8.40 pm: So with that, we come to the end of the penultimate day of action for India at the Asian Games. Highlight was the qualification of the women’s squash team and boxer Amit Panghal to their respective finals. Women’s hockey team brought home the silver medal after two decades. There were three medals from sailing too, while Vikas Krishan added bronze after having to pull out his middleweight bout. The men’s squash team also finished with a bronze.
Overall, a good day – would have been better had the hockey team brought home the gold, but oh well. Such is sports.
Join us on Saturday for the final day where we will look back at what has been a action-packed fortnight while bringing you updates through the day.
We’ll leave you with the medal tally.

7.37 pm : Some athletics reading...
Bahrain finished joint-top of the Asian Games athletics table with 12 golds – but not everyone is rushing to congratulate them.
That is because not a single track win at Asia’s regional Olympics would have been achieved without “naturalised” athletes who were born in Africa.
Bahrain’s policy of scouting and offering nationality to talented foreign athletes – which is entirely legal – has stoked controversy for years, but the results have been particularly stark at this Games in Indonesia.
All 10 individual athletics gold won by Bahrain were earned by runners born on the African continent – Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Morocco.
Of the two gold-winning relays teams, all but two athletes were also of African origin.

6.55 pm: Squash
Joshna Chinappa upstaged eight-time world champion Nicol David as the Indian women’s squash team outplayed defending champions Malaysia 2-0 to enter its second successive Asian Games final in Indonesia on Friday.
The women’s team created the biggest upset in the draw, blanking the David-led Malaysia in the semifinals. The team, comprising Joshna, Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Sunayna Kuruvilla, will face Hong Kong in their quest to improve on silver from 2014.
Joshna, World No.16, had a point to prove after a crushing loss against familiar foe Annie Au in the final pool match against Hong Kong. India lost the tie 1-2 and finished behind Hong Kong, resulting in a tougher opponent in Malaysia, the most dominant team in the Games’ history.
“I was very upset yesterday as you must have seen. I did not play the way I was supposed to play. Spoke to my parents and coach and that helped. Today, I just wanted to be myself. Nicol is such a champion. She always plays a fair game and today was no different. Really happy to have come through,” said Joshna after a 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 10-12, 11-9 victory.

5.47 pm: ‘Things will be different at the Asian Games’
“Defending is discipline and discipline is good. It was well organised. You see the big countries – the ones that are winning the medals, men or women, have good defence and good PC conversion. And, if you have good defence, you can create more chances. For me, it doesn’t work the other way around, wherein you create a lot of opportunities but no good defence. I was happy with that and the next step is to create more – which we will do at the Asian Games.”
Coach Sjoerd Marijne had spoken to Scroll just after the World Championships. The result: India have scored 39 goals and conceded just one.

5.29 pm: Paragliding
Paragliding’s regional chief insisted the sport was safe on Friday after its Asian Games debut – adding that riding a motorbike in Jakarta was more dangerous.
Three crashes marred the competition at the regional Olympics in Indonesia, with at least two athletes helicoptered to hospital after plunging to the ground.
Paragliding’s safety has been in focus since the death of a Hong Kong flier in July. But Sanjay Thapar, secretary general of Air Sport Federation of Asia (ASFA), brushed off any concerns.
“Paragliding is safer than riding a motorbike in Jakarta,” Thapar told journalists, referring to the Indonesian capital’s notoriously heavy traffic.
China’s Wang Jianwei suffered a broken leg, and Afghan competitor Lida Hozoori sustained spinal injuries after falling 15 metres (50 feet), according to emergency services. A Japanese athlete was also hurt in a fall.
ASFA officials, who hope the sport will be contested at the next Asian Games and even at the Olympics, said all three fliers have recovered from their injuries. (AFP)
