Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday thanked anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare for suggesting changes to the Janlokpal Bill, saying that his government would surely implement them. The suggested changes are chiefly concerned with the appointment and removal of the ombudsman, reported PTI. Hazare also said he will step in if the central government obstructs the bill, especially over the contentious clause which brings Union government functionaries under its ambit.
According to AAP's draft bill, the chairperson or any member of the Janlokpal can be removed due to proven misconduct or incapacity only by the Lieutenant Governor on the recommendation of the assembly by a minimum two-third majority of the members. Hazare has suggested that the Lokpal selection panel be of seven members, with two High Court judges and one eminent person. He also said that impeachment proceedings for removal should begin only after the Supreme Court's approval.
Former AAP leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav have accused Kejriwal of diluting the provisions that had been envisaged originally during the Hazare-led anti-corruption movement in 2011.
