Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals into the Indian Premier League playoffs in his first full season as captain of the franchise in 2019. DC remain one of the franchises to have not lifted the IPL trophy in their history of the tournament but have a strong team to challenge in 2020. They reached playoffs despite a shaky second half at IPL 2020. And, with a win over Sunrisers in Qualifier 2, sealed their spot in a first-ever final for the franchise.

  1. In a match that swung one way then the other, Delhi Capitals managed to hold their nerves when it mattered as Marcus Stoinis’ all-round effort and Kagiso Rabada’s sensational Super Over helped them start off with two points. Read the match report here and watch the highlights of below:

3. On a sticky wicket in Abu Dhabi, a venue they were playing in for the first time, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a clinical all-round display to inflict on DC their first defeat of the season. 4. Batting first in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals posted a massive total of 228 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders. Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer starred with the bat before Anrich Nortje bowled a fine spell to help DC win by 18 runs. Read the report here and watch highlights below:

5. Delhi Capitals became the first team to get four wins in the season with a dominating display against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Marcus Stoinis and Kagiso Rabada played the starring roles as DC registered a 59-run victory in Dubai. Read the report here and watch highlights below:

6. Batting first in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals were in a spot of bother at 79/4 but contributions from Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer helped them get to 184/8. Shreyas Iyer and Co then put in a fine performance in the field, with Ravichandran Ashwin leading the way, to bowl-out Rajasthan Royals for just 138. 7. In a match between the two in-form teams of the season, Delhi batted first and posted a sub-par total of 162/4, with Shikhar Dhawan scoring an unbeaten 69 off 52. In reply, Mumbai rode on half-centuries from Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav to win the match comfortably (despite just the two balls remaining at the end). Against the upbeat Royals boosted by a win in their previous match and by the return of Ben Stokes, the Capitals got off to a sticky start but Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship with fine half-centuries. Capitals though only managed 161 after a poor finish to their innings. 9. Chasing Chennai Super Kings’s total of 179 in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals rode on a first IPL century by Shikhar Dhawan. But it was Axar Patel who stole the show in the last over by hitting three sixes off Ravindra Jadeja to take his team home. Read the match report here and watch highlights below:

10. Despite Shikhar Dhawan’s century, the other batsmen failed to contribute as DC could only manage 164/5 in their first innings. In reply, KXIP started slowly losing wickets at regular intervals but Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell steadied the ship after a Chris Gayle cameo before Jimmy Neesham and Deepak Hooda took the team to a victory. 11. After a superb start to the tournament, momentum becomes an issue for Delhi as they lost two matches on the trot and suffered the third defeat in five. Iyer and Co had KKR on the ropes after early wickets but the two-time champions turned things around with a superb partnership between Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine. 12. A brief stutter had now become more than a hard stumble for DC. Iyer and Co suffered another huge defeat that not only kept them on 14 points but sent their NRR dipping even further. Should a scenario arise where five teams are tied on 16 points, DC’s chances don’t look good. 13. Having lost their last three matches, Delhi Capitals needed a win to get back on track and secure a playoffs berth. Asked to bat first by table-toppers Mumbai Indians in Dubai, the Capitals simply couldn’t get going and were restricted to a paltry 110/9 in their 20 overs. The defending champions then rode on an unbeaten 47-ball 72 by opener Ishan Kishan to win by nine wickets and secure a top-two finish at the end of the league stage. 14. Delhi Capitals took on RCB in their final match of the group stage and a win for either team would secure their spot in Qualifier 1. Shreyas Iyer elected to field first in Abu Dhabi and his bowlers put in a fine effort to restrict Bangalore to just 152/7. The pick of the bowlers was Anrich Nortje who returned with figures of 3/33. DC then rode on half-centuries by Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane to seal a 6-wicket win. However, RCB too secured a playoff berth thanks to their net run-rate. 15. Delhi suffered their fifth defeat in six matches when they were pretty much blown away by Mumbai Indians is Qualifier 1. 16. Marcus Stoinis stepped up with a near-perfect all-round display in the knockout match against SRH as DC returned to the form they showed in the early part of the tournament.
