Hockey, FIH Pro League: Indian men’s team get ready to fine-tune Paris squad in Europe leg
That’s it from us tonight! Do join us on Saturday as the Indian men’s and women’s teams face Belgium again.
FT, India 1-4 Belgium: Hendrickx steps up and sends Sreejesh the wrong way to wrap up a clinical 4-1 win for the home side! A nice win for the Olympic champions to bounce back from the shock loss to Ireland last night.
Q4, India 1-3 Belgium: Charlier has the ball in the back of the net but the umpire had already blown for a penalty stroke! Charlier not happy with the call. He had taken down the high pass despite interference from Abhishek. There is review from India but the on-field call stays.
Q4, India 1-3 Belgium: India pull one back! Nice vision from Jugraj Singh to spot Abhishek free on the edge of the circle. It’s all Abhishek after that. He jinxes past his marker and another defender with silky hands before unleashing a low drive which squeezes in between Van Doren and the post.
Q4, India 0-3 Belgium: What a pass from Denayer and what a goal from Cedric Charlier! The Belgian captain spots Charlier in acres of space on the right and hammers in a pass from the halfway line on the opposite wing. The ball evades a lunging Jugraj Singh and reaches Charlier. The Belgian cuts inside and fires the ball into the bottom corner with Sreejesh barely getting any time to react.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: Outrageous pass from Hardik Singh. Spots the tiniest gap and hits a cross-field high ball which bisects two Belgian defenders and reaches Sumit. However, the Indian right back cannot find a way past his markers.
End of Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Dohmen comes close to making it 3-0 right at the end of the quarter only for Jarmanpreet Singh to shepherd the ball off the line.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Less than a minute later, Abhishek fails to trap a regulation high ball and looks at his stick in disbelief. An unlucky spell of play for the young forward who has looked in good touch tonight.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: India manage to escape the high Belgian press as Manpreet Singh sprints down the right channel. He spots Abhishek’s run and plays the pass but the latter loses his footing as he approached the ball and fell causing the attack to end.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Van Doren comes up with a good save once again to deny India. Vivek Sagar Prasad’s quick slap shot was touched on towards goal by Lalit Kumar Upadhyay. Van Doren got his positioning correct to put the ball behind.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Belgium double their advantage! Nicolas de Kerpel wins Belgium’s first PC of the match. Alexander Hendrickx goes straight and along the turf as the ball shoots from between Sreejesh’s legs before the Indian custodian can close them.
Q3, India 0-1 Belgium: India have come out with a lot of intensity as harry their opponents off the ball on multiple occasions with Rohidas even getting into a spat with a Belgian player. The hosts manage to stay ahead.
Q3, India 0-1 Belgium: India get us underway in the third quarter. It has been a tight game so far and India can still come away with three points tonight.
HT, India 0-1 Belgium: With the lead in hand, Belgium are happy to step back and hand India possession while looking to hit on the counter. The hooter goes off and Belgium go into the break with a well-deserved lead. If not for Van Doren’s triple save, it could have been India who would have led 1-0 at halftime.
Q2, India 0-1 Belgium: The hosts take the lead! After coming close a fair few times before, luck finally is in Belgium’s favour. Tobias Biekens shot at goal but his shot was deflected up in the air of an Indian stick. Sreejesh rushed out to pad it away but Van Aubel got to the ball first and played it off Sreejesh to Felix Denayer. The Belgian captain, standing at the near post, had the simplest of tap ins.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: India win another PC but Harmanpreet’s drag flick is dangerous and Belgium get the free hit which they take quickly. The ball goes out to the corner where a Belgian player fires in a low cross into the circle. Cosyns slides in but can only direct the ball to the outside of the goal.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: Stunning goalkeeping from Loic van Doren in the Belgian goal! Shamsher Singh won India the first PC of the match. Van Doren saved Harmanpreet Singh’s drag flick before preventing Sukhjeet from scoring with a save at point-blank range. He then scampers to palm away Abhishek’s shot. Superb keeping and the crowd loves it.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: India have possession for the first minute or so before Belgium take over and start probing the Indian defence. No dice as India keep their opponents at an arm’s length.
End of Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: A frenzied first quarter comes to an end with Belgium doing the bulk of the attacking with India just about hanging on. PR Sreejesh was not a happy man towards the end of the quarter and you can expect the Indian backline to get more than an earful from the Indian custodian.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Cosyns misses once again! Superb one-touch hockey from Belgium as they open up the Indian defence from deep. Cosyns makes the run unmarked at the far post but still has to put in a dive to get to the ball and doesn’t get the requisite touch to put the ball beyond PR Sreejesh.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Amit Rohidas gives the ball away cheaply and Belgium counter. Victor Wegnez plays the ball to Cosyns who finds himself with not a lot of the goal to aim for and smacks the side of the goal.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Quick passes from Belgium and John-John Dohmen finds Tanguy Cosyns. The Belgian shoots from an acute angle and the ball cannons back off the post. The home fans thought it was goal judging. Florent van Aubel was also close but could not deflect the ball into goal.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Belgium start strongly and lay siege to the Indian goal. Nelson Onana has the first crack at goal but Amit Rohidas is at hand to deflect it high and wide off the goal.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: The last time these two sides met, India came away with a superb 5-1 win. How Craig Fulton would love a repeat of that! Belgium get us underway.
India vs Belgium, Craig Fulton: Belgium are Olympic champions and it is a good opportunity for us to play them in Antwerp. They are in our pool in the Olympics so good to play them.
India vs Belgium: And we’re back for the Indian men’s team match against Belgium. It’s a clash between third-placed Indian and eighth-placed Belgium. The hosts come into the match on the back of a shock 1-2 loss to Ireland yesterday. Expect it to be an exciting match.
FT, India 0-2 Belgium: The men’s teams will be up next in Antwerp. We’ll be back after a short break.
FT, India 0-2 Belgium: Belgium put pressure on the Indian defence and try and come up with the third goal but they run out of time. Nonetheless, they will celebrate a clinical 2-0 win over India.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: Deepika goes solo in attack and nearly pulls off an amazing goal but for Lucie Breyne to steal the ball with a well-timed tackle.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: The hosts win a PC. Savita makes an easy save to deny Vanden Borre.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: With a two-goal cushion, Belgium are happy to sit back and let India have possession while they defend with a low block.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: Aisling D’hooghe in the Belgium goal hasn’t been really tested today but she comes up with two good saves to deny India. Deepika Soreng shoots from the edge of the circle with D’hooghe saving it. Sangita hits the rebound with the Belgian keeper keeping it out and clearning the ball away.
Q4, India 0-2 Belgium: The hosts get us started. Can India score twice to earn a draw?
End of Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Two goals early in the quarter has taken the sting out of India. They barely threatened until the late PC.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Deepika goes for the bottom right from the PC. The first rusher gets a touch on the ball with her stick. Sangita looks to put the loose ball in the goal but is denied by Vanden Borre on the post. India review again for a PC but are unsuccessful this time.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: With the clock winding down on the quarter, Navneet and Sangita Kumari combine well down the left before the latter shoots. The ball loops up high with the umpire giving a free hit to Belgium. India review and win a PC as the ball came off the Belgian defender.
Q3, India 0-2 Belgium: Two quick goals for the hosts! India lose possession outside their 23m line and Belgium punish them once again. Louise Dewaet fires in a rising shot past a diving Savita, who I think wasn’t expecting Dewaet to go high. India rocked back by two quick-fire goals.
Q3, India 0-1 Belgium: The Belgians open the scoring! The hosts began by pressing India high and they get their reward for it. Ambre Ballenghein’s shot is saved by Savita but Alexia 't Serstevens is at hand to tap in the loose ball into goal.
Q3, India 0-0 Belgium: The hosts get us underway as the shadows cast by the sun get longer and longer.
HT, India 0-0 Belgium, Harendra Singh: We are playing simple hockey. I am happy with the way we are rotating the ball. If we keep up the energy in the next 30 minutes, I believe we can get the win.
HT, India 0-0 Belgium: Not much to write about in that half. Belgium, as expected, had bulk of the possession but weren’t able to do anything with it. I’d think India will be the happier of the two sides given how organised they were in defence and were able to threaten a couple of times on the counter.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: India have been very organised in defence so far. Despite being a player down, they barely allowed the Belgians any opening. Navneet Kaur’s suspension ends and India are back to 11 players.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: Salima Tete plays a nice pass into the circle. However, there are no Indian players at the back post to attack the ball and the chance goes begging.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: Belgium use their referral once again to try and win another PC. The visuals are blurry and therefore the TV umpire cannot offer any advice. No PC for the hosts.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: A very poor challenge from Navneet Kaur on the Belgian captain Alix Gerniers. That earns her a yellow card and India will be down to 10 players for five minutes.
Q2, India 0-0 Belgium: The hosts will be without Astrid Bonami who limps away injured before the start of the second quarter.
End of Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: A decent quarter of hockey comes to an end. Belgium had bulk of possession but did not really trouble Savita in the Indian goal.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Belgium use their review to win their first PC. Stéphanie Vanden Borre aims for the bottom left corner but her drag flick is too close to Savita Punia who makes a routine save for a goalkeeper of her quality.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Deepika Soreng barges into a Belgian player to win back possession and gets a green card for her trouble. With just over two minutes left, India down to 10 players.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: A sustained spell of possession for Belgium. India are defending solidly and not letting the hosts enter the shooting circle. Lovely moves from Sunelita Toppo who hoodwinks her marker and finds Katariya. However, the veteran forward loses the ball and the attack ends.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: No Deepika for the PC so the injection goes to Navneet whose shot hits the foot of the first rusher for another PC. The injection is not trapped cleanly and Belgium spring the counter. However, they err with the final pass and India survive.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: Lovely stick work from Navneet Kaur as she makes her way inside the circle. She catches a Belgian foot but just outside the circle. Vandana Katariya, however, is successful in drawing a foul in the circle and win the first penalty corner of the match for India.
Q1, India 0-0 Belgium: India get us started but it is Belgium who mount the first attack. However, Alexia 't Serstevens cannot hit the target.
Q1, India vs Belgium: Dan Strange on the comms informs us that Savita was taken to the hospital yesterday after falling sick. The three-time reigning FIH women’s Goalkeeper of the Year is back in the side today and starting.
India vs Belgium, Harendra Singh: I’d like to see us start with high energy intensity. They have learnt a lot from the world No 2 team (Argentina).
