A Delhi court on Friday asked the Election Commission and Delhi University to provide Union Human Resource Development minister Smriti Irani’s academic documents, in response to a complaint that she had provided false information during the elections. The complainant, Ahmer Khan, had argued that Irani had deliberately fudged her educational qualifications in affidavits provided to the election commission before the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections and not clarified the matter when concerns were raised on the issue, the Times of India reported.
Khan contended that Irani could be punished under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and under section 125A of Representation of the People Act if her details were wrong. This could bring her a jail term of up to six months as well as a fine. The court, however, declined his request for details of her Class 10 and 12 performance, saying this was not under challenge.
