An improvised explosive device, or IED, was recovered from a bag at the Ghazipur flower market in Delhi on Friday, reported ANI. The National Security Guard carried out a controlled explosion to neutralise the explosive.

National Security Guard Director General MA Ganapathy told ANI that the IED weighed three kilograms and was stuffed with explosives RDX and ammonium nitrate.

The Delhi Police’s Special Cell has registered a case under the Explosive Substances Act.

“A proper recce was done before planting the explosive outside the gate of East Delhi’s Ghazipur Flower Market,” the police said. “Police are checking CCTV camera footage.”

A National Security Guard officer told PTI that they were alerted by the Delhi Police about a suspicious object around 11 am. Soon after, a team of bomb detection and disposal experts reached the market, located close to Delhi’s border with Uttar Pradesh, the National Security Guard official said.

Officials from the special cell of Delhi Police and fire department also reached the spot.

“The IED was destroyed around 1.30 pm by using a controlled explosion technique after it was lowered into a deep pit located in the area,” the National Security Guard official said. “The samples of the IED have been collected and a detail report will be sent to the Delhi Police.”

The crude bomb was kept inside a bag left by a customer, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana told NDTV.

The man who left the bag went to the market around 9.30 am on a two-wheeler, according to the TV channel. Other customers in the market spotted the abandoned bag and a flower vendor informed the police about it.
