Nice buy for Delhi. They have got some good young talent on board for not too much.

Rahul Tewatia - sold to Gujarat for Rs 9 crore

Shivam Mavi - sold to KKR for Rs 7.25 crore

Sarfaraz Khan - sold to Delhi for Rs 20 lakhs

Quick buy for Delhi and could be a good one too.

Abhishek Sharma - sold to SRH for Rs 6.5 crore

Punjab and SRH got locked in here. Gujarat came in later. On his day, he can make vital contributions but he will need a team that can give him a decent run. Very economical with the ball usually and that makes him great value. The base price was Rs 20 lakhs.

Riyan Parag - sold to RR for Rs 3.8 crore

Royals and Delhi in a fight to secure the services of Parag for the future. CSK come in a little later. Then Gujarat come in too. But finally RR get him. They will hope he can build on the promise he has shown. Some consistency will go a long way.

We move on to the uncapped allrounders.

Amit Mishra - Unsold

The veteran leg-spinner goes unsold for now.

Yuzvendra Chahal - sold to MI for Rs 6.5 crore

MI started things off and Delhi were interested too. Just when it seemed like MI had sealed the deal, SRH their hat into the ring. An experienced leg-spinner who will get you wickets. Royals got interested too and they eventually sealed the deal in their favour. RR’s first spinner.

Rahul Chahar - sold to Punjab for Rs 5.25 crore

Rahul was MI’s go-to spinner over the last few seasons but Delhi were once again in the mix. Royals were there too. And then MI came into the picture pretty late at Rs 3.6 crore. Punjab engaged them for a bit and finally won out. Kumble should be able to get the best out of him. From the base price of Rs 75 lakhs, he went all the way to Rs 5.25 crore.

Adam Zampa - Unsold

A bit of a surprise this one. He has been a form player and has troubled even Indian batters.

Kuldeep Yadav - sold to Delhi for Rs 2 crore

It took a while for the bids to start flowing. Delhi started things off and Punjab showed their interest too. But eventually Delhi got their man.

Imran Tahir - Unsold

No opening bid of Rs 2 crore.

Adil Rashid, Mujeeb Zadran - Unsold

No bids for them both.

Mustafizur Rahman - sold to Delhi for Rs 2 crore

A good buy. If on his game, his slower balls with give Delhi a very good option of slower tracks.

Shardul Thakur - sold to Delhi for Rs 10.75 crore

Gujarat and Delhi were interested. Punjab were in there too. Allround skills in high demand it seems. Thakur’s recent form has shown that he can be a game-changer with both ball and bat. This round went on for a while. Delhi finally having their way and signing another good Indian player. Plenty of fun memes on the way too... the Lord has arrived and all that.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar - sold to SRH for Rs 4.2 crore

A clear sign of how Bhuvi’s stock has fallen. Injuries and lack of form coming into the picture here but he remains a bowler who can turn things around. SRH have managed to get him and they will hope he finds a way to get back to his best.

Mark Wood - sold for Lucknow for Rs 7.5 crores

The pacer brings extreme pace to the table and there are few bowlers like that doing the rounds. Lucknow looked set to pick him up but then MI jumped into the fray. Lucknow stayed firm though and they bought their first fast bowler.

Josh Hazlewood - sold to RCB at Rs 7.75 crore

Delhi and CSK in this early on. MI jump in too. He was brilliant for CSK and truly discovered the hard lengths in T20 cricket too. A steady performer who will give you consistency. But in the end, RCB win out.

Lockie Ferguson - sold to Titan for Rs 10 crore

The Kiwi fast bowler who can crank it up and be a proper wicket-taking option. Fast bowlers in high demand, especially those who can bowl well at the death too.

Prasidh Krishna - sold to Royals for Rs 10 crore

The fast bowler who seemed to come into his own in the series against the West Indies had a lot of interested parties. He is tall, bowls with good pace and gets movement too. Base price of Rs 1 crore but it escalated quickly. Lucknow were in this as were the Royals. Royals eventually got him for Rs 10 crore.

Umesh Yadav - Unsold

The fast bowler who has great numbers in India doesn’t attract an opening bid.

Deepak Chahar - sold to CSK at Rs 14 crore

Now, this could go a little crazy given how he has started showing off his batting talent too. And it did. An Indian bowler who is superb with the new ball and almost always gets some breakthroughs. CSK were in it, Rajasthan came in late too. CSK wanted him... just as MI wanted Ishan. Great value at this value?

T Natarajan - sold to SRH for Rs 4 crore

The yorker specialist is up on the auction block. Hopefully, all his fitness issues are behind him. SRH quickly brought him back into the mix. Very high accuracy for his yorkers even at the death.

The auction begins again after a short break.

Sanjay Bangar, head coach of RCB: “Very excited and very happy to have Harshal Patel back. He was fabulous for us last season.. maybe his price went a bit over but we wanted to see the strategies of the two new teams.”

Rajasthan Royals Shimron Hetmyer Batsman ₹8,50,00,000
Lucknow Super Giants Krunal Pandya All-Rounder ₹8,25,00,000

Nicholas Pooran - sold to SRH for Rs 10.75 crore

The explosive West Indies keeper-batter attracted good bids from SRH and CSK initially. KKR also came into the mix later. SRH eventually managed to win out but this is a bit of a punt. A great talent but he will have to truly find his form for SRH. Missing out on Bairstow probably made this a must-win bid for SRH.

Sam Billings - Unsold

Maybe not even slots open for keeper-batters now?

Wriddhiman Saha - Unsold

The veteran keeper goes unsold. Not even a single bid at this point and that is a bit of a surprise.

Dinesh Karthik - sold to RCB for Rs 5.5 core

A solid, proven performer and his experience should have many takers. RCB and CSK battling it out for his services. Eventually, RCB win out. It took a while.

Jonny Bairstow - sold to Punjab for Rs 6.75 crore

Started at a base price of Rs 1.50 crore. SRH and Punjab were in this. Great wicketkeeper-opening batter-middle order batter option. Can score quickly against spin too. Punjab win out in the end and get a very solid performer in the mix. The Punjab unit is already looking very good.

Ishan Kishan has become the second most expensive Indian player to sold in the IPL Auctions. Yuvraj Singh at Rs 16 Crore remains the most expensive. Kishan in at second (Rs 15.25 crore).

Ishan Kishan - sold to MI for Rs 15.25 crore

MI started things off and Punjab jumped right in. Both teams have money to play with and they are bidding for a quality young player who can change games with his batting. Gujarat came in later. But MI continued to stay in it even after Punjab dropped out of the bidding. Fierce battle. SRH came in latest. MI wanted him but the other teams did not make it easy. Manic battle!

Ishan Kishan is now up and this should be fun!

Ambati Rayudu - sold to CSK for Rs 6.75 crore

CSK are in this. They have raised the paddle. Delhi were in it initially and then SRH came in too. Not sure if Rayudu will play as keeper but he sure gives teams that option. His experience is great too and if kept engaged, he can deliver for his team. CSK and Dhoni know what they are getting with him.

Matthew Wade - Unsold.

Base price of Rs 2 crore. No interest at this point.

We will now move on to the wicketkeepers category and that means Ishan Kishan. Things could get a little crazy now.

Mohammad Nabi - Unsold

The Afghan veteran fails to attract any bids in this round. His base price was Rs 1 crore.

Mitchell Marsh - sold to Delhi for Rs 6.5 crore

The Australian allrounder seems to have finally put his injuries behind him. He has flourished at the No 3 slot in the batting order for his national team and can put in the hard yards as a bowler too. A proper pick on form. Delhi and SRH were in the running and it was Delhi who won out in the middle.

Krunal Pandya - sold to Lucknow for Rs 8.25 crore

The left-arm spinner has been a solid performer for MI in the past but his performances seemed to taper off. His batting hasn’t come along as many hoped. Still there is experience there and he can do the job for his team. SRH and Lucknow in the bidding battle initially. Then Gujarat coming in too... But it was Lucknow who won out in the end. But Hooda and Krunal in the same team. Can expect some fireworks in the nets too?

Washington Sundar - sold to SRH for Rs 8.75 crore

Gujarat and Delhi locked horns in a battle to get Washington. A spinner who can bowl at the start of the innings or the middle. Usually very economical and of late, has been working on his batting as well. Lucknow came into the mix at Rs 8 crore. Then, SRH waded into the bidding war too and they were the ones to win the battle.

Wanindu Hasaranga - sold to RCB at Rs 10.75 crore

No further bids for the spinner. RCB will surely hope to use him better this season. They hardly used him on turners last season.

Back to Wanindu Hasaranga

The bidding had to be paused at Rs 10.75 crore.

Almost time for the auction to restart. Will MI manage to get the players they need? They have been saving up for Ishan presumably but the Punjab Kings might have something to say about that as well.

Lucknow owner Sanjeev Goenka: We’ve got our top preferences as of now and it’s gone well so far. We’ve got a great opener in QDK, great all rounder in Holder. We have two quality Indian players. There is a balance beginning to emerge. So far on track.

Rajasthan Royals Shimron Hetmyer Batsman ₹8,50,00,000

Someone seems to have collapsed in the Auction Hall. We have a short break while the medics have a look.

Wanindu Hasaranga - auction paused.

A leg-spinner is always in demand and Hasaranga has been in fine form for Sri Lanka. A wicket-taker in the middle over is a key requirement for every team. He went up from the base price of Rs 1 crore all the way to Rs 10.75 crore before the auction was paused. SRH and Punjab battled it out early before RCB threw their hat in the ring.

Deepak Hooda - sold to Lucknow for Rs 5.75 crore

The batter who can also bowl made his debut for India recently and he had CSK and Lucknow interested. SRH also interested and jumping in a bit later. Solid buy for the conditions and is proving himself to be a bit of a finisher as well.

Vinayakk Mohanarangan: Have to be delighted for Harshal Patel. Just a case of sheer hard work and determination paying huge rewards. When he spoke during the IND-NZ series about fine-tuning whatever skillset he had, came across as a guy just trying to make the most of his talent.

Harshal Patel - sold to RCB for Rs 10.75 crore

32 wickets in IPL 2021 make him hot property this year’s auction. His slower balls at the death are brilliant and every team would like to have him in the mix. RCB and SRH battling it out. Started at the base price of Rs 2 crore and went all the way over Rs 10 crore. RCB will be happy to have him back.

Shakid Al Hasan - Unsold

A bit surprising given what he brings to the table but perhaps teams will go to him later.

Jason Holder - sold to Lucknow for Rs 8.75 crore

The West Indies allrounder can play multiple roles (bowl with the new ball, bowl at the death and can use the long handle well too) and he can do that with consistency. That makes him a wanted player and he attracted a round of fierce bidding. Lucknow and Royals battling it out. Lucknow won out in the end.

Nitish Rana - sold to KKR for Rs 8 crore

The left-hander put in some impressive performances for KKR and that meant they were interested again. An impressive increase from his base price of Rs 1 crore. He can bowl as well and that makes him a good buy.

Dwayne Bravo - sold to CSK for Rs 4.4 crore

The CSK veteran goes back to CSK. SRH were interested too. Then, Delhi came in. It only seems right. If fit, Bravo brings a lot to the table and Dhoni knows how to bring the most out of him.

We now move onto Set no 3 – the allrounders.

Steve Smith - unsold

One of the world’s best Test batters and he has no bid in the auction.

Suresh Raina - unsold

CSK not interested in Raina for now. No other team put up the paddle either.

Devdutt Padikkal - sold to Royals for Rs 7.75 crore

The young left-handed opener made a fine impression at the top of the order for RCB. Bit of a bidding war for a player who could potentially be the future of the franchise.

David Miller - Unsold

Teams may come back for the left-hander later. But for now, no bids.

Jason Roy - sold to Gujarat for Rs 2 crore

Not too many takers for the explosive batter but Gujarat get him. Could get great value if he gets enough game time.

Robin Uthappa - sold to CSK for Rs 2 crore

CSK get one of the old boys back. He made vital contributions towards the fag end of last season and Dhoni will hope for more of the same.

Shimron Hetmyer - sold to Rajasthan for Rs 8.5 crore

The left-hander has proved himself to be a very dangerous finisher in his time at Delhi. And finishers are always in high demand. Delhi wanted him and so did the Royals and they both seemed ready to go the extra mile for him. Royals got another experienced player into their squad.

Manish Pandey - sold to Lucknow for Rs 4.6 crore

Delhi, SRH and Lucknow were all in the mix for this experienced Indian talent. When he finds his groove he can be a key player for his team but his form has not been great. Lucknow will hope he can turn that around in the coming season.

Time for the second set now

Now, this is where the real auction begins. Expect teams to take some massive punts here.

Aditya Chaturvedi: David Warner, at Rs 6.25 crore, is an incredible buy for Delhi Capitals. You could see it on the owners’ face that they weren’t expecting to get him this cheap. He had a forgettable IPL 2021 but bounced back in style to help Australia win the T20 World Cup (he was the player of the tournament) and he definitely has plenty of quality cricket left in him. With Ricky Ponting there to guide him as coach, expect Warner to be back among the runs in the IPL.

David Warner - sold to Delhi for Rs 6.25 crore

Proven quality but issues with SRH towards the end of last season saw him fall out of favour. He found his form thereafter for Australia. CSK, MI and Delhi in the mix for him. A solid, very good value buy for Delhi. They can expect runs and with Ponting around, Warner should enjoy his time at the team too.

Quinton de Kock - sold to Lucknow for Rs 6.75 crore

The SA wicketkeeper-batter made a huge impact as opener for MI. CSK and Lucknow in the mix for the left-hander. MI coming in too. Then just as it looked like Lucknow had got in, Delhi jumped in. But Lucknow stayed firm and got a solid, solid opener.

Faf du Plessis - sold to RCB to Rs 7 crore

A CSK stalwart and a proven player with no international distractions. He gets the job done. RCB put their hand up for him and Delhi followed suit. RCB eventually get him.

Mohammed Shami - sold to Gujarat for Rs 6.25 crore

Shami was bought by PBKS for Rs 4.80 crore last time around and this time RCB and Lucknow battled it out initially. The pacer has raised his T20 stocks in recent times and his yorker has helped. A good buy for Gujarat. Gives them some solid quality in the pace department.

Shreyas Iyer - sold to KKR for Rs 12.25 crore

Fierce bidding for the young Indian star. Delhi in it early. Lucknow too. A captaincy candidate too and he gives good value in the middle-order. KKR coming into the mix later and then Gujarat jumped in too. Clearly a player in great demand. KKR finally with the winning bid. Will he captain them too?

Trent Boult - sold to Royals for Rs 8 crore

Brilliant with the new ball and getting better with the old ball. He was superb for Mumbai Indians. RCB and Royals going at it initially. Then, Mumbai jumped into the mix. Royals hung in for a while and eventually got him.

Kagiso Rabada - sold to Punjab for Rs 9.25 crore

For a short while, Rabada was exceptional for Delhi but then injury seemed to derail him a bit. Big battle between Delhi and Gujarat initially and then Punjab waded into the battle. Another big buy for PBKS who had retained just 2 players.

Pat Cummins - sold to Kolkata for Rs 7.25 crore

One of the best fast bowlers in the world and he was in demand. Opening bid was made by KKR, his old franchise. Gujarat are interested too. KKR had bought him to Rs 15.50 crore last time around but this time it doesn’t go as high. A good value buy again. Things haven’t gone very crazy yet.

R Ashwin - sold to Rajasthan for Rs 5 crore

It started off slowly. Royals and Delhi battling early on. Base price of Rs 2 crore and it went all the way to Rs 5 crore. A solid buy. A consistent performer.

Shikhar Dhawan - sold to Punjab for Rs 8.25 crore

Base price of Rs 2 crore. After a short pause things get going. Royals and Delhi in the hunt. It went to and fro a few times before Punjab jumped into the battle and it was the Punjab Kings who eventually got him for Rs 8.25. They do have the biggest purse and they have made a solid buy to start things off.

Alright, here we go

600 players will go under the hammer over the next two days.

And it is time

Time for the auction to begin. We will be jumping right in and the big players are first up.

Most expensive buys in IPL history

Chris Morris – INR 16.25 Crore (Rajasthan Royals)

Yuvraj Singh – INR 16 Crore (Delhi Daredevils)

Pat Cummins – INR 15.5 Crore (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Kyle Jamieson – INR 15 Crore (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Ben Stokes – INR 14.5 Crore (Rising Pune Supergiant)

How many players will go above the top mark today?

Ashish Magotra: The focus for most teams will be first playing a quality starting XI and that is where the teams that have made good retentions will have an advantage. They can be much more focussed on who they want and why. Get the starting XI fixed and then get a few back-ups. Everything else can wait.

Long term or worry about next season?

Lot of chatter about teams wanting to build a strong squad for the future but Sanjay Manjrekar, on Star Sports, believes that teams are going to be focussed on winning the next season. You don’t want to think too far ahead.

Captaincy picks

Some of the biggest bids are likely to be for players who will also captain their sides. David Warner, given his recent form and IPL history, will clearly come into that equation as will Shreyas Iyer. R Ashwin might be a different pick for some teams on the lookout for a captain. A wild pick could be Glenn Maxwell or even Eoin Morgan, whose batting seems to have fallen away but he has solid captaincy credentials.

High potential long-term picks

The kind of players you can build a team around. Who are these players? The Mega Auction is a chance to reset and set a base for the long-term.

Understanding the IPL Auction dynamics

How did Chris Morris fetch over 16 crores in the 2021 auction? How did Chris Lynn only go for base price in 2020? Why did Manish Pandey fetch more than, say, Kieron Pollard in the 2018 mega auction? Often, the blanket answer to these questions is just “auction dynamics”.

The mad world of IPL Auction dynamics and how it can affect player pricing

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the IPL Mega Auction ahead of the IPL 2022 season. It is a chance for a reset for some of the teams that have struggled to get going in the recent past but also a chance for the more consistent teams to make sure they retain the right mix. 10 uncapped players have been added to the list which makes it 600 players registered for the auction and Deepak Hooda, who made his India debut against West Indies in the ODI series, has reportedly upgraded his base price to 75 lakhs. It promises to be a pretty mad day.
