Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and Chief Minister Hemant Soren won the state Assembly elections on Saturday from Barhait, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gamliyel Hembrom by 39,791 votes. Hemant Soren secured 95,612 votes in all, data from the Election Commission showed.

In Gandey, Hemant Soren’s wife, Kalpana Soren, was leading the BJP’s Muniya Devi by 17,142 votes in the last round of counting. Kalpana Soren garnered 1,19,372 votes of the total counted.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha candidate Basant Soren, who is Hemant Soren’s brother, won the Dumka Assembly seat. Basant Soren secured 95,685 votes while BJP candidate Sunil Soren came in second with 81,097 votes.

Late trends indicated a clear win for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led alliance, which had won 40 seats and was leading in six others. A party or coalition needs 41 seats in the 81-seat Assembly to form the government.

While the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won 29 seats, the Congress won 15 and the Rashtriya Janata Dal won four constituencies. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) won two seats.

The BJP won 19 seats and was leading in two. Its alliance partner All Jharkhand Students Union, or AJSU Party, won a single seat. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) won a single seat while the Janata Dal (United) was leading in one seat.
