Asked to bat first, New Zealand finished with 172/5.

Scotland finish on 156/5. New Zealand win but Michael Leask’s late cameo – 42 off just 20 balls – means the margin is down to just 16 runs. That could help in the net run rate calculations, when they come in play.

Scotland 147/5 after 19 overs:
Michael Leask (35 off 16) keeping the fight alive with 13 runs off Tim Southee’s last over, including a Six off the last ball. 26 needed off the last over, Adam Milne to bowl it.

Scotland 134/5 after 18 overs:
6-4-4! A late flourish from Michael Leask, smashing Ish Sodhi for 17 runs in his final over. They still need 39 from 12 balls though.

The match is over, but the margin matter right, India fans?

Scotland 117/5 after 17 overs:
SIX! A cracking shot from Michael Leask off Trent Boult to make it 9 runs off the over. The fight is on, even if Scottish chances are not.

WICKET! Richie Berrington is out on 20 off 17. Scotland 108/5 after 16 overs:
Sodhi has picked up another as Berrington falls to the scoreboard pressure. A ball after surviving an LBW review, he comes down the ground to go big but ends up top edging the ball. Conway and Neeshan converge under it and the keeper takes it.

WICKET! Calum MacLeod is out on 12 off 15. Scotland 103/4 after 15 overs:
Bowled by Boult! MacLeod walks across and tries to play a version of the scoop but ends up missing a full ball completely and sees his stumps shattered. The asking rate touching 15 now.

Scotland 100/3 after 14 overs:
Mitchell Santner finishes what was a economical spell (4-0-23-0)... with 13 runs off the final over and Richie Berrington slapping a Six off the last ball. The 100 comes up for Scotland in the 14th over.

Scotland 87/3 after 13 overs:
A decent over for Scotland as Richie Berrington breaks the shackles with a boundary off Milne. But the asking rate is well over 12 now

Scotland 80/3 after 12 overs:
Mitchell Santner continues with his very good, frugal spell. Just 3 runs off it, with new batters on crease.

WICKET! Matthew Cross is out on 27 off 29. Scotland 76/3 after 11 overs:
BOWLED by a beauty from Southee! The ploy to bring pace back into the attack after drinks has worked for New Zealand, the set batter is out.

Scotland 76/2 after 10 overs:
At the halfway mark, Scotland are not placed badly, but have a mountain to climb for a win. They need 97 runs in 60 balls, with the required rate of over 9.

WICKET! George Munsey is out on 22 off 18. Scotland 55/2 after 8 overs:
Leg-break bowler Ish Sodhi, Player of the Match against India, comes in from the other end. Left-hander George Munsey is ready and carts him for two straight sixes, even picking the wrong un. But Sodhi has the last laugh as the Scotland opener is caught by Tim Southee at long on off a full toss.

Scotland 51/1 after 7 overs:
Time for spin as Mitchell Santner comes into the attack and gives away just 3 singles. The 50 comes up for Scotland in the seventh over.

Scotland 48/1 after 6 overs:
Look at that! Cross played out a maiden in Milne’s first over, in his second the Scottish keeper smacks five straight fours (dot on the sixth ball) to make it a 20-run over.
That’s how you make the last over of Powerplay count!

Scotland 25/1 after 4 overs:
Adam Milne comes into the attack and bowls a maiden over to Matthew Cross.

Scotland 25/1 after 3 overs: Shot! George Munsey steps out confidently and plays a stylish straight drive for four. The left-hander even held his pose for good measure. The new batter for Scotland is Matthew Cross.

Scotland 21/1 after 2.4 overs: OUT! Kyle Coetzer (17 off 11) hit four fours in his short stay at the crease, but he skies it this time and Trent Boult gets the wicket.

Scotland 17/0 after 2 overs: Four! Southee pitches it wide, Coetzer uses minimal footwork again and plays a confident on-the-rise drive past extra-cover for four. There is a hint of movement in the air for the pacers but the surface remains solid for batting.

Scotland 9/0 after 1 over: Two boundaries! The Scotland skipper is up and running. Boult bowls it slightly short and Coetzer punches it through cover for four. The last ball of the over is on the pads and the right-hander flicks it past mid-wicket for another four.

5.23 pm: The target for Scotland is 173. Trent Boult has the new ball for New Zealand. Here we go!

Some reactions to the first innings...

New Zealand finish on 172/5, an excellent recovery after three early wickets.
Martin Guptill the star, with 93 off 56, narrowly missing out a well-deserved ton the hot and humid conditions. Safyaan Sharif and Mark Watt were the standout performers with the ball, even as the other bowlers were hammered.

TWO WICKETS in the over! New Zealand 163/6 after 19 overs
Finally, the 100-run stand between Martin Guptill & Glenn Phillips is broken. Brad Wheal gets both batters caught in the deep in the 19th over.
Unfortunate for Guptill, who walks back on 93 off 56 but he was exhausted and struggling badly by the end.
Jimmy Nessham gets a boundary off the last ball to make sure the runs keep coming.

How good has Mark Watt been this World Cup? This good!

Mark Watt (Scotland)

Scotland vs Afghanistan 1/23
Scotland vs Oman 1/23
Scotland vs P.N.G. 1/23
Scotland vs Bangladesh 1/19
Scotland vs New Zealand  1/13

New Zealand 154/3 after 19 overs.
The 100-run partnership (103 off 71) comes up between Guptill & Phillips as Mark Watt finishes his spell with superb figures of 4-0-13-1.

New Zealand 150/3 after 18 overs.
Martin Guptill moves within touching distance of a century as he smacks his seventh SIX, batting on 92(53)! But the opener is struggling physically with the heat and it’s bad. This is New Zealand’s first day game and the humidity in Dubai is no joke.

New Zealand 137/3 after 16 overs.
Safyaan Sharif is back into the attack and Martin Guptill is determined to ruin his fine figures which read 2-0-2-2 after his first spell. TWO RUTHLESS SIXES from the opener as he makes it 17 runs off the over and moves to 83 off 49.

New Zealand 120/3 after 15 overs.
The last 5 overs have been excellent for NZ with Guptill & Phillips hammering 50 runs and taking their stand to 68 off 53. Mark Watt bowled his third straight frugal over but that’s not quite enough with the way the Kiwi opener is going at the boundary ropes. Four sixes for Guptill already, with six fours.

New Zealand 106/3 after 13 overs.
This was an eventful over!

FIFTY (59 off 38) for Martin Guptill.
FIFTY-RUN partnership (51 off 39) between Guptill and Glenn Phillips.
HUNDRED comes up for New Zealand.
BONUS: An extra life for Phillips as he’s dropped by Leask at the boundary line.

New Zealand 92/3 after 12 overs.
Alasdair Evans and pace is back into the attack and this time, Guptill smacks a six to make it 10 in the over. The runs are coming in for New Zealand comfortably, despite that early surge from Scotland.

New Zealand 82/3 after 11 overs.
Michael Leask comes into the attack and Glenn Phillips uses the spin to clobber a massive six, the down-on-one-knee, into-the-second-tier kind! The ball needs to be replaced after that. 12 runs off the over.

Interesting chatter caught on the stump mic. Scotland keeper Matthew Cross to Chris Greaves – “Come on Greavo, whole of India behind you Greavo”

New Zealand 70/3 after 10 overs.
At the halfway mark, both teams are well placed. The Kiwis have Guptill going strong on 39 off 30 but Scotland have done brilliantly to dismiss the rest of their top order cheaply. NZ bat deep and are still the favourites, but this is T20 cricket and anything can happen right?

This is some stat!

New Zealand 58/3 after 8 overs.
Spin from both ends now as Chris Greaves comes in and gives away just 4 runs in the over.

WICKET! Devon Conway is out on 1 off 3. New Zealand 54/3 after 7 overs.
Spin comes into the attack and Mark Watt strikes on the very first ball! Conway is caught behind trying to reverse sweep. Matthew Cross is on the ball with the gloves as he effects his second dismissal from behind the stumps. Guptill going strong but this is some start for Scotland!

New Zealand 51/2 after 6 overs.
Guptill making sure the Powerplay overs are maximized and the damage of the last over neutralised with a terrific over. A slogged four and a casual chip-for-a-six makes it 16 runs off the Evans over. It also brings up 3000 T20I runs for Martin Guptill. It also brings up the 50 for the Blackcaps. That was a good Powerplay, despite the fall of two quick wickets.

WICKET! Kane Williamson is out on 0 off 4. New Zealand 36/2 after 5 overs.
What an over from Sharif! This is a BIG ONE for Scotland, the captain is walking back on a duck! Williamson has nicked one behind and he’s walking back. The umpire took his time but the batter knows it. Good catch from Matthew Cross. An even better wicket maiden from Safyaan Sharif.

WICKET! Daryl Mitchell is out on 13 off India
Sharif, the only bowler not to be hit for a boundary so far, back into the attack and strikes on the first ball! is raped on the pads, umpire raises the finger and New Zealand review at once. But it’s down to umpire call and Mitchell has to walk back.

New Zealand 35/0 after 4 overs
Brad Wheal is back into the attack from the other end and Mitchell gets his first boundary off the match.

New Zealand 23/0 after 3 overs
Alasdair Evans comes into the attack after the expensive first over from Wheal but Guptill doesn’t mind the difference, smacking him for back-to-back boundaries through point. Good final two balls for Scotland to make it 9 runs off the over.

New Zealand 14/0 after 2 overs
Safyaan Sharif to share the new ball, and he bowls a very good opening over with just one run off it. On the money.

New Zealand 13/0 after 1 over
Guptill begins with a cracking boundary off the the third ball and sets the tone for a big over. Not the best of lines from Wheal and five wides make it a big opening over for the Kiwis.

National anthems done, players have taken the knee and it’s time for play to begin.
Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell to open, Brad Wheal with the new ball. Here we go!
