Australia scored 285/7 after being put into bat.
You can follow our complete World Cup coverage here.
Morgan: We were outplayed. Thought we bowled well upfront. Little bit unlucky as Australia played and missed a lot. They built a fantastic partnership.
Wicket got a little bit better, but still challenging. Wicket this morning was soft when we started. Choosing to bat would’ve been a horrific decision. We pegged it back really well. For a long time it looked like they’d get 330. When you’re 20/3, it pegs you back substantially. Given the circumstances, it’s not hugely disappointing. Our fate is in our own hands. Everything we need to turn around is simple. Won’t search for anything that’s not there.
10.40 pm: England now have back-to-back defeats and it has thrown the World Cup wide open. Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh can pip them to the post as well.
Finch: It was nipping around and seaming. We had to see through that early spell from Woakes. It is good to get a hundred against England but I have had a few low scores against them as well.
AUSTRALIA WIN BY 64 RUNS
What a win for the Aussies. Starc picks up four as Rashid finds Stoinis at cover. England were comfortably second best today and their hopes of reaching the semi-finals are now in some danger. They have New Zealand and India next. Australia, on the other hand, become the first team to reach the semi-finals in this edition.
After 43.4 overs, England 211/9 - Jofra Archer out!
Slower delivery and Archer hits it straight to Warner at long on. What a day to get on the Lord’s members board, Jason Behrendorff. Once again, it was a perfect setup and Finch has hardly got it wrong with his field placements today.
After 41.3 overs, England 202/8 - Chris Woakes out!
Behrendorff now has four and it is yet another exquisite take from the Australian fielders. Maxwell, in the longest part of the ground, makes it look like a playground routine: Running sideways, he plucks it a few inches away from the boundary line and chucks it back to Finch.
C Woakes c Finch b Behrendorff 26 (34)
After 41 overs, England 200/7 - Woakes 25, Rashid 8
England able away to 200. Rashid stepped out against Lyon and deposited the ball over the reach of Starc at long-on for a six. They just need to throw their willow at most deliveries now.
After 39.3 overs, England 189/7 - Moeen Ali out!
Now, Moeen Ali makes the long walk back to the pavilion. It’s falling apart like the roads in Mumbai during monsoons. Behrendorff also gets his third. Ali fends at it and gets a nick, simple catch for Carey.
M Ali c Carey b Behrendorff 6 (9)
After 39 overs, England 184/6 - Woakes 21, Moeen Ali 2
Starc keeps getting better and better. Just one from the over and the batsmen are not able to find the boundaries. The hosts need something special with their hopes fast fading. The required run rate has touched nine an over.
After 37 overs, England 177/6 - Ben Stokes out!
Is that the match in the bag? What a yorker! Wasim Akram would have been proud of that. There was a hint of reverse for Starc and Stokes could do nothing about that yorker. The left-armer is the highest wicket-taker in the tournament for a reason. That was simply extraordinary.
B Stokes b Starc 89 (115)
After 35 overs, England 173/5 - Stokes 88, Woakes 15
Three boundaries for England. After another economical over from Lyon – four coming from it – Stokes takes on Cummins. He steps out and clubs boundaries through cover and extra cover. He is taking risks but getting the rewards for it as well. The support needs to come from the other end and Woakes also plays his part, pulling it to deep-square to bring up the third boundary of the over.
After 34 overs, England 156/5 - Stokes 77, Woakes 9
Stokes and Woakes get boundary each from the Cummins over. The pacer was a tad short on that occasion and the batsmen targeted the area square of the mid on region.
After 33 overs, England 147/5 - Stokes 73, Woakes 4
Just two runs from the over, excellent one from Lyon. It could have been just one had there not been a rare misfield at cover. England, apart from preserving wickets, need a couple of big overs as well.
After 32 overs, England 145/5 - Stokes 72, Woakes 3
Just four from the over. Stoinis is having a fine outing today, cutting down the pace on the ball and using cutters to good effect. The required is slowly creeping up.
After 31 overs, England 141/5 - Stokes 70, Woakes 1
Two sixes from the over from Stokes, which takes him to the seventies. He attacks the shorter boundary on the leg side. The first ball of the over from Maxwell was short – it was put away into the stands. The second one was a cracking sweep shot and the ball just about went over the boundary line.
After 30 overs, England 129/5 - Stokes 58, Woakes 1
There was nearly a run out there after Stokes and Woakes try to sneak through for a risky single. Smith had one stump to aim at from cover and it went just over the stumps. Another wicket and champagne may very well be on ice for Australia.
After 27.2 overs, England 124/5 - JOS BUTTLER OUT!
This could be a huge moment in the game. Buttler steps out and clubs it towards deep mid-wicket and Khawaja runs to his right and plucks out a brilliant catch just inches away from the boundary line. England fans cover their eyes in horror.
J Buttler c Khawaja b Stoinis 25 (27)
After 26 overs, England 117/4 - Stokes 51, Buttler 22
Stokes belts a full-toss down the leg side to get to his fifty. The batsmen are recycling strike with a lot more regularity. Buttler gets a boundary with a thumping drive straight down the ground the ground for a boundary,
After 25 overs, England 109/4 - Stokes 49, Buttler 16
Brilliant bowling from Nathan Lyon. He gets hit for a four off the first ball, thanks to some poor work by skipper Aaron Finch at mid-on, but comes back to bowl five dot balls. The off-spinner even manages to beat Ben Stokes’ bat a couple of times.
After 24 overs, England 105/4 - Stokes 45, Buttler 16
Another good over from Marcus Stoinis, just three runs come from it. The right-arm medium pacer 0/13 from 3 overs at the moment.
After 23 overs, England 102/4 - Stokes 43, Buttler 16
Shot! Nathan Lyon tosses it slightly up and Ben Stokes sweeps it powerfully for four. But the left-hander then holds on to his hamstring with a grimace. England will hope it’s nothing serious. Five runs come from the off-spinner’s fourth over.
After 22 overs, England 97/4 - Stokes 38, Buttler 16
Buttler survives...twice! First, the right-hander gets struck on his pad and the Aussies take DRS after the umpire says not-out. But the review shows that the impact was outside off. Then, Buttler sneaks a single by diving in as Smith’s brilliant effort misses the stumps by inches. He was a gonner if that was a direct hit. Four runs come from that Marcus Stoinis over.
After 21 overs, England 93/4 - Stokes 36, Buttler 15
Good over from Pat Cummins. England had scored 34 runs in the last five overs but the right-arm quick stops the run-flow and concedes just two singles in his fifth over.
After 20 overs, England 91/4 - Stokes 35, Buttler 14
Stokes is not holding back. He steps out and hammers Stoinis over mid-on for a boundary. England need a partnership here.
After 18 overs, England 79/4 - Stokes 26, Buttler 11
The good thing about this partnership is that they are not letting the bowlers bog them down. Stokes and Buttler are aggressively running ones and twos now. They need a big partnership to even have a sniff in the game now.
After 17 overs, England 74/4 - Stokes 23, Buttler 10
Buttler is not hanging back. If it’s in the slot for for him, he is going to attack you. He drives Starc with aplomb and got a boundary. Stokes is also showing aggressive intent. The Australians have hardly allowed the batsmen to get away.
After 15 overs, England 57/4 - Stokes 13, Buttler 3
Steady from Lyon so far. One suspects that Buttler will be the key here. Australia sniff blood and are readying Starc to bowl another spell.
After 13.5 overs, England 53/4 - JONNY BAIRSTOW OUT!
Huge, huge breakthrough and this could have large scale repercussions for England, who are in dire straits at the moment. Short ball does the trick for Behrendorff again and Bairstow this tim was temped to go for the hook. Cummins takes his second well judged catch. This time, he plucks one at deep mid-wicket. Bairstow throws it away.
J Bairstow c Cummins b Behrendorff 27 (39)
Nathan Lyon comes on.
After 12 overs, England 47/3 - Bairstow 26, Stokes 7
Much better from England but Cummins is operating at a probing length. Four singles from the over. The pacer is judiciously using the short delivery as well.
After 11 overs, England 43/3 - Bairstow 25, Stokes 4
It takes a dozen deliveries for Stokes to get off the mark. He steps out and clubs Behrendorff through extra cover for a four. The left-hander is far from comfortable, though.
After 10 overs, England 39/3 - Bairstow 25, Stokes 0
Sensible batting from Bairstow, respecting deliveries that are moving into him and waiting for deliveries going away or angling into him. He gets a boundary off Cummins from the over.
After 9 overs, England 35/3 - Bairstow 21, Stokes 0
Wide and full from Behrendorff and Bairstow gets a boundary. Rare lose delivery from the left-armer, who has been bang on the money so far. Stokes has faced nine balls and is still not off the mark.
After 7 overs, England 30/3 - Bairstow 16, Stokes 0
Well, well. There could be more trouble in store for England at this rate. Bairstow played a lose shot out outside off and the ball just went over the mid-off to find the boundary.
After 5.5 overs, England 26/3 - Eoin Morgan out!
England are in dire straits! This is stunning from Starc. He teased Morgan with balls moving away from him and removes him with a bumper. Morgan hooks but can’t clear fine leg. Simple catch for Cummins.
E Morgan c Cummins b Starc 4 (7)
After 5 overs, England 21/2 - Bairstow 7, Morgan 4
Behrendorff continues to operate an uncomfortable line outside off-stump and Morgan decide to take matters in his own hands. He steps out and plods it down the ground for a four. The Aussies will not mind that. England look all at sea.
After 4 overs, England 15/2 - Bairstow 7, Morgan 0
Almost everything going Australia’s way at the moment. Morgan fends uncomfortably outside off and it nearly took his edge on it’s way through to the keeper. Wicket maiden for Starc.
After 3.3 overs, England 15/2 - JOE ROOT OUT!
What a start this is for the Aussies! It nips back in and Australia have the prized wicket of Joe Root. Exceptional delivery from Starc and Root was caught plumb in front, he didn’t bother with a review there.
J Root lbw b Starc 8 (9)
After 3 overs, England 15/1 - Bairstow 7, Root 8
A fraction full and and angling on the leg-side and Bairstow’s on drive fetches him a four. There is movement on offer for the left handers. England will have to play well to see out this early phase without losing further wickets.
After 2 overs, England 11/1 - Bairstow 3, Root 8
Root gets his second boundary. There is swing on offer from Starc and the England Test captain whips it away to the fence. Is Starc still feeling his hamstring, which we saw while he was batting?
After 1 over, England 4/1 - Bairstow 0, Root 4
WICKET IN THE FIRST OVER!
Behrendorff knocks down James Vince’s stumps on the second ball of the innings. What a start for Australia! The ball goes between bat and pad as the batsmen tries to drive and off go the stumps. The opener is out on a duck, Joe Root the new man in. He sends the last ball for four to open the account for the hosts.
Time for England’s chase. Jason Behrendorff has the new ball. Here we go
AUSTRALIA FINISH AT 285/7
Stokes won the battle with Carey in the first half of the over, stifling him on the full and slipping in a clever slow bouncer. However, the left-hander picked himself up in the last three deliveries, carting the England all-rounder for two boundaries, including the last ball. Carey first went over mid-on and then took his front leg out of the way and plodded it through extra cover. Good finish for Australia but do they have enough on the board? England fought back admirably in the last 20 overs after Finch and Warner were running away with it.
Stokes to bowl the final over.
After 49 overs, Australia 274/7 - Carey 28, Starc 3
Two boundaries from Carey from the over. A slow delivery and and a bouncer disappears to the fence. Good pick-up shots from the Australia keeper, who read Archer superbly. Much needed good over that from Australia. Eleven from the over.
After 48 overs, Australia 263/7 - Carey 18, Starc 2
Oh dear, Starc is seen twitching and stretching out after completing a single. Has he pulled a hamstring? Worrying times for Australia. Let’s hope he is fine.
After 47.1 overs, Australia 259/7 - Pat Cummins OUT!
Another one bites the dust for Australia! Cummins fends one outside off and Buttler does well to dive across to his right and take the catch.
P Cummins c Buttler b Woakes 1 (4)
After 47 overs, Australia 259/6 - Carey 17, Cummins 1
Another good over from Wood. Carey is taking is front leg out and trying to attack the off-side field. Here, he creams one through cover for a boundary.
After 45.3 overs, Australia 250/6 - STEVE SMITH OUT!
Well, let’s just assume that the English crowd were cheering for Joe Root. The boos ring loudly around the home of cricket and Smith is livid with himself. He couldn’t clear the boundary and it’s a simple catch for Archer at long-on. Wickets continue to tumble.
S Smith c Archer b Woakes 38 (34)
After 45 overs, Australia 248/5 - Smith 38, Carey 8
The boundaries are few and far between and it’s hard running between the wickets (Yes, it’s Smith who is now driving the doubles) that is getting them runs. Australia need a boost from here to get close to 300.
After 43 overs, Australia 233/5 - Smith 30, Carey 1
Another good over from Wood. He started with a wide, which was a slightly unfair call with Smith moving across the stumps. But he beats the former Australian captain with a peach of a delivery from length.
After 41.5 overs, Australia 228/5 - CALAMITOUS RUNNING
Needless run out there for Australia, just when it looked like Stoinis had got his eye in. Smith didn’t even turn for the second when the throw from Bairstow came in from long on. Stoinis just kept running and it’s the simplest of run outs for England, who have come back in the game in a big way.
M Stoinis Run out 8 (15)
After 41 overs, Australia 222/4 - Smith 22, Stoinis 7
Stoinis gets a boundary off Wood. That was short and wide and was clubbed away on the off-side. Again, more sloppy work in the deep, that should have been cut off.
After 40 overs, Australia 215/4 - Smith 21, Stoinis 1
England have a spring in their step now. There is a slip in place for Rashid, who bowls another economical over. In the last ball of the over, Smith was completely flummoxed by a googly.
After 39 overs, Australia 213/4 - Smith 20, Stoinis 0
Excellent over from Wood. He teased Stoinis outside off and is able to extract bounce off a length. Just one from the over and wicket to boot.
After 38.2 overs, Australia 213/4 - GLENN MAXWELL OUT!
Big wicket for England and that’s the wicket they needed at this stage. He tries to run the ball to third man and takes the top edge. Simple catch for Buttler. Wood, after a poor start, gets his length spot on here.
G Maxwell c Buttler b Wood 12 (8)
After 38 overs, Australia 212/3 - Smith 19, Maxwell 12
Six, four...and it disappears from Maxwell’s blade. No point delivering it in the slot, Archer. Maxwell has looked dangerous all tournament and this game could change on its head in the matter of a few overs.
After 37 overs, Australia 200/3 - Smith 18, Maxwell 1
Back-to-back boundaries for Steve Smith! Mark Wood pitches it too full and the right-hander drives it straight back for four. He follows that up with a delicate late-cut that beats third man. Top batting. Australia get ten runs from that over.
The moment Finch got to his century...
After 35.3 overs, Australia 185/3 - Smith 4
CENTURY AND OUT!
A moment of jubilation followed by utter disappointment for Aaron Finch. The Australian captain gets to his hundred but is dismissed off the next ball. He mis-times a pull off Jofra Archer and is caught at fine-leg. He must be gutted. Glenn Maxwell is the new man at the crease.
Finch c Woakes b Archer 100 (116)
After 35 overs, Australia 183/2 - Finch 98, Smith 4
Slow start for Smith here but Stokes is in the middle of a fine comeback spell. Changing the pace regularly and not allowing room outside off, the batsmen, for once, are made to work for their runs.
After 34 overs, Australia 178/2 - Finch 96, Smith 1
A few dot balls here and it’s a much-needed breather for the English bowlers. Morgan brought Archer back, a good attacking move to keep the foot on the pedal.
Steve Smith is welcomed to the crease with loud boos.
After 32.2 overs, Australia 173/2 - KHAWAJA OUT!
Superb delivery from Stokes. There was a hint of movement from a fuller length and the ball goes through the gate. England need more of this.
U Khawaja b Stokes 23 (29)
After 32 overs, Australia 173/1 - Finch 92, Khawaja 23
Fifty partnership between Finch and Khawaja. Another boundary from Finch allows Finch to get into the nineties. Toss up outside off from Rashid and it’s thumped to extra cover for another four. Pin drop silence at Lord’s.
After 31 overs, Australia 166/1 - Finch 88, Khawaja 20
Archer makes up for his earlier misfield by cutting off a certain boundary at deep cover. Not a bad over from Stokes.
After 30 overs, Australia 162/1 - Finch 85, Khawaja 19
There is nip and extra bounce for Stokes. More good overs for the luckless Rashid. In the 29th over, the Australia skipper nearly nicked one outside off to the keeper.
Pace now for England. Stokes is back on.
After 28 overs, Australia 155/1 - Finch 82, Khawaja 15
Dear, oh dear! It’s going horribly wrong for the hosts. After Archer’s misfield, Buttler misses an easy stumping and Khawaja survives. The left-hander, in the next ball, rubs salt in England’s wounds with a confident cut shot that gets him four.
After 27 overs, Australia 148/1 - Finch 81, Khawaja 9
There is sloppiness on the field as well from England. Archer there at cover lets Finch and Khawaja complete an easy single. There was no slip in place here and it allowed Finch to lean forward for the drive and got a boundary in the third man region.
After 26 overs, Australia 141/1 - Finch 76, Khawaja 7
Good control from Rashid, three singles from the over.
After 25 overs, Australia 138/1 - Finch 74, Khawaja 6
Another six for Finch! Full from Moeen and he gets the treatment again. This time, it sails over the long on fielder and well over the ropes. Finch could get another 150 at this rate. This is scintillating stuff from the Australia captain.
After 24 overs, Australia 129/1- Finch 67, Khawaja 4
Dabs, singles and paddles....decent start for Khawaja here. Not a bad over from Rashid. Slip in place for the new batsman.
After 22.4 overs, Australia 123/1 - DAVID WARNER OUT!
Extra bounce for Moeen Ali and a leading edge takes the ball to Joe Root to cover. The England Test captain nearly makes a mess of it but holds on....now, we hear the boos from the Lord’s crowd. Warner has a sheepish grin on the way back. Good comeback from Ali after being clubbed for a six by Finch.
D Warner c Root b Ali 53 (61)
After 21 overs, Australia 112/0 - Finch 55, Warner 52
Just two singles from the over. There is a slip in place and it’s a tidy over from Ali. Wickets, though, are the key for England.
After 20 overs, Australia 110/0 - Finch 54, Warner 51
Fifty for Warner. Believe it or not, there were hardly any boos that could be heard, which was good to see. Rashid is bowling it a lot fuller than Ali but the singles are coming at walking pace. Four from the over.
After 19 overs, Australia 106/0 - Finch 52, Warner 49
Fifty for Finch with a single of Ali. The openers merrily rotate strike and they have steadily upped the ante. 62 have come from the last nine overs. Six from the over.
After 18 overs, Australia 100/0 - Finch 48, Warner 47
Another hundred partnership for these two. What a stand this has been. Rashid offered a hint of width to Warner and it was pummeled away for a boundary on either side of the wicket. Take a bow, Finch and Warner.
After 17 overs, Australia 90/0 - Finch 48, Warner 37
Seven runs from the first over from Moeen Ali. A slip was in place but the bowler allowed the openers to play off the back foot.
Moeen Ali comes on
After 16 overs, Australia 83/0 - Finch 47, Warner 31
You are not going to gain much from hitting the deck hard, Mr Wood. It comes at a comfortable length for the buccaneering Finch, who unflinchingly clubs him for two boundaries in the over. Looks like the skipper has stepped on the accelerator.
After 15 overs, Australia 75/0 - Finch 38, Warner 31
The Aussies are recycling strike with ease and now, they are getting ones and twos with minimum fuss. England need some inspiration.
Ben Stokes is given the ball.
After 14 overs, Australia 71/0 - Finch 37, Warner 29
Expensive from Wood. You can’t pitch it even fractionally short to these two and they are galloping towards a hundred-run stand. Twelve from the over and there are some worried looking faces in the England captain.
After 13 overs, Australia 59/0 - Finch 33, Warner 22
Two boundaries for Finch from the over. There was a bit of aggression from the skipper, even stepping out and trying to swat it Matthew Hayden-style. Woakes, though, ends the over with a peach, squaring up Finch.
After 12 overs, Australia 50/0 - Finch 25, Warner 22
Okay-ish start for Wood. There is pace but a looser in the second ball, drifting down leg, allows Finch to tuck it away for a boundary down fine leg. Fifty partnership for the openers.
Mark Wood comes into the attack.
After 11 overs, Australia 45/0 - Finch 21, Warner 22
Woakes continues to pitch it and length and gets it to shape away. Tidy over, just a single from it. The openers are in no hurry. Preserving wickets is the key for Australia.
After 10 overs, Australia 44/0 - Finch 20, Warner 22
Archer pitches it short again....ufff, and it gets the treatment. Warner cuts away in style and it’s another boundary. This has been a terrific start for the openers.
After 9 overs, Australia 36/0 - Finch 19, Warner 15
England have threatened whenever he has pitched it up to the stumps. There is movement. Archer has been poor but Woakes has manged to trouble the batsmen somewhat. Just a single from the Woakes over.
Aaron Finch and David Warner have combined for 447 runs in six innings, continuing a trend that sees Australia average 53.81 for the first wicket in ODIs since 2015, the highest in the world – Read
After 8 overs, Australia 35/0 - Finch 19, Warner 14
Archer started the over badly, over-pitching and allowing Warner to work it on the leg side for a three. The comeback from the pacer was good and got one to seam off the wicket and between Finch’s bat and pad.
After 7 overs, Australia 32/0 - Finch 19, Warner 11
England retain the review. Woakes was convinced he had Finch. Replays showed that the ball was shading the bails but the umpire’s call was not out. Not a bad call that. First sign of Warner cutting lose today. He chips over the top and gets a boundary through the mid-off region.
After 6 overs, Australia 26/0 - Finch 18, Warner 6
DROPPED! That will go down as a missed opportunity but that ball was travelling. James Vince at point dives full length at point off a Finch cut shot but can’t get his right hand on it. Agonising for the hosts in the early stages.
After 5 overs, Australia 23/0- Finch 15, Warner 6
Meanwhile, at Lord’s, Finch motors along. Fractionally short from Woakes, and Finch gets the toe end of his bat on the pull and it’s another boundary for him. Change in length sees the England pacer far more effective. He has had the measure of Warner so far.
3:17 pm: We wish Brian Lara a speedy recovery. Get well soon, Prince.
After 4 overs, Australia 18/0 - Finch 10, Warner 6
First boundary for Warner. Short from Archer and Warner was quick on the pull, goes square of fine leg and into the boundary. Decent start for the Australians here.
After 3 overs, Australia 13/0 - Finch 9, Warner 2
Probing Warner outside off is Wokaes. The opener is happy to see off the danger. The final ball of the over was chipped away through gully and it’s a couple for the batsmen.
After 2 overs, Australia 11/0 - Finch 9, Warner 0
Terrible first ball from Archer. Juicy half-volley and wide outside off, dispatched to the boundary by Finch. Back of a length and straighter from the England pacer in the rest of the over, which the Australian captain sees off with minimum fuss.
After 1 overs, Australia 7/0 - Finch 5, Warner 0
Ohhh...hard hands from Finch with one that moved a touch outside off and it’s a boundary. The ball was travelling and even Root’s leap couldn’t help him get his hands on it. Good finish from Woakes, he got the ball to shape into Warner.
2:58 pm: The national anthems are done. For those wondering, Eoin Morgan was singing it. In come Finch and Warner, who is booed by a section of the England fans, predictably.
2.55 pm: The players make their way down the Long Room and the famous stairs... time for the national anthems! We can’t wait for this to get started....
