Fighting terrorism and increasing economic engagement will take centre stage during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to Kuala Lumpur, beginning Saturday. He will be addressing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – India and East Asia summits during his visit, reported PTI.
Modi will also hold talks with Malaysia on ways to boost bilateral cooperation in areas including defence and security. The ASEAN bloc, comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, is considered one of the world's fastest growing regions. It is India's fourth-largest trading partner, while the country is the bloc's sixth-largest trading partner.
The world leaders at the East Asia Summit are expected to discuss matters of international concern, including terrorism, irregular migration, the South China Sea, the situation in Korean Peninsula and the Middle East. Ministry of external affairs secretary (east) Anil Wadhwa said that ASEAN and India are looking closely in addressing terrorism, drug trafficking, cybercrime and piracy along the Malacca Straight. The two sides are likely to sign a number of MoUs.
