Kerala Muslim leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musalyar on Saturday described the idea of gender equality as un-Islamic, PTI reported. The chief of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama said that women could not be equal to men as “they are fit only to deliver children”, and that they do not have the mental strength and power to control the universe, which men have. “Gender equality is something which is never going to be a reality. It is against Islam, humanity and was intellectually wrong,” he said in Kozhikode. The Muslim leader’s remarks come in the background of discussions for a uniform civil code, which would prohibit Muslim men from having more than one wife. He recently also said that 50% of reservation for women in seats for civic polls was too high, but retracted it after it set off a backlash, DNA reported.
