The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday won all the 21 municipal corporations in the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls, reported PTI.
The elections were held on February 19 and counting of votes began at 8 am at 268 centres in the state.
The DMK also won 946 wards in corporations, 2,360 in municipalities and 4,388 in town panchayats. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured over 2,000 ward member posts.
The Bharatiya Janata Party won 22 seats in municipal corporations, 56 in municipalities and 230 in town panchayats.
Actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam could not win even a single seat in municipal corporations, municipalities or town panchayats.
In Greater Chennai Corporation, there are a total of 200 wards under 15 zones. Of these, the DMK won 153 reported The Indian Express.
Its allies, the Congress won 13, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi four, the Communist Party of India and the Indian Union Muslim League one and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam two.
The AIADMK secured 15 wards in the Greater Chennai Corporation. The BJP and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam won one seat each. Five Independent candidates also emerged victorious.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that his party’s performance was a certificate of good governance, ANI reported.
The ruling party has also won the municipal corporations of Nellai, Hosur and Vellore, The Hindu reported. It also bagged 51 of the 100 wards in Coimbatore Municipal Corporation. The party will have its first mayor in the city.
Repolling was held on Monday at seven voting booths in four districts following allegations of booth capturing malpractices.
At Besant Nagar in Chennai, a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member had allegedly damaged the voting machine and threatened the election officials.
BJP state unit chief K Annamalai on Tuesday accused the DMK of abuse of power during polling on February 19, ANI reported.
“BJP is moving to the Madras High Court today [Tuesday], with all our complaints and demands of repolling in specific booths,” he said.
In the election on Saturday, state had recorded a turnout of 60.70%. Chennai registered the lowest figure of 43.59%.
Twenty-one cities, 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats voted to elect more than12,000 members. As many as 57,778 candidates are in the fray.
The civic elections were held in the state after a gap of over 10 years. The elections were held up since 2016 on account of legal disputes.
Numerous parties had filed court cases in connection with alleged law and order problems and inadequate reservation for Scheduled Tribes.
