Punjab Congress chief Pratap Singh Bajwa and state Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar resigned on Thursday. Congress president Sonia Gandhi has accepted the resignations, reported PTI. According to reports, Bajwa and Jakhar were not pleased suggestions that former chief minister Amarinder Singh, who had been projected as the chief ministerial candidate in the previous Assembly polls, may become the new state Congress unit chief.

Punjab goes to polls in 2017 and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has held consultations on streamlining the organisation in the state, said the report. The reconstitution of the Punjab Congress Committee is likely to happen in a couple of days, All India Congress Committee general secretary Shakeel Ahmed said.
