The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, led by former Tamil Nadu MLA TTV Dhinakaran, on Wednesday returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance months ahead of the Assembly election.
Union minister Piyush Goyal, who is the in charge of the BJP’s election campaign in Tamil Nadu, said that he was honoured and delighted that Dhinakaran had “decided to come back to the NDA family”, ANI reported.
“We…all are committed to removing this corrupt DMK [Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam] government, this incompetent DMK government, which is attacking the people of Tamil Nadu, attacking Tamil culture, attacking the Tamil pride, about which we are all very hurt,” Goyal said.
The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as part of the NDA but quit the alliance in September.
Dhinakaran had at the time expressed disappointment about his party being neglected after the BJP revived its ties with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
On Wednesday, Dhinakaran said that the party’s return to the NDA marked a new beginning, NDTV reported.
“We will strive to form a new government in Tamil Nadu,” he was quoted by the channel as saying. “I would like to say just one thing: those who sacrifice have never gone down. As true followers of Amma [former AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa], we will all unite together and form the government.”
Tamil Nadu is expected to head for Assembly polls in April or May. In 2021, an alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had won the election, ending the decade-long tenure of the AIADMK.
