Four persons died and three went missing in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in the Upper Rimbi area in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district on Friday, India Today reported.
The landslide took place in Yangthang village in the early hours of Friday.
Gyalshing Superintendent of Police Tshering Sherpa said that three persons were killed on the spot, ANI reported.
Sherpa said that security personnel, along with local residents, managed to evacuate two injured women from the affected area after constructing a temporary bridge out of a tree log over the flooded Hume river.
The two women were taken to the district hospital, ANI reported. However, one of them succumbed to her injuries during treatment. “The other remains in critical condition,” Sherpa said, adding that three persons were still missing.
Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed grief over the loss of lives in the landslide, the Hindustan Times reported. “Ensuring the safety, welfare and necessary assistance to the victim families is the top priority of the state government,” the chief minister said.
