Soon after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu ensured that India would win at least two badminton medals from the 2018 Asian Games, nine-time national champion and now a commentator, Aparna Popat tweeted about how she was fed up of people asking her why India doesn’t enjoy success at the Asian Games.

The other person who would have been haunted by the 36-year individual medal drought in the Asian Games since 1982 would have been Saina Nehwal. Seeded second, the then 28-year-old was touted to win the gold medal eight years ago in Guangzhou given that she had won three back-to-back titles and her first Commonwealth Games gold in the second half of the year and was the player in form.

Sreeshankar needed to better 8.09m in his final attempt to bag an unlikely bronze. But it was a foul. He will finish with a best attempt of 7.95m. “I’ll be back!” he says looking into the camera. And we are sure the 19-year-old will be. Good solid showing over the last two days by him.

G Lakshmanan wins the bronze in men’s 10000m final – the first medal in this event in 20 years for India! The Bahrain racers finished first and second by a whopping distance (even lapping Lakshmanan!) but it’s a famous medal for India, nonetheless. After Gulab Chand in 1998, India have a men’s 10000m medal at the Asiad.

Hima Das gets the silver. She breaks the national record again, with a time of 50.79 seconds but Bahrain’s Naser wins with a scorching time of 50.09. Nirmala finishes fourth. It was always going to be tough for Hima, as Naser has run sub-50 times five times this year, while the Assamese’s previous personal best was 51 seconds.

China won their first singles medals in badminton at Asian Games in 1974. Every year since they have had at least one player on the podium. And that run has now come to an end. No Chinese singles player will finish on the podium at the Asian Games 2018.

Chinese Taipei scored 59/60 in the fourth set to put some pressure on India, but it isn’t enough. The Indians score 58 but still win the tie by three points. The final score is 230-227 to India and they are through to the final, where they will face Korea. The final is on Tuesday.

Two shots of 8 hamper Chinese Taipei again as India extend their lead to four points at the end of three sets. India should wrap up this semi-final easily now. One more set to go.

Both teams score three 10s in the second set but an 8 by Chinese Taipei does them in, as India take a 114-113 lead after two sets.

The Indian team manages to hit three 10s compared to Chinese Taipei’s two, but Aman Saini and Abhishek Verma also score two 9s, which results in the score being tied 57-57 after the first set.

The men’s team is off to a good start, blanking UAE in their first pool match. Sathiyan G, Harmeet Desai and Sharath Kamal win their matches in straight games.

India’s compound men’s team semi-final against Chinese Taipei has just begun.

Sarjuabala Devi wins her preliminary bout by unanimous decision, outscoring Ghaforova 30-27.

India needed only a score of 16 from their last three shots of the match to win, but Aman Saini and Abhishek Verma made it a tight finish by hitting an 8 each. Rajat Chauhan then needed to score a minimum of 9 to tie the scores, but managed to hit 10, sealing the match for India by one point. India are through to the semi-finals, where they will take on Chinese Taipei at 3.30 pm IST.

India take a three-point lead after the third set as they shoot five 10s in the set, taking their total score to 173. Philippines’s score is 170 going into the final set.

The judges revise India’s first-set score to 56, meaning both teams are tied. In the second set, Philippines edge India 57-56 to take the lead in the tie.

PV Sindhu joins Saina Nehwal in the semi-finals after winning the deciding game 21-14 against Jindapol. Sindhu will take on either Chen Yufei or Akane Yamaguchi in the semis.

After the first set, India lead Philippines 56-55 in the men’s compound team quarter-finals. Both teams scored three 10s in the first set.

Sindhu steps it up again in the deciding game, taking a 11-7 lead into the break. That included a run of seven straight points for Sindhu.

Nitchaon Jindapol launches a fightback in the second game, completely dominating Sindhu and beating her 21-16. We’re into a decider.

Manoj Kumar loses his round of 16 match to Kyrgyzstan’s Abdurakhmanov Abdurakhman by a unanimous decision in the men’s welterweight category. The 31-year-old Indian took too many heavy blows to his head in the last round and looked out of it.

An expected result coming from the table tennis as China beat India 3-0. In the third match of the tie, Wang Manyu beat Madhurika Patkar 11-4, 11-4, 11-2.

No trouble for Sindhu as she wins the first game 21-11 against Jindapol.

PV Sindhu has a healthy lead of 14-8 against Nitchaon Jindapol, who is committing too many errors, in the first game.

1.49 pm: Table tennis – women’s team

Ayhika Mukherjee gives a good fight to China’s Chen Meng but loses in four games: 11-8, 8-11, 14-12, 11-9. Manika Batra then goes down in straight games 11-5, 11-6, 12-10 to Zhu Yuling, as China take a 2-0 lead in the tie.

1.32 pm: Shooting

India’s Sheeraz Sheikh and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa fail to reach the men’s skeet final. They finish on 120 and 119 out of 125 points respectively, ending up 13th and 14th respectively. That’s it for shooting at the Asian Games. India end up with nine shooting medals – two gold, four silver and three bronze.

1.30 pm: Archery

Muskan Kirar, Madhumita Kumari and Jyothi Vennam take India into the final of the women’s compound team event after a superb last set. India were trailing by three points going into the fourth and final set, but shot two bullseyes and as many 10s, along with two 9s to take their total to 58/60 in the set. Chinese Taipei had to get all 10s in their final three shots but managed only one! So it will be either a gold or silver for India.

Saina Nehwal secures herself a medal with a nonchalant backhand flick winner, beating Ratchanok Intanon 21-18, 21-16 in the quarter-finals. What a comeback win this was! Saina was trailing 3-12 in the first game! This is also India’s first medal in women’s singles at the Asiad, as Saina becomes the first Indian singles players since Syed Modi to win a medal at the continental event.

In the men’s TBR 500m Tail Race, India finish fourth among five teams with a time of 2:24.965. This was not a medal race.

Saina Nehwal has a 11-9 lead in the second game against Ratchanok Intanon and looks in control of the match. Can she hold on and assure herself of a medal?

The Indian men’s eventing team has just received its silver medal. Proud day!

The Indian men’s team stays alive in the match by winning the third set 25-23, but Japan lead the match 2-1.

Saina Nehwal wins five points in a row to take the first game 21-18! Incredible turnaround after the interval. She was trailing 3-12. Saina was helped by Ratchanok switching off and committing too many errors but credit to the Indian for not giving up. The momentum is with Saina now.

For the first time in this match, Saina is in the lead. It’s 19-18 to the Indian now.

She’s back level! After a lonnnng rally, Ratchanok finds the net and the scores are level at 17-17 in the first game! Saina was trailing 3-12!

Some unforced errors by Ratchanok after the interval allow Saina to close the gap to 10-14 in the first game, but she is still conceding too many points at the net.

It’s been a very poor start by Saina Nehwal as she trails Ratchanok Intanon 3-11 at the break of the first game of their quarter-final.

India also win a team silver medal in eventing, coming behind Japan. Two silver medals to kick things off on Sunday!

It’s a silver medal for India in the eventing individual event as Fouaad Mirza and his horse Seigneur Medicott finish second with a score of 26.40, behind Japan’s Oiwa Yoshiaki and his horse Bart L Jra, who got 22.70. This is India’s first individual equestrian medal since the 1982 Asian Games, which were held in New Delhi.

12.08 pm: Volleyball

Japan take a 2-0 lead against India, taking the second set 25-22. It will be tough for India to mount a comeback from here.

11.57 am: Shooting

India’s Rashmi Rathore and Ganemat Sekhon are out of contention for the women’s skeet final. Sekhon finished 10th in qualification with 112 points out of 125, while Rathore was placed 12th with a score of 111.

The Indian women’s 500m TBR team finishes fourth in their semi-final with a time of 2:33.987 and this means they go into the B-final, which does not make them eligible for a medal.

11.27 am: The badminton action is about to begin, with Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu looking to book semi-final spots and assure themselves of a medal.

Not to be for the Indian men’s handball team as they go down 31-35 to Chinese Taipei in their final group match despite a brave effort in the second period. India have lost all their group matches, meaning they have failed to progress.

India finish second in the repechage round of the men’s 500m TBR with a timing of 2:23.162 and have qualified for the semi-finals.

India’s men’s compound team has won their round of 16 match against Qatar by four sets to love. The Indian team, comprising Rajat Chauhan, Aman Saini and Abhishek Verma win 57-52, 56-55, 56-54, 58-52 after hitting three bullseyes.

India lose their second men’s regu group match, to Malaysia 0-2. They had lost to Korea by a similar margin on Saturday.

Sheeraz Sheikh shoots a perfect score of 25 in the fourth series of the men’s skeet qualification to take his total to 97/100. He is currently in the top six. Angad Vir Singh Bajwa shoots a 22 in the fourth series and his total is 94 but he is in 19th position. One more series to go.

India beat Qatar in their first tie of the women’s team championship 3-0. Mouma Das first beat Maha Ali 11-3, 11-2, 11-4, before Ayhika Mukherjee needed four sets to get past Aia Mohamed 11-2, 10-12, 11-2, 11-3. Sutirtha Mukherjee then wrapped up the tie by defeating Maha Faramarzi 11-3, 11-3, 11-6.

India’s Anu Raghavan finishes third in her heat of the women’s 400m hurdles heats with 56.77 seconds and this means she directly qualifies for the final.

Oh, hang on...Jauna Murmu has also made it! The scorecard has been updated and shows that she was not disqualified. She makes the cut for the final as one of the two fastest losers. So India will have two finalists in the women’s 400m hurdles.

India finish fifth in their heat of the men’s TBR 500m with a time of 2:24.806. They will go into repechage.

India’s Jauna Murmu crosses the finish line in fourth position in her women’s 400m hurdles heats with a time of 59.20 seconds, but the final scorecard shows that she has been disqualified. Still not clear as to why she was disqualified. Will update you as we get the news.

8.50 am: The table tennis action has begun, with India’s women’s team first taking on Qatar in their group match.

The women’s 400m hurdles is also about to begin, with India’s Jauna Murmu and Anu Raghavan in the fray.

In the men’s skeet qualification, Sheeraz Sheikh scores 23/25 in the fourth series to take his total to 95/100, while Angad Vir Singh Bajwa has 94 points with a 22 in his fourth. One more series to go to decide the final lineup.

8.39 am: ICYMI, the upsets kept rolling out of the badminton courts as world champion Kento Momota crashed out on Saturday at the hands of Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting. The 21-year-old beat the Japanese world No 4 21-18, 21-18 and then collapsed on the court in disbelief.

“Thank God I could win today’s match and win against Momota,” the world No 12 told reporters, as quoted by AFP. “I was trying a new strategy with my coach and thankfully it worked. Nothing special, but was just more focused on today’s game.”

8.10 am: ICYMI, there was an invader on the athletics track on Saturday during the 100m hurdles heats. Pretty sure this guy would have aced the hurdles and won a gold had he been allowed to compete.

On day 2 of the women’s skeet qualification, India’s Rashmi Rathore has shot a 23/25 in the fourth series to take her total to 91/100. She currently is in ninth position and would definitely need more than 23 in the final round to make the cut for the final. Ganemat Sekhon could only manage a 22 in the fourth series, which takes her total to 90.


Good morning and welcome to The Field’s live blog for Day 8 of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.

On the second Sunday of the Games, India will be looking to add to the 29 medals won from the first week.

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal would look to end a long wait for a women’s singles medal for India at the Asiad, as they play their quarter-finals. Athletics will feature Hima Das and Muhammed Anas in the 400m finals, and they are favourites to finish on the podium.

In shooting, skeet events move into day two of qualification followed by the finals.

The table tennis team gets its campaign underway as well while the bridge teams, with medals already assured, would look for a place in the final.
