Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav announced on Thursday that if his party wins the Bihar Assembly election, it will provide a government job to one member of each family within 20 days.
Yadav said that the National Democratic Alliance government had failed to provide jobs and employment for 20 years and that the RJD-led coalition will enact a special employment Act within 20 days of coming to power.
Under the Act, all families in the state will have at least one member with a government job within 20 months, Yadav said.
“I had promised government jobs in the last Assembly polls as well [in 2020],” The Indian Express quoted Yadav as saying. “During the brief period I was in power, five lakh jobs were provided. You can imagine what could be possible had I got a five-year term.”
Yadav’s claim was a reference to his term as deputy chief minister of Bihar between August 2022 and January 2024.
For 17 months, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had formed a government with the RJD and its ally Congress. Kumar quit the alliance to join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party in January 2024.
The Assembly polls will take place in two phases on November 6 and November 11. The counting of votes will happen on November 14.
Yadav’s RJD is expected to contest the polls in an alliance with the Congress and other parties of the Opposition INDIA bloc. The alliance is challenging a coalition comprising Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), the BJP and smaller members of the NDA.
