Two persons were injured in explosions in the Bishnupur district of Manipur on Monday, PTI quoted the police as saying.

The first blast occurred at around 5.40 am at an abandoned house in the Phougakchao police station area. It is suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device, PTI reported.

The owner of the house and his family have been living in a relief camp.

There had been another explosion between 5.40 am and 5.55 am, India Today North East quoted reports as saying.

The house had been abandoned since the ethnic clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in May 2023. At least 260 persons have been killed and more than 59,000 persons displaced. There were periodic upticks in violence in 2024 and 2025.

The state has been under the President’s Rule since February 2025 after N Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister.

While the Kukis are in the majority in the state’s hill districts, the Meiteis dominate the valley region where Bishnupur is located.

The final blast took place about 200 metres away at around 8.45 am when residents had gathered following the first explosion, PTI quoted the police as saying.

Two persons, Sanatomba Singh and Indubala Devi, were injured and taken to a hospital. They are said to be out of danger.

The residents scuffled with the security forces who visited the area after the blast, PTI reported.
