The main accused in the dowry death of a 28-year-old woman in Greater Noida was injured in a gunfight with the police while trying to escape custody on Sunday, The Hindu quoted officers as saying.

Vipin Bhati, who along with his family members allegedly set his wife Nikki Bhati on fire, was arrested on Saturday and taken to his home in Sirsa village in Greater Noida to recover evidence.

“He snatched an officer’s pistol and opened fire,” The Hindu quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar as saying. “In retaliatory firing, he suffered a bullet injury in his leg.”

Vipin Bhati was taken to hospital where he told reporters: “I have not done anything. She died on her own. Fights between a husband and wife happen everywhere.”

Nikki Bhati suffered 70% burn injuries on August 21 and died at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where she had been shifted from Fortis Hospital in Noida. The police said they were alerted by the Fortis Hospital and a complaint was filed by Nikki Bhati’s sister Kanchan.

In her complaint, Kanchan alleged that Nikki Bhati was regularly harassed for dowry by Vipin Bhati, his brother Rohit, mother Daya and father Satveer.

The complainant alleged that on Thursday, Vipin Bhati struck Nikki Bhati on the neck, causing her to faint, before pouring an inflammable liquid on her and setting her on fire, The Hindu reported.

Kanchan, who is married to Rohit, was also reportedly assaulted that day.

The two sisters had married into the same family in 2016. Their parents had reportedly given a car, a motorcycle, cash and gold to Vipin and Rohit’s family at the time of the marriage and continued to send gifts on festivals.

After receiving Kanchan’s complaint, Vipin Bhati, Rohit, Daya and Satveer were booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to murder, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal conspiracy.

While Vipin Bhati and Daya have been arrested, Rohit and Satveer are absconding, The Hindu reported.
