Chittoor Mayor Katari Anuradha was killed and her husband Katari Mohan, a senior Telugu Desam Party leader, seriously injured inside the Chittoor Municipal Corporation office on Tuesday. The gang members shot at and attacked the couple with knives, escaping immediately after the attack. Katari Anuradha died on the spot while her husband has been admitted to hospital and is in serious condition. The Hindu reported that all the assailants, who were wearing burkhas, are believed to be from Karnataka.
Katari Mohan is the prime accused in the murder of former Chittoor MLA CK Jayachandra Reddy a decade ago. Katari Anuradha became the Mayor after TDP won a majority of 36 wards out of 50 in the corporation elections.
