India and China were the two countries most affected by weather-related disasters between 1995 and 2015, a report by the United Nations revealed on Tuesday, a few weeks ahead of the landmark climate change summit in Paris next month. More than three billion people from the two countries have been displaced because of such calamities, nearly 75% of the global figure of 4.1 billion, the Press Trust of India reported. The number reflects the massive populations of the two countries, which are followed on the report’s list by the United States, Philippines and Indonesia.
Out of the three billion, India accounts for about 800 million displaced people while China makes up the rest. India was hit by 288 weather-related disasters over the last twenty years, the third-highest in the world after the US and China. The report also stated that while national preparedness has improved, 90% of major disasters in the world in the last two decades came from weather –related events such as floods, storms, heat waves and droughts.
