Rain continued to pour in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, with the toll in rain-related incidents rising to 176, PTI reported. More showers are predicted in the state over the next 24 to 48 hours, the report added. The meteorological department also predicted thundershowers in parts of Puducherry, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshwadeep in the next two days. Five people died due to rain on Tuesday and two more on Wednesday.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa condoled the death of the seven people and announced Rs 4 lakh compensation to their families. Papanasam in Tirunelveli district received the highest amount of rain on Tuesday, at 10 cm. A central government team will be visiting Tamil Nadu on Thursday to assess the damage caused by the flooding.
