1.45 pm:

To wrap things up: India crashed to their lowest ever score of 36 Saturday as Australia ran riot to win the opening Test in Adelaide by eight wickets after Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins produced a bowling masterclass. The visitors started the third day of the pink-ball Test on nine for one and with a 62-run lead, looking to build a competitive second innings total. But their hopes were left in tatters on a wicket with bounce and deviation, as Hazlewood took 5-8, including his 200th Test wicket, and Cummins 4-21. Set 90 to win, Australia lost two wickets in the chase, with Joe Burns unbeaten on 51.

(With AFP inputs)

Virat Kohli (paraphrased): Very hard to put those feelings into words. We were 60 ahead. We just collapsed. Literally in an hour you put yourself in a position from where it is impossible to win. Lack of intent and they bowled in consistent areas as well. A combination of both.

Big Bash League rubbing it in:

Ashish Magotra: A dropped catch gives Australia the win. Seems rather appropriate given how the dropped chances allowed them back into the game. When Day 3 began, who thought it would end so quickly!

AUSTRALIA WIN BY 8 WICKETS! This will hurt India. Joe Burns wins it for Aussies by getting to a half century after a dropped catch. He is delighted. Much-needed runs for him.

WICKET! At least Marnus Labuschagne did not get multiple reprieves this time around. He goes for the big shot against Ashwin and skies one to Mayank at mid on. Australia lose their 2nd. 82/2.

WICKET!!! India won’t be losing by 10 wickets after all. Wade is out in the most unfortunate fashion. He flicks one on to Shaw’s pads at short leg, the ball is picked up by Saha and flicked back onto the stumps and Wade is caught short. Bizarre, but great skill from Saha too. AUS 70/1.

AUS 70/0 after 17 overs: There is no reason for Bumrah to be bowling now and Umesh comes back.

Australia 63/0 after 16 overs: After the bowlers blew India away, Australia’s openers are also finding form. Burns hits Ashwin for a couple of fours.

Australia 55/0 after 15 overs:

Australia 54/0 after 14 overs: OUCH. Wade goes for a sweep and India have a man down at short leg. Vihari got hit on his shoulder... not clear yet if he is alright because the broadcasters cut to an advert.

Australia 53/0 after 13 overs: Nothing happening for India at the moment, another Bumrah over comes and goes.

Australia 51/0 after 12 overs: Would have been consecutive maiden overs for Ashwin but Wade gets an outside edge to pick up one. Impressive bowling from the off-spinner, even if it may be in a losing cause.

Australia 50/0 after 11 overs: Change of ends for Bumrah and he strikes Burns on the pads. Kohli takes DRS after the umpire says not-out, but the replay shows there was a faint edge. Nothing’s going India’s way at the moment.

Australia 47/0 after 10 overs: R Ashwin joins the attack and delivers a maiden over first up. The off-spinner keeps a straight line, attacking the stumps, and Joe Burns plays him out watchfully. Australia need 43 runs to win.

Australia 47/0 after 9 overs: Poor, poor bowling from Umesh Yadav, he’s all over the place at the moment (not anywhere near the top of off where he should be). Matthew Wade picks up two fours in the over – first with an easy clip to fine-leg, followed by a confident drive to a juicy half-volley. “No two balls have been bowled at the same spot,” says Glenn McGrath in commentary.

Australia 39/0 after 8 overs: Another short ball, another solid pull for four. Burns the batter again as Bumrah errs. The Aussies are moving along nicely, they need 51 more to win. Kohli might want to look at Ashwin.

Australia 29/0 after 7 overs: The runs keep flowing for the hosts. Wade with a nice clip on the leg side before Burns pulls one hard over square-leg for four. Nine runs from that Umesh over.

Australia 20/0 after 6 overs: A good delivery from Bumrah but Burns gets a thick outside edge past gully for four. Seemed quite intentional from the right-hander. Australia need 70 more to win.

12.13 pm: We’re ready for the start of the second session on day three. Australia need 75 runs to win with all 10 wickets in hand. Can India make a fight out of this?

Session break: India started day three of the day-night Test on 9/1 and with a 62-run lead. What followed after that was the stuff of nightmares.

END OF FIRST SESSION: Australia 15/0. Need 75 more runs.

Australia 15/0 after 4 overs: Burns in some discomfort after a hit earlier from Bumrah. Wade gets another boundary.

Australia 8/0 after 3 overs: Wade is in semi-T20 mode. Another boundary for him that over as Umesh goes wide.

Australia 4/0 after 2 overs: Bumrah with a typically good maiden over. A close call for caught behind as he squares up Burns.

Bumrah time... can he dent Australia’s batting a bit?

Australia 4/0 after 1 over

Australia 4/0 as Wade hits a four but at least someone is optimistic.

Shami unlikely to bowl today... Wade on strike, Umesh to have a go.

Right then, surely no more twists and turns in this Test match? Time for Australia’s innings:

Innings break: What an astonishing morning of Test cricket.

INDIA’S INNINGS IS OVER: Shami retires hurt. India’s innings ends on 36/9 – the lead is 89. Australia need 90 runs to win.

Small joys....

OUCH! Shami gets hit on the forearms by a nasty short ball from Cummins. A break in play.

India’s lowest Test total of all time: 42 against England in 1974.

India 36/9 after 21 overs: Umesh Yadav pulls one behind the stumps for 4! The 42 dream gets closer.

WICKET: VIHARI GONE! Hazlewood has FIVE! India 31/9.

Umesh Yadav denies Josh Hazlewood a hat-trick. Best moment of the morning for India, to be honest.

WICKET! HAZLEWOOD IS ON A HAT-TRICK!!!! Ashwin is giving out caught behind first ball and there is a faint nick on review. NOTHING GOING INDIA’S WAY. India 26/8, that’s 200 Test wickets for Hazlewood.

WICKET! As if Australia have not done enough damage by bowling great deliveries, Wriddhiman Saha throws his wicket away by flicking a ball straight to midwicket. Hazlewood has another. India 26/7.

India 26/6 after 18 overs: Another probing over from Cummins but Vihari is leaving the ball well. Helped himself to a couple of runs through cover.

Here’s a look at the Pujara wicket:

India 24/6 after 17 overs: The deliveries that Pujara, Agarwal, Rahane got were just close to unplayable, it’s worth repeating. The Indian collapse should not take anything away from Australia’s bowling.

India 21/6 after 16 overs: In the Virat Kohli-Steve Smith interview, the Indian captain said Hanuma Vihari was one to watch out for this series. How he must be praying for that to come true right now!

IRRELEVANT STAT UPDATE: It matters not one bit here but it is time to officially end our watch for a Virat Kohli 100 in 2020. What a way for his calendar year to come to a close... this is probably his worst nightmare.

India 19/6 after 15 overs: Pardon us for the brevity, we are still reeling from what we are seeing.

WICKET!!!! THIS. IS. INCREDIBLE. Virat Kohli goes driving at a length ball outside off. Cam Green has almost spilled it but after multiple replays the Indian captain is given OUT. INDIA: 19/6

WICKET! JOSH HAZLEWOOD! Two wickets in his first over and this time Rahane edges one behind to Paine. Rahane is out for a duck as well.

WICKET! OH DEAR! Josh Hazlewood is brought in late into the innings than usual but all he needs is one ball to make an impact. A first-ball wicket to dismiss Mayank Agarwal. Sensational from Australia!

WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE: WICKET! Pat Cummins is the man for Australia once again! Cheteshwar Pujara is out for a 8-ball duck and India are in bit of a bother. Lovely delivery to induce the outside edge. India: 15/3

India 15/2 after 10 overs: Patient stuff as you’d expect from the Indian batsmen.

Ashish Magotra: Oh well. Bumrah did his job. Played out that tricky session last night. Pujara comes in next – will he be a little more proactive? Or Will Agarwal try to do that and just let Pujara be?

India 15/2: WICKET! A bouncer that got Bumrah in a tangle, followed by a slower one on the stumps. Cummins does the trick. End of Bumrah’s innings but he did his job as a nightwatchman.

India 13/1 after 7 overs: After a nervy first couple of deliveries, Agarwal flicks one confidently as Starc strays in line. It’s a boundary and it’s also 1000 Test runs for the Indian opener.

Here we go. Mayank Agarwal and Jasprit Bumrah in the middle. Mitch Starc has the ball in hand...

Another excuse for watching this...

09.10 am: Just how pleasing it was to see Jasprit Bumrah take on the challenge of facing Pat Cummins with the new pink ball last night? He will walk out to bat with Mayank Agarwal today as India look to build on their advantage.

09.05 am: The pitch does not have too much visible wear and tear but there has already been some evidence of variable bounce.

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of day three of the first Test between India and Australia at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

There were even doubts whether he would play in this match when India might prefer four quicks, but Ashwin Ravichandran bagged four wickets as a dominant India held a 62-run lead at stumps on day two of the Adelaide day-night Test after Australian captain Tim Paine ran out of batting partners.

Paine was left stranded on 73 not out when the Australian innings ended at 191 to trail India’s 244 by 53 runs.

Ashwin had figures of 4/55 while Umesh Yadav took 3/40.

At stumps, India in their second innings were one down for nine with Mayank Agarwal on five and nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah yet to score. Prithvi Shaw was bowled by Pat Cummins for four.

Fifteen wickets fell on the day which started when Cummins and Mitchell Starc took just 25 deliveries to knock off the final four India batsmen. The Indian bowlers then took over the match, despite sloppy catching.
