Day two: The insatiable Virat Kohli’s hunger for runs stood out yet again against Windies. Read here.

Post-match presentation:

‘Credit to India. Disappointed with the batting, did not get any partnerships’: Kraigg Brathwaite

‘Not something for me to comment upon (West Indies approach). We just focussed on our game and what we are good at. Really happy for Prithvi Shaw, the guy showed that he is just different quality and that’s why he’s been fast tracked into the team. Century in Ranji, Duleep trophy debuts and Test as well. And happy for Jadeja too. Overall a very clinical performance from us’: Virat Kohli

‘I scored runs, the team won and we played good cricket. Very happy with my debut Test match’: Man of the match, on his debut, Prithvi Shaw

Some post-match reaction:

India’s last two Test matches at home have both broken the record for their biggest ever Test win.

Vs AFG: By an innings & 262 runs
Vs WI: By an innings & 272 runs

WEST INDIES 196 ALL OUT! Jadeja gets his third as Shannon Gabriel fittingly ends the match with an attempted big shot with a fielder in the deep. Windies suffer a thrashing, India win by an innings and 272 runs.

West Indies 192/9 after 49 overs

Dropped. Prithvi Shaw puts down a sharp chance at short leg off Ashwin, the inevitable is delayed.

West Indies 192/9 after 48 overs - Lewis is out

WICKET! Jadeja gets his second. Lewis goes for the big hoick (surprise, surprise) and misses one that was fired in at 97kph. Doesn’t bother reviewing. India one wicket away...

West Indies 191/8 after 48 overs - Dowrich 13* , Lewis 4*

Jadeja and Ashwin running through their overs in no time. One run each in the last couple of overs. Lewis showing the inkling to play a big shot, Dowrich though, is looking compact in defence.

West Indies 189/8 after 46 overs - Dowrich 13* , Lewis 4*

Boundary to Lewis as a carrom ball goes awry from Ashwin and he bangs it in short. Pulled away for four.

West Indies 185/8 after 45 overs - Dowrich 13* , Lewis 0*

Final session of the day (and the match, perhaps) underway. Jadeja begins proceedings for India... and finishes a maiden over in the time it took us to type this out.

Ashwin from the end to Lewis who is on a pair.

West Indies 185/8 after 44 overs - Dowrich 13*

WICKET! Ashwin gets his second wicket thanks to a good review. Bishoo gloved the ball but the umpire had initially given it not out. There was a clear spike though. And that is tea too. West Indies lost 7 wickets in the session.

D Bishoo c Pant b Ashwin 9 (12b, 2x4)

West Indies 172/7 after 40.4 overs - Dowrich 10*

WICKET! Now, Paul holes out in the deep. It is almost as if the West Indies batsmen thought the match is an audition for the IPL. Their approach just doesn’t make any sense.

K Paul c Yadav b Jadeja 15 (15b, 2x4, 1x6)

West Indies 151/6 after 35.4 overs - Dowrich 4*

WICKET! Kuldeep gets his fifth wicket of the innings and it is the big one. Powell caught at silly point after making a splendid 83. This is Kuldeep’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Good innings but India simply has too many runs to play with.

K Powell c Shaw b Kuldeep Yadav 83 (93b, 8x4, 4x6)

West Indies 138/5 after 29.3 overs - Powell 74*

Kuldeep floated it up and Chase played the shot but he failed to keep it down and hit it straight to Ashwin. Easy catch. The stand was worth 41 runs off 41 balls.

R Chase c Ashwin b Kuldeep Yadav 20 (24b, 3x4)

West Indies 133/4 after 29 overs - Powell 73*, Chase 16*

Powell continues to impress. He is picking the spinners and when the ball is in the slot, he is not afraid to play lofted shots over the infield.

West Indies 97/4 after 22.4 overs - Powell 53*

WICKET! Oh no! What was Ambris thinking? He has been stumped. WI 97-4. They were 79-1 at one point. Second wicket in the over. This is going to be over soon. The Windies want it to get over quickly.

S Ambris st Pant b Kuldeep Yadav 0 (3b)

West Indies 97/3 after 22.1 overs - Powell 53*

WICKET! Hetmyer pays the price for a rash shot and Kuldeep gets another wicket. The wrist-spinner threw it up and Hetmyer went for power, misread the delivery and the top edge was well taken by Rahul. But is this what the West Indies really need?

SO Hetmyer c Rahul b Kuldeep Yadav 11 (11b 0x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

West Indies 96/2 after 21 overs - Powell 53*, Hetmyer 8*

A wonderful fifty for Powell – off just 55 balls. He has looked comfortable against the spinners and played some very attractive shots. It is his 6th Test fifty.

West Indies 79/2 after 19 overs - Powell 45*

WICKET! Kuldeep strikes to send back Hope just when the stand was starting to look good. The ball was Kuldeep’s regular leg-spinner. It turned in sharply from way outside the right-hander’s off-stump and Hope’s technique let him down here.

S Hope lbw b Kuldeep Yadav 17 (34b, 1x4, 1x6)

West Indies 78/1 after 18 overs - Powell 45*, Hope 17*

Powell and Hope are playing some very positive cricket. India still have a lot of runs to play but this is wonderful to watch. A Windies fightback is what every neutral was hoping for.

West Indies 54/1 after 13 overs

Kieron Powell continues to attack the Indian bowlers as he mightily pulls Umesh Yadav behind square for a six.

West Indies 43/1 after 10 overs

An eventful first over after lunch as Kieron Powell hits Ashwin for a six, then appears to be dropped by Rishabh Pant behind the sticks off a carrom ball, before hitting the off-spinner for a boundary off the last ball.

12.10 pm: We are back for the second session. R Ashwin to begin proceedings.

11.53 am: Star Sports is showing National Geographic’s “Mega Icons” episode on Virat Kohli during the lunch break. In case you missed our review of the episode, here it is.

11.45 am: The difference between the West Indies and Windies...

LUNCH: West Indies 33/1 after 9 overs

Good over by Kuldeep to bring to an end what was a near-perfect session for India but for a brief period of resistance from Chase and Paul in the first innings. Ashwin has been the go-to man for Kohli once again, taking four wickets this morning.

28 overs, 120 runs and 5 wickets in that session for India. Nine strikes away from a big win.

West Indies 32/1 after 8 overs - WICKET!

OUT! Brathwaite gone. Ashwin strikes for India. The Windies captain hits one straight to Shaw at short leg. Turned from offstump and Brathwaite just tucked it to Shaw who makes no mistake.

Kuldeep from the other end, last over before LUNCH.

West Indies 28/0 after 7 overs - Brathwaite 6, Powell 21

Umesh Yadav comes on early to replace Shami. And bowling over the wicket to Powell, strays on his pads a few times. One of them tucked away for a four through square leg.

West Indies 22/0 after 6 overs - Brathwaite 6, Powell 15

Shami settling into a good rhythm now, bowls a good over that ends with a full ball to Powell though. Hit through cover for four. An outside edge didn’t carry to KL Rahul.

Ashwin bowls a maiden over next up, starting to get turn with the new ball as well.

West Indies 18/0 after 4 overs - Brathwaite 6, Powell 10

India push mid-on back and mid-off to the edge of the (imaginary) circle for Powell. Just a single in that over.

West Indies 17/0 after 3 overs - Brathwaite 6, Powell 10

Boundary in that over for captain Brathwaite when Shami strayed on to his pads. A lovely flick of the wrists. Consistency of line proving to be an issue for Shami.

West Indies 13/0 after 2 overs - Brathwaite 2, Powell 10

Alright then, Powell has decided he will take the aggressive against Ashwin. Comes down the track twice in that over, hits a four through long off and a sis over long on. Good use of the feet, but aggression against Ashwin might prove costly. Let’s see how this pans out.

West Indies 3/0 after 1 over

Will Shami find his radar with the new ball? It’s a steady over that started with a no ball. Half an appeal for a LBW but the ball was drifting down leg.

Ashwin takes the new ball from the other end.

West Indies second innings begins ...

WEST INDIES ALL OUT FOR 181 - INDIA ENFORCE FOLLOW ON

Ashwin with another carrom ball, Gabriel is left clueless and stumped by Pant. India have enforced the follow-on. Ashwin picks up 4 wickets.

West Indies 175/9 after 46 overs

DROPPED! Rishabh Pant reacts very late to an outside edge off Bishoo and puts another catch down, this time off Jadeja’s bowling. Bishoo gets a couple of boundaries in the last couple of overs, sweeping Jadeja and Ashwin.

West Indies 163/9 after 44 overs - TWO WICKETS IN ONE OVER

And he does it again. Ashwin removes Sherman Lewis for 0 on his debut with a carrom ball that spins the other way. The batsman had no clue. Bowled! The offstump uprooted.

West Indies 159/8 after 43.2 overs - WICKET!

Doesn’t take long for Ashwin to make an impact. While Chase was at ease against Kuldeep, he is left clueless by a peach by Ashwin. Tossed up again, turns in late from outside off stump and the expansive cover drive takes an inside edge. Chase bowled for 53. Drinks will be taken.

West Indies 159/7 after 43 overs - Chase 53, Bishoo 1

Good over by Umesh, just a single off it.

West Indies 158/7 after 42 overs - Chase 51, Bishoo 1

DROPPED! Ashwin comes into attack and immediately gets turn and bounce. Flight, drift, slower through the air and gets the outside edge off Chase, but Rishabh Pant can’t hold on. The ball hits his gloves and bounces up and he can’t take it in the second attempt either. Pant’s technique will be discussed again, as he went at that with hard hands.

West Indies 157/7 after 41 overs - Chase 51, Bishoo 1

FIFTY FOR CHASE! With a couple of boundaries in Kuldeep Yadav’s over — both lovely drives on the off-side — the Windies batsman gets his half century. 150 up for WI as well. Wonder if Kohli would be changing the bowler next over, with Kuldeep proving very expensive this morning.

West Indies 147/7 after 39 overs - Chase 42, Bishoo 0

WICKET! The short ball does the trick for Umesh Yadav as Keemo Paul is dismissed. First breakthrough of the day for India. Ian Bishop talks about Umesh set up Paul with a series of good length balls and then surprised him with a bouncer. Had no room to pull, the top edge goes to Pujara as mid-wicket.

Paul out for 47 off 49

West Indies 142/6 after 38 overs - Chase 41, Paul 43

SIX! Keemo Paul is in a punishing mood. Sweeps Kuldeep over long on and it flies all the way. The Indian spinner did shorten his length in that over but the full ball was once again punished.

West Indies 135/6 after 37 overs - Chase 40, Paul 37

Maiden over by Umesh to start with. Much better lines and lengths by him, going past the outside edge with one peach of a good length delivery.

West Indies 135/6 after 36 overs - Chase 40, Paul 37

Couple of boundaries for Chase in that over as Kuldeep continues to be expensive. He’s flighting the ball alright, but often too close to the batsman. The full length has been dealt with aggression by both the batsmen. Almost goes all the way with the lofted hit over long on, does Chase off the last ball.

Time for Umesh from the other end.

West Indies 127/6 after 35 overs - Chase 32, Paul 37

50 partnership between Keemo Paul and Roston Chase! Comes up in quick time, nearly run-a-ball. Comes up with a boundary through third man as Paul overtakes Chase. Shami’s problem has been inconsistency with the line.

India’s inability to finish off the tail has followed them from England, by the looks of things?

West Indies 123/6 after 34 overs - Chase 33, Paul 32

Another over, another boundary for Keemo Paul. This one a confident cover drive off a flighted delivery by Kuldeep. Murali Karthik reckons Kuldeep has struggled to find the right length, been either too full or short.

West Indies 117/6 after 33 overs - Chase 30, Paul 28

Keemo Paul continues to live dangerously. Survives a run-out chance, gets beaten a couple of times, then scores a streaky boundary with an outside edge. Shami bowls one down the leg side that’s full and fast and races to the boundary for four byes.

The partnership is now in the 40s.

West Indies 106/6 after 31 overs - Chase 29, Paul 23

Prithvi Shaw left ducking for cover more than once today already at short leg as both Chase and Paul look to attack Kuldeep Yadav early on. Kohli has cover in the deep, though. So just a couple of singles.

West Indies 106/6 after 31 overs - Chase 29, Paul 23

More measured approach from Chase as Shami starts from the other end. A couple of runs to start the over, with a push through covers but defensive after that by Chase. Shami, interestingly, is already looking for the yorker. Couldn’t quite get it right.

West Indies 104/6 after 30 overs - Chase 27, Paul 23

100 up for West Indies in the first over of the day. 10 runs from the first over after just one defensive shot by Keemo Paul. So no real change of approach from the Windies, then. The over started and ended with a sweep shot for four off Kuldeep, who continued to toss it up.

9.30 am: Roston Chase and Keemo Paul are in the middle. Kuldeep Yadav starts proceedings for India. Windies resume at 94/6.

9.26 am: Some pre-match reading for you.

9.20 am: Hello all and welcome to the live blog of day three in the first Test between India and West Indies in Rajkot.

Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja thrashed a clueless West Indian attack with hundreds as India headed towards a demolishing win with another near-perfect performance on day two. The hosts piled up 649/9 in their first innings before reducing West Indies to 94 for six in 29 overs when stumps were drawn for the day.

After Prithvi Shaw’s pehnomenal ton on debut on day one, skipper Kohli (139) and Jadeja (100 not out) made hundreds as India put up a mammoth 649 for nine in their first innings before declaring at tea.

It was a maiden Test ton for Jadeja, who had to wait for almost six years to reach three figures in the five-day format.

In response, the West Indies were in all sorts of trouble, first against pacer Mohammad Shami before the spinners cleaned up the middle order. They trail India by 555 runs and the hosts will fancy themselves to bowl them out twice by day three.
