Thirty-six persons returning from church prayers were attacked on Sunday in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district by a group of people who objected to allegedly unlawful religious conversions, The Statesman reported.
Some of those who were attacked have been admitted to the Kanker District Hospital, Amar Ujala reported.
On August 10, eight Christian families were returning to their homes after prayers when they were attacked by other residents of the village, Amar Ujala reported.
One of them, Hitesh Kumar, alleged that his mother, Shanti Bai Darro was brutally assaulted by the group.
“We were targeted because of our faith,” he told The Statesman. “The entire village turned on us.”
Simon Digbal Tandi, the state secretary of the Rashtriya Christian Morcha, has claimed that another woman besides Darro was also in a critical condition while another person, identified as Jageshwar Usendi, suffered a ruptured eardrum.
Tandi futher alleged that the local police station did not register a first information report in the matter, prompting the complainants to approach the superintendent of police on Monday.
Kanker Superintendent of Police IK Elesela has said a “detailed investigation” is being conducted in the matter after two groups lodged complaints about the incident.
“An FIR will be filed once the preliminary inquiry is complete,” he was quoted as saying by The Statesman.
The incident follows on the heels of the arrest of two Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh’s Durg in July on allegations of human trafficking and religious conversion. The nuns were granted bail on August 2.
