IPL 2020, MI vs KKR as it happened: Brilliant Qdk, Pandya lead MI to commanding win

KKR captain Morgan: We weren’t in the race at all really, being four or five down. Managed to get a score on the board but when Mumbai are like that, they are hard to stop. Full credit to Mumbai, they played well. We have lessons to learn.

After 16.5 overs, MI 149/2 (Qdk 78, Pandya 21): Easy does it. MI show their class to win with three overs and a ball to spare. An eight-wicket victory. MI did not put a foot wrong in the game – brilliant with the ball and dominating with the bat. The opening stand of 94 virtually finished the match off.

After 16 overs, MI 141/2 (Qdk 75, Pandya 15): Some stunning hits by Pandya. Two lovely fours down the ground, then a flick shot for six. Cummins was punished there. Mumbai Indians need 8 runs in 24 balls.

After 15 overs, MI 126/2 (Qdk 75, Pandya 1): Mumbai Indians need 23 runs in 30 balls. 13 runs off the Mavi over as Qdk continues to strike it well. He has almost single-handedly finished the match off.

After 13.3 overs, MI 111/2 (Qdk 60): WICKET! Suryakumar went for the sweep but the under-edge went back onto the stumps. Chakravarthy picks up the wicket.

After 13 overs, MI 110/1 (Qdk 60, Suryakumar 10): A streaky boundary to end the over but Mavi has been impressive. Mumbai Indians need 39 runs in 42 balls.

After 12 overs, MI 103/1 (Qdk 58, Suryakumar 5): Mumbai Indians need 46 runs in 48 balls. They just need to keep things real and they should get home with overs to spare. Only way back for KKR is wickets.

After 10.3 overs, MI 94/1 (Qdk 54): Finally, a wicket for KKR. Mavi gets the edge. Rohit Sharma walking back after making 35. Lovely delivery, seemed to be coming in with the angle but then moved away.

After 10 overs, MI 90/0 (Rohit 31, Qdk 54): MI’s brilliant opening stand has made this a no contest. The required rate is less than a run-a-ball now. Mumbai Indians need 59 runs in 60 balls.

After 9 overs, MI 83/0 (Rohit 24, Qdk 54): No stopping Qdk today. He gets to his fifty off just 25 balls with a big six off Russell. Brilliant batting.

After 8 overs, MI 71/0 (Rohit 23, Qdk 43): Steady over by Chakravarthy. Mumbai Indians need 78 runs in 72 balls. Strategic break time.

After 7 overs, MI 67/0 (Rohit 20, Qdk 42): Rohit Sharma has the best seat in the house. Qdk is hitting them and he is hitting them well. He has 42 off 20 balls and Prasidh Krishna’s two overs have been taken for 30 runs.

After 6 overs, MI 51/0 (Rohit 19, Qdk 27): Just three runs from the Russell over. Mumbai Indians need 98 runs in 84 balls.

After 5 overs, MI 48/0 (Rohit 18, Qdk 25): Quinton’s top-edge flew behind square where Varun’s effort goes in vain. Green could have had a wicket there. Tough chance. Still, the runs keep coming.

After 4 overs, MI 39/0 (Rohit 18, Qdk 16): MI keep the boundaries coming. Two more in the Cummins over for Qdk. MI are making the most of the Powerplay over – required run-rate is below 7 already.

After 3 overs, MI 30/0 (Rohit 18, Qdk 7): MI are off to a great start. This puts the pressure fully back on KKR and soon the shoulders will start to droop. KKR need wickets. Not a great over from Krishna. Three loose deliveries and they were all hit for four.

After 2 overs, MI 16/0 (Rohit 9, Qdk 2): “Patrick, Patrick, Patrick” goes Ian Bishop on air as the pacer strays on the pads of Rohit twice and the ball is glanced away to the boundary on both occasions. (The first given legbyes).

Pat Cummins, the hero with the bat, needs to deliver early wickets. Something that’s been missing from his game in the tournament so far...

After 1 over, MI 7/0 (Rohit 5, Qdk 2): Rohit starts off with a first-ball boundary as Green offered width. Got some drift into QdK with his seam-up delivery.

In Chris Green, KKR have a like-for-like (in more ways than one) replacement for Sunil Narine. It will be interesting to see how he goes tonight. Run-chase to start soon...

Between overs 17-20, KKR scored 49/0 and that will give them a fighting chance against MI. MI leg-spinner Rahul Chahar said the wicket is keeping a little low as well. A few early wickets could make things interesting.

KKR 148/5 after 20 overs (Morgan 39, Cummins 53)

A six off the last ball made it a 21-run over. KKR finish well thanks to a superb partnership of 87 off 57 balls between Morgan and Cummins who came together with the score on 61/5. KKR have a fighting total but will it be enough to beat MI?

KKR 127/5 after 19 overs (Morgan 23, Cummins 48)

Cummins continues to hit it well. A six and four off the second and third balls of Boult’s over made it a good one for KKR. 14 off the over.

KKR 113/5 after 18 overs (Morgan 21, Cummins 36)

Dropped off the last ball. Cummins gets a life. Bumrah’s wide delivery had the Aussie allrounder reaching for it and he got a top edge but somehow, de Kock managed to drop it.

KKR 108/5 after 17 overs (Morgan 17, Cummins 35)

Cummins is almost making it seem like he is batting on a different pitch and against a different attack. Good timing and placement. But can KKR make it to 140? A few good overs could give them something to bowl at.

KKR 95/5 after 15 overs (Morgan 11, Cummins 28)

Cummins batting well for KKR. Not trying to hit the ball too hard, doing the right thing. The runs have come too.

KKR 82/5 after 13 overs (Morgan 9, Cummins 18)

Cummins with two four and a six in the Coulter-Nile over gives KKR something to cheer about.

WICKET! Brutal bouncer by Bumrah gets Russell. The West Indian tried to get out of the way but the ball was too quick for him. The top edge was easily caught by de Kock.

Huge hit from Russell sends the ball deep into the stands and it is lost. And the umpires take a time-out. KKR don’t have much batting to come and this pair will have to do most of the heavy-lifting for them.

WICKET! Two in two for Chahar. Karthik paddled it back onto the stumps. His horror run continues. KKR in big trouble.

Trent Boult is the leading Powerplay wicket taker in IPL 2020 with six wickets and he starts off with just a 3-run over.

7.14 pm: Eoin Morgan is the second England player to lead an IPL team after Kevin Pietersen who led in 17 matches (three wins, 14 losses) - RCB six times in 2009 and DD 11 matches in 2014.

Morgan on the captaincy change: “DK came to myself and head coaches, decided it is for the betterment of the team and he also needs to focus on his batting. It just shows the culture we’ve created.”
