Fourteen Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy personnel on Thursday for straying too far from the designated Indian waters. The alleged violation of the International Maritime Boundary Line led to three fishing boats being seized. The fishermen were taken to the naval base of Kangesanthurai in the Northern Province of the island nation, and later shifted to Jaffna, according to the joint director of fisheries Subburaj. “They were arrested while fishing near the Sri Lankan coast”, he said, adding it was not clear why they were shifted to Jaffna. One of the boats was from Rameswaram, while it is not yet clear which districts the other fishermen belong to.
