West Indies 94/6 after 29 overs - Chase 27*, Paul 13*

Stumps on Day 2. India have dominated with the bat and the ball and the approach of the West Indies batsmen has been baffling. They truly play only the T20 style now. No sense of graft, no attempt to play through the new ball. West Indies trail by 555 runs with 4 wickets remaining in the innings.

West Indies 74/6 after 25.2 overs - Chase 21*

WICKET! Kuldeep strikes. He threw it up, the batsman went for the extra cover drive, missed it and was bowled. One would have thought that with just 10 minutes to go, a batsman would have just looked to play out the overs. But...

S Dowrich b Kuldeep Yadav 10 (35b, 1x4)

West Indies 74/5 after 25 overs - Dowrich 10*, Chase 21*

A slow climb back to respectability for WI but they are at least giving it a shot now. Another 10 minutes to before play is called off for the day.

West Indies 61/5 after 21 overs - Dowrich 7*, Chase 15*

India should probably play their A team in these matches to make it more interesting for spectators. To expect people to pay money to watch this contest is a bit much.

16.1: WICKET! Jadeja strikes first ball! Ambris goes for a hoick over long on (or long off, couldn’t really tell with the way he was shaping up) and gets an outside edge that nestles into Rahane’s hands at first slip. Windies 49/5

West Indies 49/4 after 16 overs - Ambris 10*, Chase 3*

Chase seems to have decided attack is the best form of defence. First a slog sweep off Ashwin goes for four, then another slog gets an inside edge into the vacant square leg region, gets three.

Time for Ravindra Jadeja from the other end...

West Indies 40/4 after 15 overs - Ambris 10*, Chase 3*

All about survival for the West Indies now. Can they find a way to get a partnership going?

West Indies 32/4 after 11.5 overs - Ambris 9*

RUN OUT! Hetmyer is now run out. This is only getting worse for the West Indians. Poor, poor cricket by the once mighty team. Hetmyer called for the quick single and the resultant mix-up meant both batsmen ended up on the same side. No quality.

SO Hetmyer run out (Jadeja) 10 (28b 1x4 0x6) SR: 35.71

West Indies 21/3 after 9.2 overs - Hetmyer 4

In Ashwin’s last over, a ball had turned sharply. Hope, once again, played for the turn but this just went on straight with the arm. It hit the top of the off-stump. WI are collapsing here.

SD Hope b Ashwin 10 (22b 2x4 0x6) SR: 45.45

West Indies 16/2 after 7 overs - Hope 9*, Hetmyer 4

Shami seems to be having some injury trouble. He is clutching his side as he walks off the ground. He was in pain as he bowled the last ball of the over and was calling for the physio even before that.

West Indies 7/2 after 4.1 overs - Hope 4*

WICKET! Shami strikes again to send back the other opener, Powell. The angle from around the stumps induced the false shot and trapped him in front of the stumps. What a start for India and Shami!

K Powell lbw b Mohammed Shami 1 (6b)

West Indies 2/1 after 2.2 overs - Powell 0*

WICKET! Shami strikes with a beautiful delivery to send Brathwaite back. Great seam position and it cut back in sharply. This is a big wicket considering Brathwaite’s form over the last year and it will hurt WI.

KC Brathwaite b Mohammed Shami 2 (10b)

West Indies 2/0 after 2 overs - Brathwaite 2*, Powell 0*

Vital for the West Indies to get off to a good start. Conditions are still very good for batting but the openers will need to apply themselves.

West Indies 0/0 after 0 overs - Brathwaite 0*, Powell 0*

And we are off.

India 649/9 after 149.5 overs - Jadeja 100*, Shami 2*

Finally, Jadeja has a Test hundred. All those years back when he got those three triple centuries, everyone thought we would see a lot more of this. Maybe this will be the trigger. Virat Kohli has declared the innings immediately after Jadeja reached the milestone. This is India’s highest total against West Indies in Tests.

India’s session: 31.5, 143 runs, 4 wickets, RR 4.49

India 626/9 after 144 overs - Jadeja 79*

Umesh’s cameo comes to an end but Jadeja is still going strong. He hit it straight to the fielder in the deep.

U Yadav c Lewis b Brathwaite 22 (24b, 2x6)

India 624/8 after 143 overs - Jadeja 78*, Umesh 21*

The runs continue to flow. Jadeja and Umesh are playing the big shots and West Indies are just waiting for the innings to end.

India 604/8 after 141 overs - Jadeja 69*, Umesh 10*

Jadeja has started going for his shots after getting to his fifty. He has already hit two sixes since reaching the milestone. Expect a lot of entertainment if Umaesh can continue to support him.

India 576/8 after 138 overs - Jadeja 51*, Umesh 0*

A delightful late cut takes Jadeja to 50 off 87 balls. He follows it up his typical celebration. It is his 10th Test fifty and he has never managed to convert it into a 100. Will today be the day?

India 571/8 after 136.5 overs - Jadeja 46*

WICKET! Bishoo gets another one. He traps Kuldeep in front of the stumps.

Kuldeep Yadav lbw b Bishoo 12 (32b 2x4)

India 556/7 after 132 overs - Jadeja 40*, Kuldeep 3*

Is the idea just to keep the Windies out in the sun for as long as possible? Time for drinks and a message from the dressing room.

India 545/7 after 128.1 overs - Jadeja 32*

WICKET! Ashwin walking back after Bishoo got one to bounce and turn. It pitched in line with the off-stump and then turned sharply. Ashwin may have been dismissed but he wouldn’t mind this.

R Ashwin c Dowrich b Bishoo 7 (15b 1x4 0x6) SR: 46.66

India 542/6 after 126 overs - Jadeja 30*, Ashwin 6*

It will all come down to team orders now. What is the target India have in mind? Jadeja and Ashwin will look to bat as long as possible but India will probably want to bowl before the close of play today so that they can gauge the conditions better.

India 534/6 after 123.4 overs - Jadeja 28*

WICKET! Kohli gives it away, Lewis gets the big wicket. Ball hit the bottom of the bat. Easy catch for Bishoo. It was a slowish delivery (128 kmph) on a slow pitch and that probably did the Indian skipper in.

V Kohli c Bishoo b Lewis 139 (230b 10x4 0x6) SR: 60.43

India 513/5 after 120 overs - Kohli 126*, Jadeja 20*

Lovely four helps Virat get to 1000 runs for the year (at an average of 62.75). He becomes first Indian to score a 1000 runs in three consecutive years.

India 506/5 after 119 overs - Kohli 119*, Jadeja 16*

A maiden over to start things off after lunch.

India 506/5 after 118 overs - Kohli 119*, Jadeja 16*

And that is lunch time. 29 overs, 142 runs, 1 wicket. RR 4.90. India have dominated the session and the match. Pant and Virat punished the Windies bowlers but the wicket of Pant brought them some respite. Bishoo also failed to hold on to a caught and bowled chance that would have sent Kohli back to the dressing room.

India 502/5 after 117 overs - Kohli 119*, Jadeja 16*

Easy does it. India are once again building a partnership. They will want to go on and on for as long as possible. The sun will not be kind to the Windies players.

India 497/5 after 116 overs - Kohli 116*, Jadeja 14*

The batsmen are now playing for lunch but Virat is still running the ones and twos hard. So much to learn from the way this man bats.

India 494/5 after 110 overs - Kohli 106*, Jadeja 4*

Jadeja has joined Kohli in the middle and these are conditions he will also know well. The fall of Pant’s wicket will give the Windies some breathing space in terms of scoring rate.

India 470/5 after 108.1 overs - Kohli 103*

WICKET! Completely against the run of play, Pant is dismissed. He failed to read the googly from Bishoo. Went for the big shot. Got the top edge. Easy catch. Misses out on a ton – it would have been his second consecutive century. This is how he plays they’ll say but on away tours, they’ll hope he attaches a bit more value to his wicket.

R Pant c Paul b Bishoo 92 (84b 8x4 4x6)

India 470/4 after 108 overs - Kohli 103*, Pant 92*

Kohli’s in cruise mode – ready to move into higher gear but with Pant around, he simply hasn’t needed too.

India 465/4 after 107 overs - Kohli 102*, Pant 88*

Kohli gets his 24th ton, 17th as captain and his 4th Test ton this year. 101 off 184 balls with just 7 fours. What a knock!

24 Test centuries for Kohli in 123 innings and as they said during the commentary on television, only Don Bradman got there in fewer inns (66).

India 458/4 after 106 overs - Kohli 97*, Pant 86*

This is just too easy and the West Indies are just going along at their own pace. Kohli’s innings has been remarkable for one reason alone – it has just six fours and his strike-rate is just 53. He just wants to stay there. He just wants to score the big runs. Plenty the likes of KL Rahul can learn from him.

India 451/4 after 104 overs - Kohli 93*, Pant 83*

Last 24 balls, 45 runs. Pant has broken loose and the Windies are wilting.

India 440/4 after 103 overs - Kohli 91*, Pant 74*

Bishoo into the attack now. The runs are flowing again. The West Indies have looked powerless to stop the runs. With another six, Pant brings up the 100-run partnership with Kohli. It has taken them just 117 balls. The left-hander is also catching up with Kohli in a hurry.

India 427/4 after 102 overs - Kohli 89*, Pant 63*

Once again, Chase was too straight and Pant hammered him down the ground for four and then he followed it up with a six! The third ball was bowled slower and it almost rolled back onto the stumps. Things never get boring with Pant around.

13 overs in the morning session, 63 runs. RR 4.85.

India 417/4 after 101 overs - Kohli 89*, Pant 53*

Paul almost got Pant there. It was wide off the off-stump and Pant went for the big shot, got the edge and it just went past gully. It went for four but it was streaky. Now, that should have made him circumspect but instead, he hit the next ball, across the line, for six to get his fifty off 57 balls. That is also the end of the first hour of play.

India 406/4 after 100 overs - Kohli 89*, Pant 42*

The off-spinner Chase needs to try and do more in conditions that will help him more than the pacers. At the moment, he is too straight. Now, that is a line for ODIs. In Test cricket, if you want take wickets, you will have the tease the batsmen; you will have to get them to do something different.

India 403/4 after 99 overs - Kohli 88*, Pant 40*

Good session for West Indies continues. Another over with just one run conceded. This is allowing them to take control a little. Pant is looking like he wants to start hitting out again. This is part of the learning curve for him.

India 402/4 after 98 overs - Kohli 88*, Pant 39*

Just one run off each of the last three overs. Some relief for the West Indian bowlers given that the other 6 overs off the morning session went for 35 runs.

India 401/4 after 97 overs - Kohli 88*, Pant 38*

Pant continues to play and miss from time to time. Enough to keep the bowlers interested. Paul has replaced Gabriel in the attack now.

India 400/4 after 96 overs - Kohli 88*, Pant 37*

Lewis just rattled Pant a little in the last over with a superb bouncer. It rose above the shoulder and took Pant who was getting onto the front foot by surprise. It seemed to get a reaction out of the keeper and he seemed to settle only after Kohli had a chat with him.

India’s first hundred runs came off 120 balls, the second hundred took 125, the third was by far the slowest – taking 195 balls, and the fourth hundred has taken 140 balls.

India 399/4 after 95 overs - Kohli 88*, Pant 36*

A boundary each for Kohli and Pant in that over, both flicked through (their) midwicket region, Kohli playing in front of square. Even Gabriel is looking non-threatening this morning.

35 runs in the first 30 minutes this morning. Cruise control.

India 389/4 after 94 overs - Kohli 83*, Pant 31*

The short stuff nearly works against Pant, a pull shot falls just short of deep square leg. Off the last ball though, the radar is a bit off from Lewis and Pant pulls this fine for a boundary.

50-partnership between Kohli and Pant.

India 383/4 after 93 overs - Kohli 82*, Pant 26*

‘Quintessential Virat Kohli,’ says Sunil Gavaskar. No arguments there. With a picture-perfect cover drive, he scores his first boundary of the morning... Moves into the 80s, the Indian captain. Both West Indies bowlers, by the way, have decided to try the short stuff against Pant. A short square leg in place.

And another milestone for Kohli:

India 377/4 after 92 overs - Kohli 77*, Pant 25*

Ian Bishop made this point before play began. Virat Kohli has almost looked like he is having an extended nets session in the middle ever since he walked out to bat. Started out with determination to just spend time in the middle, was barely troubled at all and looked like, in his head, that he can’t be dismissed. Has just started where he left off, this morning. Defensively sound, just looking for the singles early on.

India 373/4 after 91 overs - Kohli 74*, Pant 24*

A single each for Kohli and Pant in that Gabriel over. Much like he did last evening, Gabriel tries the bouncer strategy against Pant but this one doesn’t rise about the Indian’s hips! And this is a new ball as well.

India 371/4 after 90 overs - Kohli 73*, Pant 23*

Here we go. Rishabh Pant hits a boundary off the first ball he faces. On the pads by Sherman Lewis, flicked with ease for four. Minimum effort, there. Kohli gets off strike early with a single to midwicket.

9.30 am: Here we go, Keemo Paul runs in to bowl with a new-ish ball (five overs old). Virat Kohli resumes on 72*.

9.27 am: Some reading for you as we get ready for day two action...

9.15 am: Hello all and welcome to our coverage of day two in this first Test between India and West Indies in Rajkot.

Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut as the hosts took opening day honours in the first match against the West Indies on Thursday.

Shaw, 18, also became India’s second-youngest century maker after Sachin Tendulkar as he blasted his way to a century in 99 deliveries in Rajkot.

India were 364 for four at stumps after electing to bat first. Skipper Virat Kohli, on 72, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, on 17, were batting at close of play.

But the day belonged to Shaw, a diminutive right-handed opener and Indian Premier League star for the Delhi Daredevils, as he and Cheteshwar Pujara put on a 206-run second wicket partnership.

“I was a bit nervous to start off but when I got in, I got comfortable. I just tried to play my natural game. I was just thinking that it’s another game for me and then it just happened,” said Shaw.

“Playing for India, it was a big thing for me. I wanted to make this chance count. It was a good challenge for me and I think I did well,” he added.

He led India’s fightback after they lost opener Lokesh Rahul for nought in the very first over off Shannon Gabriel.

Shaw was finally caught and bowled by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo for 134 in the last over before tea. His knock came in 154 balls with 19 boundaries.
