At least 21 more persons were killed in Assam on Tuesday as the flooding in several districts worsened.

Thirteen of the deaths were reported in Sivasagar, five in Charaideo, two in Golaghat and one in Jorhat, taking the toll in the floods in the state to 31 in recent days.

More than 5.6 lakh persons were affected by the floods in 16 districts, the newspaper quoted the Assam State Disaster Management Authority as having said on Tuesday night. Sivasagar was the worst-affected district with nearly 3.6 lakh persons affected.

As of Tuesday night, more than 12,200 persons had been moved into 71 relief camps.

Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Disang and Dikhou, were flowing above the danger level.

The military, the National Disaster Response Force and security personnel were involved in the rescue efforts, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
