Youth Olympic Games silver medallist Mehuli Ghosh won the women’s junior (under-21) 10m air rifle gold in the Khelo India Youth Games here on Saturday, PTI reported.
Ghosh came back from shooting in the Bundesliga in Germany only a couple of days ago and napped for half an hour in the gallery before the competition kicked off.
The 18-year-old from West Bengal asserted her class, shooting scores of 629.4 in the qualification and following it up with 252.1 that left her biggest challenger Elavenil Valarivan (Gujarat) in her wake.
Hockey
Haryana take on Punjab in the boys U-17 hockey final to be played here on January 14. In Saturday’s semi-finals, Punjab were fortunate to get past a formidable Odisha unit on the strength of a 6-5 tie-breaker decision after the team were locked 2-2 at full time.
In the other semi-final, the Haryana boys found the target twice in the space of a few minutes to subdue a plucky Uttar Pradesh side 3-2. Odisha can consider themselves unfortunate to not have got the better of Punjab on the day as for long spells they held sway over the game.
Swimming
Unheralded Kalyani Saxena swam to gold and glory in the U-21 women’s 400 medley,earningthe first swimming gold for Gujarat. For a third successive day, action in the pool was dominated by swimmers fromMaharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka who between them shared 21 of the 33 medals at stake.
Maharashtra claimed seven medals (four gold, three silver), Delhi eight (three gold, three silver and two bronze) and Karnataka bagged six (two gold, silver and bronze). Kalyani made light of the opposition and finished in 5:27.28 to even ease up her pace before the others could touch the finish pad.
Bengal dominate gymnastics
Bidisha Gayen and Satyajit Mondol were the stars for Bengal with two medals each in the Under-21 gymnastics action at the Khelo India Youth Games here on Saturday. The West Bengal team finished the day with a total of eight medals that included two gold, five silver and a bronze.
Maharashtra, however, maintained their overall lead by winning four of the eight gold medals on offer, taking their total to six. Arik Dey impressed the judges once again to walk away with a gold and a silver for the home team. He won the all-around competition on the opening day. Vaidehi Abhay and Omkar Shinde won the uneven bars and rings respectively.
Asmita Paul secured the first gold for Tripura in the women’s artistic gymnastics. She later went on to add another bronze for the beam.
