A curfew has been imposed in Roing town of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district after a mob lynched a migrant worker from Assam on Friday, accusing him of sexually assaulting several minor girls, reported PTI.

The man, identified as 19-year-old Riaz-Ul Kurim from Bongaigaon, used to work at a construction site near a school. The mob had accused him of sexually assaulting several students staying at the school’s hostel, the news agency quoted Lower Dibang Valley Superintendent of Police Ringu Ngupok as saying.

There were no grills on the windows of the hostel rooms and the sliding doors lacked locks, an unidentified police officer was quoted as saying by PTI.

On Thursday, the school authorities held a meeting with parents of the students regarding the alleged sexual assaults. Following this, the parents started assaulting all the labourers working at the construction site.

Kurim fled the site but was tracked to a nearby locality by the parents and other residents of the area. They thrashed him before the police intervened and took him into custody, said Ngupok.

However, the mob followed the police, forcibly removed him from custody and assaulted him. According to the superintendent of police, Kurim was taken to a hospital, but the mob arrived there and thrashed him again.

The police have registered several cases pertaining to child sexual assault and lynching, reported PTI.

“The situation in Roing remains tense but is under control,” said Ngupok. “The school’s hostel has been shut down indefinitely by the district administration and parents have been instructed to withdraw their children and enrol them in nearby government or recognised private schools.”
