The Karnataka government on Friday issued a notification capping movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across the state, excluding taxes, The Indian Express reported.

The price ceiling will apply to all screenings, across languages and theatres, including multiplexes.

Multi-screen cinemas offering premium facilities with 75 seats or fewer will be exempted from this cap, The News Minute reported.

The move is part of the newly amended 2025 Karnataka Cinemas Regulation Rules and follows a draft issued on July 15, which invited public feedback over the proposed amendments over a 15-day period.

After reviewing responses, the government confirmed the decision to impose the price ceiling.

The new regulation is set to take effect upon its final publication in the Official Gazette, the notification said.

A similar Rs 200 limit was announced during Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s previous tenure in 2017.

The policy was eventually stayed by the Karnataka High Court after multiplex owners challenged the decision, citing concerns over potential revenue losses, The Indian Express reported.
