Bharatiya Janata Party MLA OP Sharma was on Thursday suspended from the Delhi Assembly for the entire Winter session for using derogatory language against Aam Aadmi Party legislator Alka Lamba. He was on Tuesday suspended from the Assembly for two days by the Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, but women legislators had demanded his suspension for the entire winter session.
During a debate about homeless people and night shelters in the city, Sharma had allegedly said, “Yeh toh raat bhar ghumne wali hai (She roams around all night)”, referring to Lamba. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his shock at the comments and hoped that the BJP would take action against Sharma.
AAP supporters protested outside Sharma's house on Wednesday, raising slogans against his sexist jibe against Lamba. Sharma is one of the three BJP lawmakers in the Assembly, while the AAP has 67 seats. The BJP leader has not extended an apology so far, saying he was merely defending himself from Lamba's baseless charges.
