The Censor Board of Film Certification has come down heavily on Pan Nalin’s film Angry Indian Goddesses, claiming it has objectionable references to Hindu holy figures. DNA reported that large parts of the film have been cut out by the examining committee, in particular those by actor Tannishtha Chatterjee, whose role is said to have been reduced considerably. The film, which has already gathered critical acclaim abroad, was scheduled to be released in the first week of December. However, it has now been sent to the censor board’s revising committee and the actual date of release is unknown.
The censor board has come in for criticism for gagging several movies in India recently. On Wednesday, the panel asked makers of the latest James Bond film to cut out “long kissing scenes” before it could be screened in Indian theatres. The move was the subject of some outrage and much online hilarity, given that his romantic liaisons are an iconic part of Bond’s character.
