Peter Mukherjea gave his son Rahul conflicting information about having spoken to Sheena Bora in the days after her murder, which led the Central Bureau of Investigation to arrest him in the case, DNA reported on Tuesday. Mukherjea, who is under interrogation by the CBI, was moved to Delhi late on Monday night and might be subjected to a lie detector test there, officials said.
According to Rahul’s statement, he had been making enquiries about Sheena’s disappearance with all his family members after her disappearance in 2012, when she was already dead. Rahul claimed that Peter told him he had spoken to Sheena and that she was happily settled in the United States, DNA reported. However, Peter later got Sheena’s signature on a document that Rahul needed to vacate a property they had rented together. Peter and prime accused Indrani Mukherjea had forged this, a CBI officer. Peter’s claim that he had spoken to Bora in the US, but later his ability to get her sign roused the CBI’s suspicions. When they questioned him, he could not answer satisfactorily, following which they formally arrested him.
Sheena, who had been in a relationship with Rahul, Peter's son from an earlier marriage, was murdered on April 24, 2012. Her body was burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai. On Monday, a magistrate in Mumbai had extended the CBI’s custody of Peter Mukherjea till November 26.
