The Indian Premier League 2022 was meant to give a fresh new look to the tournament with the addition of two new teams. A look at the points table shows that it was, in fact, a season of change.
One of the new franchises, Gujarat Titans dominated the league phase to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs while the other new franchise, Lucknow Super Giants got there next.
The biggest change of them all is, perhaps, the transition that the most successful teams in the history of the league – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – became the first two be knocked out of the playoffs race. KKR, two-time champions, followed suit.
After all teams have played 13 matches, Titans sat on top with 20 points and an assured place in Qualifier 1 (guaranteed top-two finish). With their 14th match of the league phase, Lucknow Super Giants became the second team to qualify for playoffs. They were followed by RR, who moved into 2nd spot with their win, while MI knocked DC out and took RCB to the playoffs.
The top four was confirmed with one match to go in the league phase.
Here’s a look at how the points table is and what the remaining matches are (will be updated daily till spots are confirmed):

Gujarat Titans (Q)
If you’ve seen Ashish Nehra’s picture nonchalantly drinking coconut water in the ground, that’s the exact situation GT find themselves in. Relaxed and chilled out. They’ve qualified and will stay on top of the table and definitely play in Qualifier 1. What a first season for Hardik Pandya and Co.
Lucknow Super Giants (Q)
LSG became the second to reach playoffs with their thrilling win against KKR. If RR fail to defeat CSK, KL Rahul and Co will play Qualifier 1 against GT. Otherwise, it’s a third-place finish for them. No Net Run Rate equation involved there.
Rajasthan Royals (Q)
During the match against CSK, RR ensured their NRR won’t go below RCB’s. And with a win, they ensured a top two finish and a spot in the qualifier 1.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (Q)
Virat Kohli’s brilliant innings took RCB to a win over GT and then it came down to whether MI could do them a favour... and Tim David, a former RCB player, stepped in the run-chase to knock DC out.
Delhi Capitals (Eliminated)
DC’s equation was simple. Win their final match against MI, and they would have gone tthrough because their NRR is brilliant. But they came up with a sloppy performance on a few counts to bow out.
Kolkata Knight Riders (Eliminated)
First team to be knocked out: 5-time champions MI
Second team to be knocked out: 4-time champions CSK
Third team to be knocked out: 2-time champions KKR
Punjab Kings (Eliminated)
Remaining match: SRH (Wankhede Stadium)
RCB’s win against GT eliminated PBKS.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (Eliminated)
Remaining match: PBKS (Wankhede Stadium)
RCB’s win against GT eliminated SRH.
Chennai Super Kings (Eliminated)
The second team to be eliminated in the tournament.
Mumbai Indians (Eliminated)
A horror season for them as they were the first team to be knocked out but MI still ended up having a telling say on who finished in the the top four.
