The executive director of the Wagh Bakri Tea Group Parag Desai died on Sunday, days after he suffered head injuries in Ahmedabad.
The 49-year-old businessman was undergoing medical treatment at the Shalby Hospital in the city after he injured himself last week while trying to escape stray dogs during a morning walk, reported The Hindu. He succumbed to health complications late on Sunday.
“With profound grief, we regret to inform you of the sad demise of our beloved Parag Desai,” the company said in an Instagram post.
The Shalby Hospital said on Monday that Desai was unconscious and unresponsive when brought to its emergency room. “It was stated that the patient fell down after being chased by dogs but apparently there were no dog bite marks on his body,” it said. “A CT scan revealed acute subdural hematoma with bilateral frontal contusion.”
Subdural hematoma is a pool of blood between the brain and its outermost covering. A contusion, or a bruise, occurs when blood vessels break, causing bleeding under the skin.
“The patient was admitted to the ICU [Intensive Care Unit] and was advised to be kept under observation and treatment for 72 hours,” Shalby Hospitals said. “The patient was discharged on the request of his relatives.”
Desai’s last rites were held on Monday morning in Ahmedabad.
The Wagh Bakri Tea Group was founded by Narandas Desai in 1892. Parag Desai was a fourth-generation member of the family that has been managing the business.
