The Lok Sabha on Tuesday revoked the suspension of eight Opposition MPs through a voice vote.

The MPs had been suspended on February 3 for the remainder of the Budget Session after they allegedly tore up papers and threw them at the speaker’s chair. In Speaker Om Birla’s absence, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, a member of the panel of chairpersons, was presiding over the proceedings in the Lower House at the time.

The MPs are Congress’ Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Padole and Dean Kuriakose, and S Venkatesan from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

On Tuesday, K Suresh, the Congress chief whip in Lok Sabha, initiated the discussion on the resolution to revoke the suspension.

Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav supported the resolution, stating that “the ruling party people should also resolve” to maintain the decorum of the House.

“All members are responsible for maintaining the dignity of the House,” said Dharmendra Yadav. “But on behalf of the party and my leader, Akhilesh Yadav, we will never cross the dignity of the House.”

He added that without the ruling party’s support, Parliament would not run.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the ruling side is always ready for discussions. “We have followed rules in the past and will do so in the future,” added Rijiju.

The eight MPs were suspended against the backdrop of multiple adjournments in the House amid protests by the Opposition after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was prevented from quoting an excerpt of an unpublished memoir of former Indian Army chief MM Naravane.

During the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, Gandhi had been mentioning the excerpt about the political decision-making amid the 2020 border tensions between India and China.
