Kohli, Rahane shared a 159-run stand as India posted a total of 307/6 at the end of day one.

Kohli plays out a maiden from Stokes to end the day’s play. The sun is shining brightly, a far cry from how the conditions were earlier in the day. It has been all India since lunch. When you take 10 wickets in session, seldom do you lose a Test match. Hardik Pandya and Co’s efforts with the ball has rubbed off on the batsmen too. Rahul, Dhawan and Pujara looked more assured than ever before and they rubbed salt in England’s wounds.
Joe Root’s men need nothing short of a miracle with three whole days of play still yet to be played. The target is already out of reach. England were once again let down by their batting, a problem that the team management has been trying to grapple with since the 2013-’14 Ashes. As for India, it was one of those days where everything came together. Pujara should built on this start and get back to run-scoring ways. England’s bowlers in the second innings were restless and erratic. Clearly, there is only one team feeling the pressure. India will sleep easy, sloppy England have a lot to ponder.

The sun is out in Trent Bridge and there is no sign of Pujara shifting gears. Kohli is happy to rotate the strike. Anderson nearly gets the better of the India no 3, zipping one past his outside edge. Stokes did the same to Kohli with a bouncer in the previous over.

Pujara once again drops anchor and deals with Anderson with a great deal of respect. The England pacer tried to get Pujara to poke at the ball outside off stump but the batsman was happy to let it go through to the keeper.

India in no hurry to get their runs as Anderson and Stokes are back in the attack. Pujara is happy to knock the ball around and rotate the strike. Kohli is taking his time to acquaint himself at the crease.

Kohli is off the mark with a flick of his pads. Poor from England, doing precious little to put the Indian batsmen under pressure. Pujara keeps strike with a single.

Dhawan stepped out and Rashid, seeing this, pitches his googly a fraction wide and the opener is caught in no-man’s land. Bairstow whips off the bails.

Dhawan continues to punish anything drifted down the leg side. Woakes makes a rare error in length and the southpaw tucks it down to the fine-leg fence.

Woakes has put the brakes on the scoring somewhat in his last couple of overs. Both batsmen would have sensed that this is their opportunity to score big with the opposition on the mat.

DROPPED! That was a howler from Cook at slip. Woakes created the chance, snaring the edge from Dhawan’s blade and the chance goes begging. There is no end to England’s misery and the lead continues to swell.

England can’t seem to stem the tide of boundaries. Pujara welcomes Rashid with a late cut behind square. In the last ball of the over, he gets to the pitch of the ball and pounds it straight down the ground for another four. Yet again, a big over for India.

More wayward bowling from England and the boundaries keep on coming. Woakes goes horrendously wrong with his length, drifts it on leg stump and Dhawan flicks it behind square for a boundary. England get a much needed drinks break.

Pujara is in cruise control. Two full deliveries with no lateral swing from Stokes and it’s hammered down the ground with authority, almost as if he was playing in India.

Pujara gets off the mark with a trickle down to the fine leg boundary. Ideal situation for the India no 3 – desperately looking for runs – to come in and capitalise.

Cleaned him up. That swung late but importantly, that was full from Stokes and the ball clipped Rahul’s pads before crashing onto his middle stump. Rahul can be proud of his efforts in this Test.

Woakes has to contend with a couple of close leg-before shouts but they were drifting down the leg side. The runs keep on coming.

Stokes and Dhawan collide as the batsmen try to scamper through for a single. The players shake hands, something that is warmly appreciated by the crowd. Just when I was thinking that it was turning out to be a boundary-less over, Rahul gets an inside edge, beats Bairstow’s dive and trickles into the fence.

Woakes comes into the attack and he is welcomed with a full-blooded cut shot by Dhawan that narrowly beats Pope’s dive and races to the boundary. More positive intent from India.

More boundaries for Rahul. Yet again, Broad over-pitches and gets the treatment. Rahul delights with yet another gorgeous cover drive. Nine from the over and Root needs to do something quickly. The game is quickly slipping away from his team’s grasp.

England’s pacers are too full and restless and the Indians are making merry. Rahul drives one down the ground and then punches one through the covers for back-to-back boundaries. Lovely batting this from Rahul. The runs are coming thick and fast and the light is fading. Will the real Anderson and Broad please stand up?

Rahul is in fluent touch here. He continues to play Broad late and doesn’t miss out on an opportunity to cut and pull. The boundaries are flowing and India are piling on the lead.

Positive intent from the Indian openers, who are in no mood to get stuck at the crease as they did in the first innings. There have been a couple of half-chances for England so far. The lead, though, has now swelled to 186.

Anderson is on the money but Dhawan gets two boundaries – in the first and final delivery of the over. The pace spearhead is making the ball move both ways. This could be an interesting passage of play. Dhawan resisted the urge to drive outside off.

Kohli can finally breathe easy. Buttler once again tries to slog it out of the park. Bumrah this time deceives him with a slower delivery and Thakur from deep square-leg runs in and makes no mistake. It was nearly a no-ball but replays showed that Bumrah escaped by a few centimeters.

SIX! Buttler is not hanging back and gives a full one from Ishant the full tilt and the ball sails over the long-off fence. Yet again, Anderson gets to face the last ball of the over, he blocks a straight one from Ishant. Cheers from the crowd.

The hosts survive again and the tea break has been pushed. Anderson once again got a delivery to face, which he fended off with some discomfort. Bumrah tested him with a bouncer and Anderson’s defensive prod almost landed comfortably for short-leg.

Jimmy survives again. Ishant was the bowler. Buttler got three runs on this occasion and handed the no 11 one ball to face. The final ball of the over teased Anderson’s edge but he withdrew his bat on time.

Jimmy survives! Buttler and Anderson scamper for a single to keep strike. Four runs came of the over. No wicket in the Pandya over, something that didn’t happen before this over.

Buttler is in attack mode and brings up two boundaries and a six to finish the over. Shami, once again going full and straight was taken to the cleaners. The biggest cheer, though, went around the ground when Buttler got a two to help England avoid the follow-on.

Jagged back in and Broad doesn’t have a clue. That’s Pandya’s first five-wicket haul in any form of international cricket. That was plumb in front as Broad couldn’t get his bat down on time to a ball that swung back in late.

That’s Pandya best Test figures. The edges keep on giving and Pant keeps on catching them. The young wicketkeeper now has his fifth victim. Wonder what Michael Holding has to say about this collapse. Pandya is on a hat-trick.

Expensive over that for India as Shami leaks ten runs from it. Kohli won’t mind this as England are now throwing caution to the wind. Rashid gets a couple of boundary to get things under way, and so does Buttler.

More worries for England, who also lose a review. That was poor from Woakes. It was clear that that the ball had clipped the bat before going through to Pant, who takes a good reflex catch, one-handed. This time, it is the short ball that does the trick for Pandya, who can do no wrong this time. India in dreamland.

Another one goes. India and Pandya on a roll here as wickets tumble like nine pins at Trent Bridge. Once again, it’s the outswinger that does the trick for the India all-rounder. Another nick, another simple catch for Rahul, who has now picked up his third. Who said India are shoddy in the slip cordon?

Another one goes and England are in all sorts of trouble. Shami with a full length delivery into the left-hander gets a nick and Rahul takes another catch at slip. There was no controversy this time.

Fine over for England as two boundaries come of it. Pandya was too full and wide and got the treatment in the first and the last ball of the over.

Review lost for India! Pandya rapped Stokes on the pads, getting the ball to come back as the England all-rounder came down the track and missed. The soft signal was not out and the replays showed that Stokes came perilously close to making the long walk back. Ashwin is back on the field but doesn’t look very comfortable. Pandya, meanwhile, is getting lovely shape on the ball.

Stokes gets another boundary, this time on the leg side while deploying the flick. Shami, who looked good in the early part of his second spell, once again struggled for rhythm in this over.

Stokes wastes no time getting the scoreboard moving. He gets off the mark with a wild flash outside the off stump. Pandya then gives width and the ball is tucked away to the point boundary.

Controversy. Root got an edge and Rahul pouched it at second slip and raced away. Root stood his ground. There were multiple replays taken from the third umpire. Did Rahul get his fingers behind the ball? One would never clearly know. It was that tight. The England captain shakes his head and lets fly an expletive. Kohli is delighted and India are on top.

After an forgettable first spell, Shami makes a good comeback, hitting the deck hard and bringing the ball back from a good length. Root was struck on his gut at pace twice in the over.

Bumrah was a tad erratic compared to his earlier overs, drifting it onto the leg side one too many times. Now, Pujara has also gone off the field, in comes Shadul Thakur. If only one could walk into the Indian dressing room right now.
There is a team meeting in the Indian balcony as Ashwin limps off the field. Some worried faces there as the message is being relayed to head coach Ravi Shastri. It doesn’t look promising for India. Ashwin has now sitting on the substitutes bench. Will we see him bowl again?

Kohli has men patrolling Bairstow’s flick. One nearly carries to substitute Jadeja at square leg. The England wicketkeeper gets off the mark with an uppish drive on the leg side. Another fine over from Ishant.

Michael Atherton in the commentary draws a parallel with Bumrah and West Indies great Courtney Walsh. Once again, Root did not look comfortable against the sling arm of Bumrah, who beat him twice in the over. Once again, the England captain got a nick but was fortunate to survive as the ball fell in front of the slip cordon.

Another one goes and it’s a dream start for Pant in Test cricket. He now has three catches to his name. Pope tried to trickle the ball to the fine leg fence and could only glove it to the keeper. Stunned silence across the ground and England are in all sorts of bother.

Lovely stuff from Bumrah. Root nicked it but the ball died on Pant and rolled into the fence. Root was also well beaten from a jaffa that seamed back in a long way.

Root finally gets a move on by tucking away a lose delivery from Ishant to the fine leg boundary. He follows that up with a three, driving on the up but Pandya saves a run with a fine effort in the deep. Ishant, though, continues to pose questions to Pope.

Another maiden and Bumrah was on target, giving nothing away to Pope. He nearly cleaned up the England No 4 with a delivery that jagged back in from length. The ball, though, went just an inch over the bails. Terrific spell for the Indian bowlers, this.

Ishant is in the middle of an inspired spell here. There was a loud shout for a leg-before against Root but Kohli not to use the review. Earlier in the over, the India pacer got the ball to rush into the England captain, who nearly chopped on. Maiden over.

Two runs from the over and Pope gets into double figures. Bumrah went slightly short in this over, trying to angle it into the the batsman. There is a short mid-wicket in place too as Pope was slightly awkward trying to fend off the balls that shot in off length.
Not looking good for Cook. Some are speculating if this will be his last series.

Ishant continues to use the scrambled seam to bring the ball back into the batsman. Root plays out five dot balls after Pope played a solid drive down the ground to get three more runs.

Pope plays a gorgeous cover drive to get off the mark. Bumrah over-pitching on that occasion. The last ball sees him get an inside edge and the batsmen cross over for a single. Interesting passage of play this.

When they come, they do in droves. India are experiencing just that. That was not a vicious delivery by any means and Jennings gets a nick while trying to defend the ball off the backfoot. Poor shot and Bumrah gets his first wicket on the tour. Another catch for Pant. The Indians are cock-a-hoop.

Ishant delivers. Just two balls earlier, Pujara had spooned a regulation take at first slip. It doesn’t matter. For the second time in the over, Cook was invited into the drive and Pant takes his first catch in Test cricket.

Finally, Bumrah made the batsman poke outside off-stump. Once again, the length was on the shorter side and Jennings was happy to leave or play it off the back foot. Maiden over.

Cook leaned into a slightly wide delivery from Ishant and placed the ball to the point boundary to bring up England’s fifty. This is the first time they have reached the score without losing a wicket. Ishant bowled a better line than Shami and Bumrah, bringing Cook forward.

Lunch time, England trail by 283 runs
It has been England’s session for sure. Broad and Anderson wasted little time to knock India over, taking only 40 minutes to clean up India. There is nip on the wicket and good bowling can fetch you wickets, as the English pacers showed earlier in the day. India, unfortunately, have been all over the place with the ball. Their slip catching continues to be a problem. It’s not like England have fared any better in that department either.
Finally, Cook looks in good nick and Jennings got a reprieve. The cloud cover continues to hover over Trent Bridge. India need to revisit their strategy while coming out for the second session. See you on the other side of the break.

More runs for Cook, this time getting a boundary with a drive through mid-off. Bumrah, unlike Shami, continues to go full on off-stump. We are yet to see the ball moving around like it did for Broad and Anderson this morning.

Shami is struggling with his length, bowling short and wide to the left-handers and concedes a couple of boundaries in the vacant cover region. Cook nearly chopped on too. Lively start for both teams so far

Close! There was big shout for leg-before and the umpire turns it down? Was there a bat? Bumrah started the over bowling slightly short of a length but looked dangerous going slightly full. Jennings was ruffled.

Shami continues to struggle for rhythm, not something that we are not used to seeing. The final two balls of the over were angled into Jennings, who defends them with caution after being forced to play.

Reprieve! Bumrah’s first delivery hits Jennings high on his bat and the ball flies between third slip and gully and reaches the fence. There is movement and the Indian pacers have their tails up.

That was an all-action over which ended with Pant diving full length to his right and failing to collect the ball. Four byes. Cook’s first runs was a dab that fell in front of Kohli in the slip cordon and raced to the boundary.
The players are making their way to the middle. Cook and Jennings are taking guard. Shami will open the bowling.

Unplayable for a tail-ender. Given the conditions, India might not mind folding up this early. The ball pitched on middle, straightened at the last moment and clipped the top of middle-stump. Well, that was easy for England. They got the remaining four wickets in the day in space of 19 balls.

Another one goes. There’s no curbing Shami’s aggressive intent. Here again, he tries to club Anderson into the stands. The ball hits high on the bat and Broad at mid-wicket takes a safe catch.

What a ball from Broad. The ball jagged back into poor Ashwin from wide outside off stump, clipped his pads and uprooted the middle stick. Broad is on fire and that was an inswinger of the highest quality. This could be over very quickly.

Anderson is getting the ball to dart both ways. Yet again, he finds Ashwin’s edge but the ball falls in front of slips. Ishant is off the mark and India get three singles during the over.

Pant acquainted well at the crease during his gritty essay. There is a bit of a sending off too from Broad. There was movement away from the batsman after the ball pitched on a fuller length. Pant, reaching for the ball, got an inside edge and the ball clipped the stumps.
Stuart Broad had to go off the field, presumably to get a new pair of shoes.

Ashwin continues to play the ball late and gets another boundary to his name, cleverly dabbing it down to the third man fence. Root has packed the slip cordon with players. The over ends with another edge beating the slips and rolling into the boundary. Anderson has been hitting a short of a length so far. England’s frustration continues.

Two leg-byes to start the Broad over. The England pacer struggled with his length, spraying the ball down leg. Pant continues to search for runs on the leg side.

Just a single from the over. Pant continues to stand a foot in front of the popping crease. He attempted a pull off Anderson but the ball rushed onto him.

Ashwin gets off the mark with a cut that went through the slip cordon and to the boundary. The ball flew off the blade and past Buttler at second slip. Buttler ducked and the ball reached the boundary. Meanwhile, Pant got the first runs of the day with a single, dabbing the ball on the leg side. Broad is on target.
3:55 pm: The players on the field. Pant is taking strike. Broad will start proceedings. Ashwin is India’s No 8. He is at the non-striker’s end.

3:07 pm: It’s official! Day two will start at 11:15 am local time (3:45 pm IST). It’s a fifteen minute delay from the scheduled time. Would you believe it? Now, the sun is out in Trent Bridge.
3:05 pm: The latest reports coming in from Nottingham state that the drizzle and wind has stopped.
3:00 pm: The pitch is still covered and there is a hint of drizzle. The covers, meanwhile, are starting to come off.
2:58 pm: Ajinkya Rahane roared back to form with a fluent 81. Here’s the India vice captain talking about his knock on day one.
2:40 pm: There is still a drizzle around Nottingham and the covers are on. India won’t mind this one bit. Meanwhile, in the newsroom, there are murmurs of this being a reverse of what India experienced at Lord’s.
Once the rain clears, all eyes will be on Rishabh Pant and how he bats alongside the tail as India look to stretch their first innings total.
Virat Kohli’s dogged determination was well complemented by Ajinkya Rahane’s application as India put up their best batting performance of the series reaching 307 for 6 against England on the first day of the third cricket Test.
The Indian captain missed out on a well-deserved by a whisker as his 97 came off 152 balls while Rahane also looked good for a three figure before Alastair Cook’s reflex catch brought about his downfall at 81.
Together, the Indian skipper and his deputy added 159 runs for the fourth wicket to lay a solid foundation.
However, England kept the visitors in check with wickets at regular intervals to share the honours heading into day two.
