Shaili Singh won silver medal in women’s long jump on the final day at the World U20 Athletics Championships in Nairobi to make it India’s most successful campaign in the event’s history.
Amit Khatri won the silver medal in the men’s race walk on Saturday. This was India’s second medal at the championships and the first time the country has had more than one medal at the prestigious U20 event.
Amit had become just the fifth individual Indian athlete to win a medal at the World U20 Athletics Championships. It was India’s first Worlds medal in a race walk event.
Then Shaili added the first long jump medal at the U20 event (and the second global long jump medal after mentor Anju Bobby George’s senior worlds medal) to take India’s tally in Nairobi to two silver and one bronze, and the overall tally to seven.
The previous silver medallist was Seema Antil (discus) in 2002. Neeraj Chopra and Hima Das have won gold, while Navjeet Kaur Dhillon and the mixed 4x400 relay team of Barath, Priya, Kapil and Summy have won bronze.
