World No. 2 Andy Murray beat Belgian David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 to give Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five Davis Cup finals on Sunday. This meant that the country won the cup for the first time since 1936, the BBC reported. Murray collapsed on to the court as his final shot – a lob over Goffin’s head – landed inside. He was soon mobbed by his teammates.“I never thought we would have the opportunity to do this,” Murray said immediately after he had won, getting up to shake hands with Goffin, who was hoping to give Belgium its first-ever title.
This was officially the best individual run in the Davis Cup's 115-year history, the Telegraph reported. Murray remained undefeated in the tournament, with 11 victories. Murray’s brother Jamie had partnered with him to win their doubles rubber on Saturday. “It's by far the biggest achievement of my career. I've had an amazing season and this is an unbelievable way to cap it off,” Jamie said.
