Know more about Arpinder Singh...

Arpinder Singh is only member of the men’s athletics field team to have participated at a prior Asian Games event. The 25-year-old finished fifth at Incheon, with a jump of 16.41 metres. Undoubtedly India’s number one triple jumper currently, the National Inter State Championships in Patiala in 2010 was when Arpinder broke onto the scene, finishing second as a 17-year-old. Coach Bedros Bedrossian reckons Arpinder is getting back to his best as the triple jumper won the Federation Cup and the Inter-State Championships, the latter with a jump of 17.09 metres. Starting off as a 100 metres sprinter, Arpinder’s failure to qualify for the Rio Olympics will rankle deeply with the ONGC athlete nicknamed ‘Bobby’.

7.00 pm: GOLD MEDAL FOR SWAPNA

Barman takes the gold with a strong finish in the 800m. It was the personal best throw in Javelin that turned the tide in her favour with a 200-point swing almost. She just had to finish close to Chinese athlete in the final race and she went past her in the final 100 to finish 4th in the heat and collapsed on the track in delight! She has fought through immense pain and has managed to overcome that. And set a PERSONAL BEST too! Brilliant!

Men’s Triple Jump final: Rakesh, who was limping after his 4th attempt, passed his 5th and comes back for one last shot at bronze – but his jump of 16.38m is not going to help. But what an effort! He collapses after the jump, clearly struggling.

6.07 pm: Athletics

Men’s triple jump final: Rakesh finishes his 4th attempt and walks away limping. He already has a bandage on his left knee and it looked like he pulled up with something during the second of the three jumps. His 16.15 is not an improvment and pushes him to 5th.

Arpinder doesn’t improve his 16.77m with his 4th - 16.08m - but stays in the lead.

5.58 pm: Athletics

India’s Dheeraj Rangi is out of medal contention after losing his quarter-final bout in the men’s 64 kg category against Mongolia’s Chinzorig Baatarsukh 0-5 by a unanimous decision. R Vishal has more:

Dheeraj started the bout well, taking the attack to Baatarsukh but the Indian had no answer to jabs the 2016 Olympian threw at him in the final round, which left the referees with little doubt about the final result. India’s day therefore ended in disappointment after starting off with so much promise as Amit Panghal and Vikas Krishan had assured themselves of a medal.
