Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal, who was taken to a Gurgaon hospital two days ago, died on Tuesday. The 89-year-old had been admitted following heart and kidney problems and complaints of breathlessness, and was immediately declared in critical condition. The organisation’s president Praveen Togadia confirmed that he died at 2.24 pm, NDTV reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences about Singhal's death. Several major leaders, including Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had visited him in hospital on Sunday and Monday. Singhal was the VHP's international working president for 20 years before being replaced by Togadia in 2011. He was also considered to be at the forefront of the Ramjanmabhoomi movement in Ayodhya.
