7:30 pm: Bajrang Punia wins India’s first gold medal of the Games
Bajrang took an early 6-0 lead before Takatani fought back to make it 6-2. Bajrang as always was very aggressive. Takatani took another two points to make it 6-4. The Japanese wrestler had another opportunity but Bajrang defended well and the score remained 6-4 till the end of the first period.
2nd period: Takatani managed to get through Bajrang’s defence early, grabbed the ankle and made it 6-6. Bajrang fought back to make it 8-6. A tight contest if there ever was one. Then, both wrestlers took two points during one move to make it 10-8. It went down to the final seconds and the Indian got another point when Japan’s review failed. It ended 11-8. What a contest!

HT and India have taken full advantage of the hosts. They lead 6-0.

Bajrang Punia’s gold medal bout is going to be coming up soon. He is taking on Japan’s Daichi Takatani. Bajrang had beaten Takatani in September last year to win the gold medal at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

India’s women are taking on Indonesia in their first match of the competition. This should be an easy win for the women in blue.
6:17 pm: Sajan finishes the 200m butterfly in fifth place. The pace was a bit too hard for him initially and it took him a while to recover from it. He was down in 6th place at one point but fought back to take 5th. Japan’s Seto was much too strong and took the gold easily in the end.
6:13 pm: Sushil Kumar is just as shocked by his defeat as the rest of India.
“I did not expect this. I did not have any big competition under my belt and that was the main reason for my defeat. But it’s part of sport. I will train harder and come back.”
6:11 pm: Kabaddi
And we have another easy win for India. They beat Bangladesh earlier in the day and were much too strong for Sri Lanka. Ajay Thakur and Monu Goyat guided India to a solid 44-28 win.
6:05 pm: Swimming
Sajan Prakash will be in action shortly in the 200m butterfly final. He was impressive in the qualifying and has qualified for the final as the third fastest swimmer.
5:57 pm: China are already dominating the event. They have won six gold medals already to take a commanding lead over Korea, Japan and the other nations.
China is expected to reach 3000 total medals at the Games in Jakarta-Palembang. It won 345 medals four years ago in Incheon.
5.48 pm: Swimming
Srihari Nataraj, 17, finishes seventh in the final. He was never really in a race that was dominated from start to finish by China’s Xi Jiayu (who equalled the Games record of 52.34) and Japan’s Irie Ryosuke. This is China’s fourth gold medal from the pool today. A clean sweep so far.
5.43 pm: Swimming
Sun Yang (CHN) won the Men’s 200m freestyle to claim his sixth gold medal at the Asian Games. The record number of Asian Games gold medals by male swimmers is seven, held by Japanese swimmers Kosuke Kitajima, Takashi Yamamoto and Kunihiro Iwasaki..
SUN has now also won a gold medal in five different swimming events at the Asian Games, equalling the record held by five different swimmers: Yoshimi Nishigawa (JPN), Xu Yanwei (CHN), Kunihiro Iwasaki (JPN), Shen Jianqiang (CHN) and Tsuyoshi Yanagidate (JPN).

Pawan Kumar is through to the bronze medal playoff after beating Indonesia’s Fahriansyah by technical superiority in the repechage round 2. He took a 11-0 lead before being awarded the match.

Pawan Kumar is now into the repechage round, which means he has a shot at a bronze medal, as Iran’s Hassan Yazdani reaches the final with another dominating win.

India have lost their Pool B match against Korea 0-3. The Indians were no match for the Koreans.

Bajrang Punia is through to the final and will contest for gold after beating Mongolia’s Batchuluun Batmagnai by technical superiority in the semi-finals.
However, Sandeep Tomar is out of contention for a medal via repechage after his conqueror Reza Atrinagharchi lost in the semi-finals.

India have lost their 3rd match in the group stage – 21-26 against China this time.
3.50 pm: Men’s Freestyle 86 kg – Wrestling
Pawan Kumar is no match for world champion Hassan Yazdanicharati as the Iranian wins the bout by technical superiority in the first period itself. Pawan still has a chance to win bronze via repechage if Hassan reaches the final.
3.40 pm: Men’s Freestyle 97 kg – Wrestling
India’s Mausam Khatri also loses his quarter-final match, to Uzbekistan’s Ibragimov Magomed by a 0-8 scoreline.
3.35 pm: Sushil Kumar is officially out of the Asian Games as his conqueror Adam Batirov has just lost his quarter-final match. This means Sushil cannot contest for bronze via repechage.

Bajrang Punia secures himself a medal by reaching the semi-finals of the 65 kg category, beating Tajikistan’s Fayziev Abdulqosim via technical superiority, after taking a 12-2 lead.
2.45 pm: Men’s Freestyle 57 kg and 86 kg – Wrestling
Sandeep Tomar fails to secure a medal as he loses his quarter-final match against Iran’s Reza Atrinagharchi 9-15. The two wrestlers were tied at 6-6 at the end of the first period, but Reza was brilliant in his defence. Sandeep tried to be aggressive but Reza was able to get back at him via a strong defence and counter-attack, eventually winning the match by six points.
Pawan Kumar, competing in the 86 kg category, however had it easy against Cambodia’s Heng Vuthy, winning the match by fall after leading 8-0 in the first period.
2.30 pm: Mixed doubles tennis
India win their first Asian Games tennis match as Divij Sharan and Karman Kaur Thandi beat Philippines’s Alberto Jr Lim & Marian Jade Capadocia 6-4, 6-4 in mixed doubles.
2.08 pm: Men’s team badminton
Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and Sai Praneeth give India an easy 3-0 win against Maldives in the first round of the men’s team competition. However, the matches were not shown live on TV, nor are the scores reflecting on the Asian Games website. We will update the scores as and when we find them!
2 pm: Women’s Team Regu – Sepaktakraw
India lose 0-3 to Korea.
1.30 pm: Men’s Freestyle 65 kg Wrestling
Bajrang Punia is through to the quarter-finals in his category after beating Uzbekistan’s Sirojiddin 13-3 on technical superiority.
1.25 pm: Men’s kabaddi
The Indian men’s kabaddi team join the women in recording a huge opening win, beating Bangladesh 50-21 in their first group match.
1.10 pm: Men’s Freestyle 57 kg – Wrestling
Sandeep Tomar has a tough fight against Turkmenistan’s Rustem Nazarov before coming through a 12-8 winner. Sandeep will face Iran’s Reza Atrinagharchi in the quarter-finals. In the 57kg category, by the way, the world champion Yuki Takashi has been eliminated.
12.45 pm: Men’s Freestyle 74 kg – Wrestling
Huge upset in the wrestling arena as Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar fails to get past the qualification round! Bahrain’s Adam Batirov puts on a strong defensive show to beat him 5-3.
Sushil scored the first two points of the match by a takedown, before his opponent was awarded one point for receiving a head slap from the Indian. The first period ended 2-1 in favour of the Indian.
In the second period, Sushil tried to score more takedowns but the Bahraini was quite strong in his defennce and ended up winning two points twice to take the lead. Batirov maintained his composure till the end, to send Sushil crashing out.
12.25 pm: Men’s Trap qualification – Shooting
Manavjit Singh Sandhu finishes Day 1 of qualification on top of the pile with a total score of 72 out of 75. He scored 24 out of 25 in the third round. His compatriot Lakshay Sheraon made up for an average first round (22) with scores of 25 and 24 in the next two to end up with 71, which took him to fifth spot.
12.15 pm: Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar have just received their medals. India’s account is open at the 2018 Asian Games!
12.03 pm: Chinese Taipei’s Yingshin Lin and Shaochuan Lu win the gold in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final with a total score of 494.1, beating China who scored 492.5. This is the first time that the mixed team event is featuring at the Asian Games.
11.55 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar win the bronze after ending with a score of 429.9. This is India’s first medal of the 2018 Asian Games! Chinese Taipei and China will contest for gold.
11.52 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
The Korean pair is the next one to be eliminated. We’re now left with the three pairs who will stand on the podium. The order will now be decided. India are third right now, but with the same points as China.
11.48 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
The Mongolian pair is the first to be eliminated. Four pairs left.
11.45 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
India are still second after the first 30 shots, which ends the first stage of the final. Now, we enter the elimination stage.
11.41 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
India maintain their second position after 20 shots. The Chinese Taipei pair ahead of them have a slender lead. Ten more shots before we move into the elimination stage.
11.37 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Final
India are in second position after the first 10 shots in the final. After all teams have taken 30 shots, we will enter the elimination stage.
11.30 am: The 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team final is about to begin, with Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar among five finalists.
11.08 am: Women’s trap qualification – Shooting
Shreyasi Singh shoots a perfect score of 25 in the third round of qualification to rise up to second in the table with a total of 71 out of 75, while Seema Tomar scores 24 in the third round to also reach a total of 71, but stands fourth overall. Kazakhstan’s Mariya Dmitriyenko tops the table after Day 1, missing only one target out of 75 across three rounds. The final two rounds of qualification will take place on Monday.
10.45 am: Men’s Lightweight Four – Rowing
India’s Bhopal Singh, Jagvir Singh, Tejas Shinde and Pranay Naukarkar finish second in their heat, which means they depend on repechage results.
10.25 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team
India’s Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma miss out on a spot in the final after finishing sixth in qualification with a total score of 759. Kazakhstan also finish with the same score but secure the fifth and final spot after doing better than India in the inner 10s. Tough break for India.
10.15 am: Shooting qualification
Seema Tomar scores 23 out of 25 in the second round of the women’s trap qualification to drop down to fifth, while Shreyasi Singh improves on her 22 in the first round with 24 in the second, which brings her into the top 10.
In the men’s trap qualification, Manavjit Singh Sandhu scored a 23 in the second round to drop to third.
Meanwhile, in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma score 94 and 95 respectively in the first of four rounds of qualification.
10.07 am: China win the first gold medal of the 2018 Asian Games – via Peiyuan Sun in Wushu. Sun, 28, scored 9.75 to win the men’s changquan category of the Chinese martial art, denying hosts Indonesia the Games’ opening title as he edged Edgar Xavier Marvelo into second place.
China had also claimed the first gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, by winning the women’s team 10m air pistol event.
10.05 am: Women’s Basketball 5x5
The Indian women’s basketball team loses its first group match against Chinese Taipei 84-61. India were very good in the first half, but then completely fell apart in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw a better fight but it was nowhere near enough.
10 am: Women’s doubles sculls – Rowing
Sayali Shelake and Pooja finished sixth and last in the only heat, but all the teams progress to the finals because of the lack of enough participants.
9.50 am: Women’s Basketball 5x5
The Indian team completely disintegrates in the third quarter, as Chinese Taipei open up a huge gap of 64-45. The Indians just look like they’ve run out of gas, which is quite unfortunate after how they played in the first half.
9.35 am: Men’s and Women’s Pair – Rowing
All six teams of the only heat in this event have made it to the final, including India’s Malkeet Singh and Gurinder Singh, who recorded a time of 7:37.20. The Indian women’s pair of Sanjukta Dung Dung and Harpreet Kaur, however, have to depend on repechage as there are two heats. Their timing of 9:02.88 is the slowest of the nine teams.
9.25 am: Men’s 200m Butterfly
India’s Sajan Prakash is through to the final after a terrific swim! Sajan was leading after the first 50m before Japan’s Nao Horomura and Chinese Taipei’s Kuanhung Wang overtook him after 150m. However, Sajan dug into his tank and made a burst for it in the final 50m, eventually securing second place in his heat, with a timing of 1:58.12.
Horomura won the heat with 1:58.06. His compatriot Daiya Seto had the overall best time from all heats, with 1:57.23. Sajan’s time was the third-best overall. Sajan’s feat is even more incredible considering this is a new event for him. He did not have a qualification time ahead of this heat.
8.53 am: Women’s Basketball 5x5
Chinese Taipei stretch their lead over India to five points at the end of the first half. The score is 33-28 to Chinese Taipei.
9.05 am: Men’s Double Sculls - Rowing
India’s Om Prakash and Sawarn Singh are through to the final after recording a time of 7:10.26 in their heat.
8.58 am: Men’s 100m Backstroke Swimming
India’s Srihari Nataraj just about qualifies for the final. The seven other finalists all have better times than him in the heats, so it’s going to take a herculean effort in the final if the Indian wants to end up on the podium. The final will start at 4.55 pm IST.
8.53 am: Women’s Basketball 5x5
The Indian team has performed really well in the first quarter, trailing Chinese Taipei by just one point at the end of it. Chinese Taipei lead 18-17 after the first quarter.
8.45 am: Men’s 100m Backstroke Swimming
India secure a 1-2 finish in the first heat, with Srihari Nataraj and Arvind Mani. Srihari won the heat with 55.86, while Arvind recorded 58.09. They still have to wait for other heats to finish before they find out if they have qualified for the final, but Srihari has a chance with his timing.
8.35 am: Men’s Changquan Final - Wushu
India’s Anjul Namdeo finishes fifth in the final with 9.66. The bronze medal was taken by Chinese Taipei’s Tsemin Tsai with a score of 9.70. India’s Suraj Singh Mayanglabam finishes 10th with 9.51.
8.28 am: 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Shooting
India’s Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar finish second in qualification with a total score of 835.3. Chandela faltered in the third round, shooting just a 101.8, which brought her total score down. She finished with 415.3, while Ravi scored 420. Korea finished on top with a total score of 836.7.
8.24 am: Men’s single sculls rowing
India’s Dattu Baban Bhokanal finishes second in his heat, with a time of 8:09.21. Japan’s Ryuta Arakawa wins the heat with 7:56.08 to progress to the final. Bhokanal and others will now have to rely on repechage.
8.18 am: Men’s Trap qualification
India’s Manavjit Singh Sandhu does well in the first of five rounds of qualification, shooting all 25 targets. He is tied in first position along with Lebanon’s Alain Moussa.
8.15 am: Women’s kabaddi
Japan’s misery comes to an end as the match ends 43-12 in favour of India. This was, as expected, a total domination. Apart from the first few minutes of the match, Japan were nowhere close to India. The Japanese defence had started the match well, winning a few tackle points, but could not sustain themselves. Their raiders were toothless in comparison.
8.05 am: Men’s 200m Freestyle Swimming
India’s Saurabh Sangvekar comes second out of three swimmers in his heat, with a time of 1:54.87. The winner of the heat, Kazakhstan’s Adil Kaskabay, finished with 1:53.37.
7.50 am: Women’s kabaddi
India inflict the first all-out of the match on the Japanese before the first half ends 19-8 in favour of the defending champions. Japan, whose defence had started strongly, seems to have thrown in the towel. The Indian women are now comfortably cruising in this match, their raids proving too strong for the Japanese.
7.40 am: Women’s kabaddi
India take a time-out just under nine minutes into the first half, leading 8-6 against Japan. The defending champions started off well, racing to a 4-0 lead before the Japanese defence switched on and started winning their team some tackle points. The Japanese haven’t been very good in their raids so far but their defence has been really alert apart from the opening couple of minutes.
7.30 am: Women’s kabaddi
The group A match between India and Japan has begun.
7.20 am: Women’s Trap Qualification
The first round is over, with Seema Tomar in tied first position along with Lebanon’s Ray Bassil and Japan’s Yukie Nakayama, all of whom scored 24 out of 25. Shreyasi Singh is in 13th position with a 22. Four more rounds to go in the qualies.
7.05 am: Women’s Trap Qualification
Seema Tomar gets off to a good start in round 1 of the trap shooting qualies. She shoots a 24 out of 25, while Shreyasi Singh is two shots off with a 22.
During the qualification round, every athlete has to shoot 125 targets, divided in five rounds of 25 targets each. The top six athletes from the qualification phase advance to the final round, where they can shoot at up to 50 targets.

There’s plenty of action scheduled for Sunday so hope you’ve got the day off!
India’s action on Sunday begins with shooting, with the 10m Air Rifle and 10m Air Pistol mixed team events providing two medal opportunities for Manu Bhaker, Abhishek Verma and Co.
India’s wrestlers will also take the mat later in the day, with all eyes on veteran Sushil Kumar, who is competing the 74kg Freestyle category. The wrestlers are in action in five categories with Bajrang Punia, Sandeep Tomar. Pawan Kumar and Mausam Khatri completing the line-up.
