The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi party on Tuesday said it will contest the Assembly elections in Puducherry alone.
The Thol Thirumavalavan-led party said that it will field candidates in three constituencies – Ossudu, Nettappakkam and Uzhavarkarai – and support nominees of the Congress-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance in the remaining 27 seats.
The party has already filed its nominations in the three constituencies.
In a statement, Thirumavalavan said that the party decided to contest alone as it did not have clarity about which constituencies it was being allocated by its allies.
The last day for withdrawal of candidates is Thursday. Puducherry will hold the polls on April 9. The votes will be counted on May 4.
The party is also part of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, where the seat-sharing negotiations are underway.
In the 2021 polls, the Congress had allotted the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi only one seat to contest, Thirumavalavan said on Tuesday.
“To avoid putting pressure on the alliance, we accepted that one seat at that time and contested,” he added. “However, we did not receive cooperation from the alliance parties. Nevertheless, we secured more than 6,000 votes.”
At the time, the National Democratic Alliance comprising the All India NR Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party had defeated the Congress-DMK alliance.
