Before the IPL season gets underway for 2023, there have been some changes in the squads due to injuries. The superstars who will be missing in action are Jasprit Bumrah for Mumbai Indians and Rishabh Pant for Delhi Capitals, and the franchises have named their replacements.

Here’s a list of changes that have been confirmed by the league.

Kedhar Jadhav replaces David Willey

Royal Challengers Bangalore named Kedar Jadhav as replacement for David Willey for the remainder of the season.

Jadhav, who made his IPL debut in 2010, has so far played 93 IPL games and has 1196 runs against his name. The right-handed batter, who has previously represented RCB in 17 matches, was brought on board for INR 1 Crore.

Priyam Garg replaces Kamlesh Nagarkoti

Delhi Capitals fast bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti is ruled out of the remainder of TATA IPL 2023 after sustaining a lower back stress fracture.

Uttar Pradesh batter Priyam Garg has been named as Nagarkoti’s replacement and DC have signed him for his base price of Rs 20 lakh. The attacking batter was first picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2020 and featured in 21 IPL games for SRH across three seasons.

Parnell joins RCB in place of Topley

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday, April 7, announced that South African all-rounder Wayne Parnell will be replacing the injured English pacer Reece Topley for the rest of the season.

Topley picked up a shoulder injury in RCB’s season opener against Mumbai Indians while fielding.

Additionally, Rajat Patidar has been ruled out of the squad after failing to recover from a heel injury that kept him out of the squad for the first two matches. He will be replaced by Vyshak Vijaykumar.

“Parnell has so far represented South Africa in 56 T20Is, in addition to 6 Tests and 73 ODIs, and has 59 T20I wickets against his name. The left-arm pacer has played 26 IPL matches and has as IPL many wickets. He joins RCB for INR 75 Lakh,” read a statement issued by the IPL.

“Patidar’s replacement Vyashak Vijay Kumar represents Karnataka in domestic cricket and has played 14 T20s, scalping 22 wickets and joins RCB for INR 20 Lakh.”

Shanaka replaces Williamson

After all the pre-season injury updates, the opening day of the tournament witnessed an unfortunate on-field incident that ended up ruling Kane Williamson out of the tournament.

Gujarat Titans named Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for Williamson after the Black Caps captain suffered an on-field injury to his right leg while attempting a catch at the boundary in the tournament opener against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain is an explosive middle-order batter who also bowls right-arm seam. Shanaka was on fire in the recent T20I series in India, smashing 124 runs in three innings at a S/R of 187 while averaging 62.00. He was also Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in the subsequent ODI series, scoring 121 runs in three innings.

Signed for his base price of Rs 50 lakh, this will be Shanaka’s maiden season in the IPL. He was unsold in the auction.

Riley Meredith joins MI

Mumbai Indians on Thursday named Riley Meredith as a replacement for injured fast bowler Jhye Richardson. Richardson is suffering from a hamstring injury and is ruled out of the 16th edition.

His replacement, Australian fast bowler, Riley Meredith has played 5 T20Is picking up 8 wickets that includes a three-wicket haul. He has represented the Punjab Kings & Mumbai Indians in the previous editions of the IPL. He joins MI for Rs 1.5 Crore.

KKR bring in Jason Roy

Kolkata Knight Riders signed England’s Jason Roy for Rs 2.8 crore for the TATA IPL 2023 from his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.

Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the tournament while Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has confirmed his unavailability for the season.

Roy, who earlier featured in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, last played in the 2021 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In 2021, he played five games, scoring 150 runs, including a half-century. The 32-year-old has played 64 T20Is for England, scoring 1522 runs at a S/R of 137.61 with 8 fifties.

Porel in for Pant

DC announced Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel as replacement for Rishabh Pant for IPL 2023.

20-year-old Porel has played 16 first-class, 3 List A and 3 T20 matches in his career so far. He has 695 runs to his name, at an average of 30.21, and has effected 58 catches and 8 stumpings in first-class cricket. Porel also notched half-centuries in the semi-final and final of the Ranji Trophy earlier this year. It was reported that he was trialling with DC already as they looked for a back-up wicketkeeper.

With Pant undergoing recovery from his accident, Delhi Capitals recently had confirmed that David Warner will be the captain for IPL 2023.

Warrier for Bumrah

Sandeep Warrier will replace Jasprit Bumrah at Mumbai Indians.

Warrier, who has played for India, has thus far played 68 T20s and scalped 62 wickets. He was previously a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, having played 5 IPL games. While Porel joins DC for Rs 20 Lakh, MI have brought Sandeep Warrier on board for Rs 50 Lakh.

Bumrah has been suffering from a back issue and is reported to have had his surgery.

Bairstow out for PBKS

Punjab Kings have signed uncapped Australian all-rounder Matthew Short as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow. The England wicket-keeper batter is ruled out of IPL 2023 as he is yet to fully recover from an injury he sustained in September.

This will be Short’s maiden IPL season. The opening batter, uncapped yet for Australia, was adjudged the Player of the Tournament in the recent edition of the Big Bash League for scoring 458 runs and taking 11 wickets with his off-spin. Short has been signed for his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

RCB signed New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell as a replacement for England batter Will Jacks,

Will Jacks, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury, was bought by the franchise for INR 3.2 Crore. His replacement, Bracewell, has played 16 T20Is, scored 113 runs and picked up 21 wickets. He will join RCB at his base price of INR 1 Crore.

Magala in for CSK

Chennai Super Kings signed South Africa pacer Sisanda Magala as a replacement for New Zealand bowler Kyle Jamieson for the season. Jamieson, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury, was bought by the franchise for INR 1 Crore.

His replacement, Magala, has rich experience in the shortest format of the game. Though he has played just 4 T20Is for South Africa, Magala has a reputation of being a regular wicket-taker in domestic T20 games over the years. He will join CSK at his base price of INR 50 Lakh.

Prasidh out for the season

India pacer Prasidh Krishna, who has suffered a lumbar stress fracture had been advised surgery which will meant he needed more time to recover and get back to competitive cricket. The franchise confirmed in a statement that they should be able to review and make a decision on Prasidh’s replacement for the season in due time.

Update: The IPL confirmed Sandeep Sharma will represent Rajasthan Royals this season after being signed as a replacement for Prasidh Krishna. Picked for his base price of Rs 50 lakh, Sandeep is one of the most senior bowlers in the tournament with over 100 wickets and 10 seasons of experience under his belt.

Nitish Rana to lead KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of lyer, who is recovering from a back injury.

The franchise said in a statement, “While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job.”

Update: The league confirmed that Iyer is ruled out for the season as mentioned above.

CSK pacer Mukesh Choudhary ruled out

Chennai Super Kings on Thursday named Akash Singh as a replacement for injured Mukesh Choudhary.

Mukesh, who made his IPL debut last season and scalped 16 wickets, is recovering from a stress fracture and hence, is sidelined from the 16th edition of the IPL.

Akash Singh, who was a part of India’s Under-19 World Cup team in 2020, previously played for Rajasthan Royals. The left-arm pacer has thus far played 9 T20s in addition to 9 List A matches and five First-Class games and has 31 wickets against his name. He will join CSK for INR 20 Lakh.

Patidar out

RCB’s Rajat Patidar was on Tuesday ruled out of the tournament due to an Achilles Heel injury. It is not confirmed yet who will replace him in the squad.

Raj Bawa out for PBKS

Punjab Kings have brought in Gurnoor Sing Brar for Rs 20 lakhs as a replacement for injured Raj Angad Bawa.

Bawa who played two games for PBKS last season, has been ruled out due to a left shoulder injury.

A left-handed batting all-rounder, Gurnoor made his first-class debut for Punjab in December 2022. He has featured in 5 first class matches and scored 107 runs at a S/R of 120.22 and picked up 7 wickets at an economy of 3.80.
