It is now customary to wonder before the start of every Indian Premier League season whether it will be the year when, finally, Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bangalore, on paper, had another power-packed squad as they sought the elusive title. They were back in playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season but ended the year with five defeats on the trot and bowed out.

- For large part of the run-chase, it seemed as if Sunrisers Hyderabad will send RCB to yet another campaign-opening defeat. 3. Two matches bowling second, two matches won for RCB. Who would have thought? After a ABD-led batting effort, however, RCB almost conspired to lose a game they had under control. 4. Royal Challengers Bangalore registered their second successive win, their third of the season, to go top of the table. Virat Kohli returned to form as RCB defeated Rajasthan Royals convincingly. Read the report here and watch highlights below:
5. Virat Kohli’s decision to field first didn’t work out as Delhi Capitals registered a resounding 59-run victory in Dubai. Set a target of 197, RCB could manage just 137/9 with the skipper getting 43 off 39. Read the report here and watch highlights below:
6. Virat Kohli continued his return to form with a brilliant 52-ball 90 to power his team to 169/4. CSK never quite got going in the chase and ended up finishing with just 132/8 in their 20 overs. Read the match report here and watch highlights below:
7. AB de Villiers put on a masterclass to help RCB get to 194/2 after Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first on a sluggish pitch in Sharjah. The RCB bowlers then fired as a unit to help restrict KKR to 112/9 and earn a massive win. Read match report here and watch highlights below:
8. RCB’s inconsistent run continued as they came up short against Kings XI Punjab. Posting a competitive total on the board, RCB were at the receiving end of a KL Rahul batting masterclass that was well supported by Chris Gayle as they lost by 8 wickets. It looked like RCB had managed to mess up the chase once again but then AB de Villiers, who wasn’t held back this time, came to their rescue with a 22-ball 55 to help them beat Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets. RR will walk away from this game feeling that they should have won given RCB needed 35 off 12 balls at one point but in the end, as RR skipper Steve Smith said, they just got ‘ABed’. 10. Losing the toss proved to be a blessing in disguise for Royal Challengers Bangalore as their bowling unit destroyed the Kolkata Knight Riders batting lineup. Mohammed Siraj led the way with a sensational opening spell as RCB restricted KKR to just 84/8 in 20 overs. 11. Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight wickets but Kohli’s men are all but through to the IPL 2020 play-offs. It won’t worry Kohli too much and he will take the opportunity to fine tune the bowling even more. Read match report here and watch highlights below:
12. Batting first in Abu Dhabi, RCB rode on an attacking half-century by Devdutt Padikkal to finish with 164/6 in their 20 overs against Mumbai Indians. Kohli and Co were in the game till the end of 14 overs as MI reached 107/4, but a brilliant knock by Suryakumar Yadav ensured the defending champion got to victory with five balls to spare. 13. Virat Kohli and Co went into this game in search of a win that would seal their spot in the playoffs. Asked to bat first in Sharjah, RCB lost wickets consistently and could only manage a total of 120/7 in their 20 overs as the SRH bowlers put in a brilliant all-round performance. 14. In their final game of the league stage, the equation for both RCB and Delhi Capitals was this: win the match and book your spot in Qualifier 1. Asked to bat first in Abu Dhabi, Bangalore’s innings struggled for momentum and they could manage a total of just 152/7 thanks to Devdutt Padikkal’s half-century. Delhi never looked in doubt during their chase and rode on fifties by Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane to bag a comfortable 6-wicket win. 15. Just like they started the 2019 season, RCB ended the 2020 edition with multiple defeats on the trot. It was not the worst of campaigns after RCB set the tournament alight with some of their early performances.
