truck driver and mechanic, who were fixing some parts under the vehicle, were also killed. Many of the other victims are also said to be in very critical condition. The local police said it was clear that the jeep was terribly overcrowded.
