Several parts of Delhi and adjoining areas on Monday recorded heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, ANI reported. The weather conditions led to power cuts in some areas.
Traffic congestion was reported in several parts of the city, including the ITO, Delhi-Noida Direct Flyway and roads near the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Waterlogging was reported in parts of Gurugram, including MG Road, Golf Course Road and Sohna Road, according to ANI. The Gurugram administration has advised private firms to allow their employees to work from home in order to avoid traffic congestion on roads.
Waterlogging disrupted vehicular movement near the Indian Institute of Technology in South Delhi and Hauz Khas Road as well.
Several trees were uprooted after the heavy downpour in the city’s Dhaula Kuan area, images on social media showed.
The India Meteorological Department said that the temperature in the national capital fell by 11 degrees Celsius – from 29 degrees Celsius at 5.40 am to 18 degrees Celsius at 7 am.
India suffered its hottest March in 122 years since the India Meteorological Department started maintaining records. Parts of the country also experienced their highest temperatures on record in April due to a heatwave.
Delhi saw the temperature soar to 49.2 degrees Celsius on May 15 as the heatwave ravaged the country.
The weather department on Monday added that rainfall will continue over Delhi and the National Capital Region for the next few hours.
“Thundershower with moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with a speed of 60-90 km/hour would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR…during the next 2 hours,” the weather department said.
Between March and May, thunderstorms occur for 12 to 14 days, the weather department said. However, this season witnessed only four to five thunderstorms, which were mostly dry.
Flight operations hit
Flight operations at the Delhi airport were also hit due to the bad weather.
“Passengers are requested to get in touch with the airline concerned for updated flight information,” the Delhi airport said in a tweet.
Several other airlines also requested passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
At least 19 flights were diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Amritsar and Mumbai, reported ANI, citing Delhi airport officials.
